Your Turn

Well, I know that I have now spent about three hours of my day watching soccer and will be watching it constantly for the next three weeks. I even added a widget to the upper right to keep track of the World Cup. So, for today I would like to know if you are going to watch it and who you want to win.

If you don't care at all about soccer then how about your favorite wedding story. It can be good, bad, or ugly, just your favorite story.

  1. I love soccer and will be watching. I really don't care who wins. I just want to see all the fine men!

i grew up watching soccer and the world cup. i don't care who wins either as long as it isn't germany, brazil, italy, or argentina. each team has multiple trophies and it's someone else's turn.

funny wedding story: when the caked got wheeled out, one of my drunk uncles yelled, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!"

  4. I'll watch when I can and of course I want USA to win. Probably won't though. I don't want England to win. They're soccer snobs.
My best wedding story: my husband and I were going to his cousin's wedding reception (we never do the actual wedding, I don't like church). We were late, of course, (about 15 min.) The venue held several wedding receptions at once. It was pretty fancy, though. We walked into the building, saw a wedding reception and walked in. We went to the open bar and got a drink. We looked around and didn't recognzie many people but we figured it was the brides family. After that, the best man was giving the bride and groom a toast. He said their names and we didn't know who in the hell they were. Only then did we realize we were at the wrong reception. So we ran out (with our drinks) figured out where we should go, got on the elevator and went to the right place. At least we got a free drink out of it.

  5. John Fogerty was a guest at a wedding I worked. He sang a few songs with the band they hired.

  6. I was at my cousin's wedding, very fancy, lots of bridesmaids, etc. On the invitation, no children was specified in large black engraving at the bottom of the invitation. Someone on the grooms side thought it would be okay to bring their baby(under 6 months old) to the church. They baby started screaming about 5 minutes into the ceremony! My cousin actually leaned in and told the priest to wait a minute before going on and turned and walked back down the aisle(hugh church) and went right up to the couple with the baby and told them to leave immediately! they walked out quickly, my cousin went back up the aisle and told to priest to continue!! I have never seen anything like that before or since!! It made for alot of talk at the reception! LOL

  7. Watching my second game of the day right now. Don't really care who wins as long as USA beats England, hehe.

  8. We are big soccer fans. My husband is Dutch (via Curacao) and my 18-month old is a dual-citizen. We are rooting for the Netherlands and the USA (of course) and anyone who beats France. Sort of kidding about France, but Ireland deserves to be in this Cup.

But we will watch every single game (am watching now at work on ESPN3.com). LOVE SOCCER!!

  9. Proud Canadian, from Brit family, I'm pulling for England (We're all Scots. This is a difficult one in my household, half for England, half for anyone else, LOL) and Holland, where my soldier friends and family have tight relations with some awesome people dating from the Liberation. I have my Netherlands kit to wear on their opener.
The South Africa/Mexico game was really enjoyable, although the hosts were on the defense so much, it wasn't boring, I thought Mexico was fading and SA might pull off the win, but the draw was well earned (God, this is like a sports report, sorry, all!).

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh - and that's my son in his Netherlands kit on my profile... :)

  11. KLM he looks fantastic, and much better than I do!

  12. i don't give a eff about football, but i'll pull for England.

as for the wedding,i had the pleasure of watching my cousin and his new mother in law have a serious food fight with the wedding cake...and not isn't this kinda funny food fight. brutal.

    ReplyDelete
  13. LOL Mari - thanks!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Don't watch soccer.. BUT I'm rooting for Mexico. I work with a lot of people from Mexico so I'm obligated to support :P

Nope. No funny wedding stories.. Well none that I can think of. Mormon weddings are SO boring.

