Eric Roberts' Wife & Publicist See Things Differently

Eliza Roberts sat down with E! News and discussed why exactly Eric Roberts checked into Celebrity Rehab. She says that he got seriously dependent on prescription pot. Eric kicked drugs and alcohol in 1995, but she said that he has always had some anxiety. Probably not like Star 80 anxiety, but still, he had some so he tried pills but they didn't work so he got a prescription for pot.

"He uses marijuana as a medication. He has a prescription," Eliza explains. "However, a dependency is a dependency and he doesn't want to be dependent on it anymore."

She also says that Eric does talk to Julia.

As for the publicist, they make it sound like this is just something fun to do to make a couple of bucks and be on a reality show. "It is NOT for any serious drug/substance, or prescription drug abuse problem," reads the statement. "Eric wishes to express his genuine thanks for the concern for his well being, and appreciates the support of his family, friends and fans."

Umm, wouldn't you say that if you are dependent on a drug that it is serious? It does not matter if it is pot, purple drink, or Crystal Light ice tea, if you are dependent on something, I think that is serious. And look how they use all CAPS for the NOT. Why are they yelling? They should probably go smoke some pot.

  3. I didn't think they let you in rehab unless you know, you had an addiction to something. And I laugh at got a prescription for pot for anxiety. Where do I sign up?!

  4. Oh, Enty, why did you have to go and say "Star 80"? I seriously was damaged by that movie when it first came out. It was sick! Aargh.

  5. I'm glad he's going on Celebrity Rehab for an addiction to marijuana. There was another actress on in a previous season with that as her addiction.

It annoys me when people say you can't get addicted to pot. I call total bullshit on that. I've known many a fine person who could not function during their day without smoking up morning, noon and night. And well, to me that's a dependency that is ruling your life and most likely, burning out your mind.

  6. @Susan

I think it's more of a psychological addiction rather than physical.

  7. I think Mooshki hit the nail on the head yesterday about this trip to rehab being very well timed with his about-to-be-released movie.

  8. Second question - is "purple drank" supposed to refer to that prescription cough syrup the rappers like Lil Wayne (and a couple others I can't recall) were so into a couple of years back?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Probably, Sue Ellen. I've never been into it, so I have no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have no idea either, I was just taking an educated guess. Perhaps someone who knows can tell us.

  11. Still one of the handsomest men on the planet, and from what I have read, always kind to his fans and remains an acting talent. I saw an indie film he did a few years back called La Cucaracha and was blown away. I hope he gets what he needs out of this - from some of the people I have seen on this show before, he stands a chance of being a voice of reason. He did have very severe coke and alcohol issues back in the day.

  12. i don't know anyone addicted to pot and i know a lot of fucking potheads. when we run out,we don't go into the DT's and start robbing people to get a fix. most people i know who smoke just kinda feel bummed out and go on with their day if they run out.

i'd say anyone who's smoking morning, noon and night has a problem with Depression, not weed.

  13. Rocket- Purple Drank is the opposite of Red Bull, it slows your roll...making you very chilled out. I think it has melatonin in it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. If you smoke weed everyday doesn't that count as an addiction? I know some people that do....however I wouldn't consider pot a serious enough substance to go to rehab for....unless it was leading to other bad decisions.

  15. I'd like to know what he has the prescription for pot to treat. It's usually only prescribed for things like severe pain, nausea/vomiting and/or malnutrition secondary to cancer; glaucoma; anorexia/malnutrition secondary to other medical illness or medications; MS and other significant ailments. While I know pulmonologists will advise some, very severe asthmatics (as in needing to be treated with methotrexate in addition to systemic steroids) that occasional smoking of medical grade marijuana is indicated, I don't know any personally who've actually written a prescription for it. I would think if he would be public about using marijuana for medical reasons he would have mentioned having a significant qualifying medical ailment prior to mentioning the pot smoking.

