On Sunday night in Islip, New York, a 13 year old girl was in the backseat of a car with her younger brother and her mother driving. At some point she called 911 to report that her mom was drunk and driving on the highway. In the background, police could hear the mom yelling and the daughter says she was being hit by her mom. The call was disconnected. At some point the girl called again and there was more yelling and more screaming. This happened a few times until police were able to pinpoint the cell phone signal.
They pulled over the mom who tested at .18 which is well over twice the legal limit. The mom was charged with a felony for drinking and driving with her kids in the backseat. I have not heard the 911 call yet, but I admire this girl for doing what is right and maybe even saving all three of them from getting hurt or killed as well as other drivers on the road.
Amazing young woman, and despicable parent.

ReplyDelete"Leandra's Law" is what makes it a felony to drive drunk with children here in NY. Hopefully it will become a federal law in the near future. It's like a form of child abuse IMHO.

Wish I could have done that. Sue Ellen, it doesn't have to happen every day - trust me, but I do agree she is probably a crap mom. Chances are the daughter begged her to stop before she decided to call 911.
ReplyDeleteShe is a very brave teenager. I hope that the kids don't suffer further abuse from the mom or unfortunately a foster home if they're taken from their home.

ReplyDeleteGood idea, sunnyside, I wish that law existed where I live! We have no nighttime public transit and way too few taxis on the streets so there is A LOT of drunk driving around here. Scary.

ReplyDeleteHave y'all followed the Barefoot Bandit case? I wasn't really, but I read a short article when they arrested the kid in the Bahamas. Turns out he had a crap childhood with a textbook trashy mother. Social Services got to know them very well. One caseworker's report stated, very matter of factly, that he "wants mom to quit smoking and drinking, get a job and buy food. Mom refuses."
Why is it that assholes like these women never give their kids up for adoption?

ReplyDeleteAs someone who lives in NY and has a best friend who drives 1-84 every day, (the incident took place on 84) and a BIL who handled the deadly crash on the Taconic that killed mother, child and cousins and father and son, it sickens me that this "mother" would do this. Thankfully her daughter thinks for herself and knows right from wrong. I really hope this "mother" never has contact with her children again.

ReplyDeleteIf my mom had been stopped, she might have received help and maybe lived longer than 54 years. Really, it's the best thing for the mother as well as her kids.