    ReplyDelete
  15. My husband is Mexican and was watching them *VERY LOUDLY* this morning. I guess I'll root for them, but I just like looking at the cute guys from any team :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. not a soccer fan...but watched the opener sa/mex in spite...felt like it was important b/c of the underlying nuances of it all...loved that it was a tie...but would've been happy w/ either team wining...saw it as symbolic for sa, given its political climate, and for mexico, for the very same (esp. immigration hotbed topic of late)...loved the combo of tutu and shakira.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I saw the cake get knocked over. People caught the tiers as they tumbled over. Caterer was able to fix the frosting. Bride was cool about it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. LOL @ this post. :) This will be a fun one to read.

I'm not into soccer or any sports. I tolerate college football esp. IF my team is playing. I do really like to tailgate.

Hmm...I have LOTS of bad/ugly ones from my own wedding. I really enjoy telling people about how some guests I considered seasoned drinkers tried Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka for the first time and proceeded to get knee-walking drunk. There were some bad moments (a bathroom puker) but the funniest part was at the end of the reception when the leftover food was being taken out, my best friend's husband grabbed a handful of cake...which was the top layer the caterer had saved for us (I didn't plan on eating year old cake so I didn't care & thought it was hilarious). My best friend popped his hand like a child and proceeded to give him a verbal beat down in front of my sister and nephews who thought it was awesome. I have lots of REAL good ones re: my husbands family but I'll be nice & not share those.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Canadian so all I really know very well is hockey! Being a francophile though, I think I'll pull for France for the hell of it. 2nd Choice: the NZ All-Whites!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think the Dutch will go all the way, although really, it's anyone's tourney.

Tomorrow's U.S. - England match should be special. Hopefully I won't be so drunk at the end that I have to ask, "Who won?" Yes, that's happened to me more times at sporting events than I care to admit ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not a big sports fan, but if I have to watch anything, I'll watch soccer. And if Sweden ain't playing, I'm rooting for Argentina or Italy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love sports, so I'll probably watch.

I went to a wedding once where little kids danced around the church; down the aisles and up to the pulpit. The entire congregation had a "WTF" expression on their faces.

Needless to say that marriage didn't last. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, and let me tell you 'bout my wedding dress:

I wore jeans and my husband's Motorhead t-shirt. You couldn't pay me to wear a fluffy white dress and have a "romantic" wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i am SO SAD. i had tix to the world cup, but ended up not being about to go - so i had to sell them. i would be there today. i'm not even a huge soccer fan, but i think the world cup games are amazing. i like any kind of sporting events that brings the entire world together.

so, as i bemoan my presence here and not there, i'll still be cheering GO USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. DON'T REALLY CARE....BUT HERE IN NEW YORK ALL THE BARS HAVE THEIR DOORS OPEN AND YOU CAN SEE AND HEAR THE GAMES FROM THE STREET....

    ReplyDelete
  26. U.S.A.!!!!! Or England. Either/or. I like both.

The night before my wedding, at the rehersal dinner, my father-in-law got into a fist fight with my husband to be. He accidentally elbowed his wife in the face and knocked her over.

He said at the time he wasn't sorry. Because even though Jesus says to turn the other cheek, even sometimes Jesus would have to say enough is enough and fight back.

It should've been a sign. Geez.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I work with a lot of Europeans so they are all going nuts right now over the games and making pools for winners.

I'm going to watch it this weekend they got me all excited for it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ok soccer (or as the rest of the world calls it Football) is really the only sport i can tolerate for long periods i have even been to some international games... so im rooting brazil or england...mostly because i think they have good teams and are die hard footballers
    -------------------------------------

And a horrible wedding story happened only two weeks ago .. two of the brides maid at my friends wedding fought and dresses were ripped ... plus they were fighting over the boquets ??????

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love these bad wedding stories!!

@califblondy - Was this done on purpose? Choreographed? or was it someone's horrible children?? Either way....WOW.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love it, Claire! Alas, I am pregnant for this World Cup, so if you need any recaps, I'm sure I'll be able to provide them. Sigh.