  16. oh waitaminit, he got a prescription for anxiety? having done research on cannabinoids I have difficulty believing that's a clinically legit reason for a prescription. Of course this is hollywood, where docs will prescribe high doses of oxymorphone, with refills, when a celeb stubs his toe

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think its pschological, sure. But the addiction to pot can still be present.
Its not like all pot is pure stuff like back in the old hippie or peace pipe days. Nowadays at least some pot has some chemicals in it and saying marijuana is just pure plant grown from the earth good for you is a total lie.
I think pot can and does cause lasting effects if you smoke it over a long period of time.
I have known long time smokers to often experience memory loss and be just plain out of it and not as in touch with their emotions while on pot.
I think, like any substance, pot dulls what you are really feeling and helps you to escape, which can sometimes not be a bad thing, wink wink, but nontheless doesnt make it the be all and end all that potheads would make you believe it is.
I'm not an anti-pot person believe me, but having one parent that is a drinker and another that is a habitual 30+ yr pot smoker who cant remember half my childhood, I see no distinction between the two.

    ReplyDelete
  18. MCH, exactly. i've known people who smoked it everyday of their lives and were some of the most productive, talented people you ever met. and i've met other people who smoked a bit and then jumped to coke/shrooms/acid.

i personally have smoked on and off since i was 19 and never done any other drug in my life, whereas my brother was a heroin addict.

it's hard to say what is "normal" when you live in Vancouver..lol.

bottom line- anything that stops you from daily functions, socializing and getting to work is a bad thing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm going to have to agree with jax & Sue Ellen - Pot is not physically addictive like Heroin. You don't get sick when you quit, and you don't rob your parents for your next bowl..You just wait for your buddys to come smoke you up :P

I used to be a morning-noon-and-nighter, but now I'm only a nighter. I realized how dumb it was to want to smoke pot all day long. Now, a bowl after work and usually a hit right before bed does me just great!

  20. I'm on stress leave right now - wish my doc could prescribe me some pot. I get nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. and while my Dad doesnt suffer DT's when he is off pot he does have a very irrational temper or short fuse that has grown worse as he has gotten older.
I'm not saying every pot smoker is like that when not high but its something to note.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Funny, but back when I smoked pot it actually increased my anxiety - and made me paranoid!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've known, and still know, several people who smoke A LOT of weed...and they all say you can't get addicted to it.

However, they can't fall asleep at night without it. I'd call that an addiction.

I think there are far worse things to be addicted to, but every pothead I've ever known smoked or smokes on a daily basis and gets very agitated and tense when they run out and can't get ahold of their dealer or someone that can sell them just a joint because they CAN'T WAIT. They may not go rob a bank or suck dick for money to get their hands on some weed, but I've seen withdrawal syndromes in pot smokers. Of course, they said they were just stressed out and it was too hot in the room. Huh.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes. "Withdrawal syndromes". Ask Lindsay Lohan, she knows what it is.

Sorry, I haven't had any CAKE yet today.

  25. moonmaid, everyone is different...or could be some bad strains.

    Icecat- exactly.lol.

i'd still rather smoke weed than drink any day of the week. Booze makes me feel awful before and after the drunk.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I know people that smoke pot all the time and go to school and do really well, and have jobs, and relationships, and friends etc. I also know people who wouldn't smoke a joint if you paid them, but will bust rails on the back of a toilet on a Saturday night.

    ReplyDelete
  27. His indication that it's "only pot", yet he's going into rehab means he's either seriously screwed up from it & it's controling his life or he's after some publicity. Why not go to some anonymous clinic? Kudos to him though for acknowledging that pot is indeed an addictive drug. It's only those that are actively smoking that say it's *different* than booze, drugs, cigs.

I wish there was rehab for cigs & coffee. Brutal stuff to kick :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. sue ellen, for once we agree.

Harriet- i know some people like that...if they are like the ones i know, chances are they have had depression/anger issues all along and this is just a mask.

again, weed use is totally subjective.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @mygeorgie

My mommy doesn't smoke pot, is a nurse, and she doesn't think it's as bad as heroin or booze. She even signed a petition at her hospital to make it legal in ontario (or was it Canada?) Anyway. I see your point though.

    @jax

I agree with (and enjoy) your opinion more than you realize. We're both just HBIC's in life. It's o.k.

    ReplyDelete
  30. wow..well thank you, i think. ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  31. pot is ultimately a depressant, so not surprising the addiction usually goes hand-in-hand w/ depression...and yes, i said addiction. i've seen it. a lot.

also, am quite sick of celebrities (using the term loosely, it IS eric roberts we're talking about after all) getting a prescription for it...what bullshit. we all know damn well he just wants to get lit. now it's porb taken over his life, burned a whole hell of a lot of brain cells, and he prob truly wants help. boo hoo. while i hope he does truly get it, i call bullshit on the whole prescription-as-a-crutch thing.

  32. what Harriet Hellfire said

  33. I agree with Pookie.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great. I'm so glad he's going in claiming he's addicted to weed. Way to continue to give pot a bad name.

You CANNOT become physically addicted to weed. Yes, you can become psychologically addicted, but you can become psychologically addicted to anything: chocolate, washing your hands, etc.

No one has ever—in the history of everything—died from smoking pot. You'd have to smoke a pound a minute for 15 minutes to achieve a lethal dose. And that would never happen; you'd just fall asleep.

Whoops, sorry. My living-in-Vancouver sort of spills out sometimes.

Anyway, it was said previously but I'll re-state it: PUBLICITY PLOY.

  35. one more reason to love my dear Miranda. preach!

  36. Ha ha ha, I have too many opinions sometimes. And a multitude of marijuana facts at my fingertips :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. he's going to rehab for pot? HAHAHA.

but seriously, it is true - a dependency is a dependency. good luck man.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't really understand what makes a "psychological" addiction any less problematic than a "physical" one. A drug dependancy is a drug dependancy.

But can we all agree that if you have to put on Bob Marley every time you smoke a bowl, you are a giant douche who probably collects pipes and bongs and says things like "it's OK because it comes FROM NATURE".

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Harriet oh yes, I concur. There are lots of douchebags who smoke pot and think it's this whoa, like, totally transcendental experience, man, and like, my hands are huge, and listen to this gnarly reggae bass, and who haven't had a job in their lives. And stink like patchouli.

But then there are some of us who are ridiculously high functioning and like a little ganja to keep us level :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Miranda

When people talk like that I either assume that they just got paranoid and are covering with a lame story, or they accidentally smoked something other than pot. Perhaps peyote. I would say mushrooms, but I don't think you can smoke those. I don't know if you'd want to.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Why didn't they just yell, "Eric is a FAMEWHORE and will get his fix any way that he can."

  42. My youngest son grows pot professionally for a huge dispensary in Denver. As a former hippy, I was dubious about it's applications. However, when my daughter who has chronic crohns came to visit, she was dry heaving 24 7. Her brother brought her a tincture of thc and glycerin. He put it under her tongue and in 15 seconds she was fine. Astounding. She works for a big insurance company and is the first employee who did not pass her drug test and still got a job. (She has a medical license.)

I wonder which state will legalize it and tax it?

    ReplyDelete
  43. THC is not an addictive chemical. Scientifically proven. Google it, and go to any relatively recent cancer journal.

You'd have to smoke an ounce of weed in about 20 minutes to OD. Scientifically proven (monkey experiments, don't ask).

The most violent thing a pot smoker is going to do is rip open a bag of chips.

Psychologically addictive? Everything that makes you feel good has that potential.

Why is it that potheads always smell like patchouli?

That smell to me is vile. It was even when I was pretending to be a deadhead/grunger in college. HA.

Can someone explain this to me?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Marijuana may not be as addictive, but it can cause changes in brain function. Friends of my parents had a son who smoked pot, and after only a short period of time became schizophrenic, and was diagnosed as having done so due to the chemical changes brought about in his brain function due to the pot smoking. He then went on to commit suicide and his parents are raising his child.

There are exceptions to everything. I'm fat but go to the gym 5 times a week, am extremely healthy and fit. But I know that a lot of fat people aren't exercising and are burdens on society with their health issues, as are the smokers who are more affected by their habit etc. We can't throw everyone into one little box, it doesn't work like that. Whatever is going on, I wish everyone in the Celebrity Rehab house the best.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Moonmaid said smoking pot increased her anxiety and made her more paranoid. Bob Marley said in a situation like that, smoking pot doesn't make you paranoid, it reveals your innate paranoia to yourself. To me, it seems to focus more sharply whatever emotional state I happen to be in when I use it. I've smoked it and laughed my head off, then other times smoked it and almost had a panic attack, depending on where I was emotionally at the time. And maybe that's just the effect it has on me. I know people who are allergic to alcohol and cannot drink it, as well as others who are allergic to sobriety and cannot not drink it. As far as Miranda's "high functioning" comment, FWIW, Carl Sagan was a diehard pot smoker and used to get edgy when he ran out, I'm told...