  31. Don't really care about soccer, so wedding story:

I was at a wedding for a childhood friend whose family is 'strict' Southern Baptist, and her mom was convinced that her sweet little angel was still a virgin. By the end of the reception, when it was almost time for my friend and her new husband to leave, her mom was loaded up on booze and pills. My friend and her new hubbie were saying their goodbyes, so the DJ had stopped the music. The bride's mother chose that time to take the groom aside and say-in a very loud voice-"Be careful with her tonight, (groom's name), she's very small down there!"

My friend wanted to die, but the rest of us were in hysterics.

  32. My favorite was watching my grandmother get drunk on champagne at my aunt's wedding. It's funny to see an older person acting so silly!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I went to a World Cup game back in the mid 1990's when it was held at the Rose Bowl. The game was Sweden vs. Cameroon. Sweden won. I was an extra ticket tag along, I went to see what all the fuss was about. I enjoyed it, but I'm not a big sports fan overall.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Not so much into soccer, but I was very amused by all the shouts I heard from offices on my floor earlier today when the ball hit the goalpost.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was 15 when my father married my step-mother. Nothing happened at the wedding, but after the newly weds took off on their honeymoon the kids got into the liquor. I got totally black out wasted. I threw up on my new step-mom's couch and propositioned by new 17 year old step-sister (at least that's what she told her mom, I have no memory). My father was not pleased.

  36. 2010 WC: Should be either Argentina (Lionel Messi · 10) or Portugal (Cristiano Ronaldo · 9). Spain who? (Couldn't careless that they are rank 2nd by FIFA's standards) Ps. For the 2014 WC, it's Brazil's for the taking. Mark my words.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm watching, I am pleased that SA got a draw today. I think I will look for Spain to win and I do hope that the US beats the UK just because that would be epic.

    Wedding story:

My sister's second wedding, she decides that her five year old son will be the ring bearer.

Before the ceremony the reverend says to my nephew, "You stand here (in the wings) and when I nod at you, you walk in and stand with your mom.". My nephew then quietly stands where he was told to stand.

The ceremony proceeds and its time for the rings. The reverend looks off to the side and nods. Silence. No child. The reverend nods again with greater emphasis. Still no child. Then a few seconds later a shrill five year old voice shouts out, "WHAT'S A NOD?".

    The entire church in hysterics.

Not a huge soccer fan but love to get the highlights while at the gym...

My wedding story... I was a date for a good friend who had been invited to a co-workers wedding. The couple getting married had 2 kids already and been together for 15 years. He is black and she is white. Her sister, the maid of honor proceeded to get so drunk that when it was her turn to speak she got up, grabbed the mike and said, "i just wanted to say hello to my new family" she put her hands up in the style of raise the roof and in a bad bluesy black mans voice said"what's up my COUSINS" it was horrendous. The grooms mother ran up, grabbed the mike, gave it to the dj and told the bride to get her sister out of there. you could hear a pin drop. we left at that point because we didn't really know anyone and how could the evening get any better?

  39. Oh I'm watching alright, and I'm so excited! I guess I want the US to win, if only so Americans might get more interested in soccer. If not them, then I would like to see an underdog team win; any underdog will do. Slovenia I'm looking at you.

    ReplyDelete
  40. First off, USA all the way!!! (Won't happen, but whatever).

Secondly, favorite wedding story? I went to my (now former) boss' wedding. It was not the first wedding for either. I kid you not .. on the way back down the aisle after the ceremony the bride's ex-boyfriend leaned over to her and whispered to her that he had made a mistake letting her go. They got back together at the reception. Of course, she didn't tell her new husband until they'd left for their Hawaiian honeymoon. By the time they returned, the newlyweds agreed that she would live with the ex-boyfriend on weekends and with her new husband during the week until she figured out what she wanted to do! Needless to say, they are no longer married (but he did remarry at least once more!)

My husband is Brazilian, so I have to root for Brazil. And I'm from the US, so I have to root for the US team, too. But my Dad lives in England (with my English step mother) so I have to root for England, as well. And my Mom is Irish, so...
Oh, I just want to see some good ass soccer!

  42. I actually have a funny World Cup story. I spent 6 weeks in France back in the summer of 2006, when the last World Cup was held, as part of a study-abroad experience. My friends and I were in Paris, on the Champs-Elysées, during one of France's important games. France won, and the street was immediately flooded with celebrating fans. My friend and I were standing on the side of the road watching all the excitement, when 2 guys on a vespa drove past. The guy riding on the back (not driving) reached out... and grabbed my boob (I'm rather large chested). It was totally inappropriate but so damn funny, so all I could do was laugh - I had just been drive-by groped by a Frenchman on a vespa lol.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I plan on keeping a close eye on USA, Mexico and England, but I plan on watching as many games as I can.

KLM - I hear ya. My daughter was born three weeks before the 2002 World Cup, so I was awake to watch all those live games, too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I live in Johannesburg and the atmosphere here is amazing. There is so much excitement about these games and noise and flag waving, and did I mention, so so much noise.
Wednesday, the whole office block dressed in yellow and trekked out to the main road to wave flags and blow vuvuselas. We were no where near where the national team would be but that didn't stop anyone at all. All the cars and taxis and trucks hooted and slowed and passengers honked their vuvuselas, waved their flags. We are talking a very busy 6 lane road, but it was just happy, smiling noisy chaos.

The general feeling is that Bafana Bafana haven't got a hope in hell, but what does it matter, we are happy, we love all the visitors and we are so proud to have the games here.

Hope you enjoy the games Enty : )

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's soccer madness here at the winery! The games are being broadcast over the speakers in the cellars and being televised in the break room. One of our guys started the day serving us all chorizo & eggs while we watched about 30 minutes of the game...not a bad way to start the day (or end the week!)With as much as we're all enjoying it together, the outcome isn't a bit deal for now. As the pool gets smaller, we may start to see team loyalty kick in.

    ReplyDelete
  46. No football for me...Canada's team sucks, and the French buggered Ireland out of a spot.

I'm cheering for ABF...anyone but France.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm in Brasil, so win 6 for Brasil.
Or else the ORANGE of Netherlands.

True wedding story involving someone who has been a regular on the morning news shows. At his wedding, this groom actually got into a drunken brawl with one of his groomsmen. Rock n' roll! Yeah!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. oh my god people, it's called football! Ok, I'm definitely watching it even though my country sucks at it and it's not playing this year (not since '94...lol)and we're not even close in getting a spot.

I'm going for two teams Germany, they got robbed 4 years ago, and Argentina. Ballack last chance to play this year is over and I'm hoping that Klose and schweinsteiger make more goals than before. I'm so happy for Steven Gerard at stepping up as England's football captain (he deserves it) and I can't wait to see Diego Milito ♥

This was a really good theme. I'm a big football fan.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My boyfriend at the time was standing up in his friend's wedding. He wasn't able to go to the tux fitting, so he sent his measurements.

Well, they got it wrong, cuz 1/2 hour before the wedding he puts on the pants...and they are SKIN tight, and like 3 inches too short!! :-D But what's he gonna do, wear jeans?

So he's standing up there in those skintight flooders, and I was laughing so hard in the pew I had to double over to keep from causing a scene. :-P

    Go Italy!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh, God bless you people for lovin' the soccer, but to me it's as boring as hell. I DO love some of them buff soccer players. yum. And sorry Jess - in the USA its soccer. Football's that other sport. Anywhere else in the world I'd be happy to call it football.

BlackCat14 - winery? Do tell. Napa Valley? I'll come cheer for any team if wine is involved.

Speaking of wine, my favorite wedding was an Irish wedding reception. It was all civil until they opened the bar. The mad rush was something to see! I didn't have to move. They left biiig bottles of wine at every table, and everyone at my table went for the bar, leaving me with my own open bar. Heh. After that, it was all a blur.

Then there was my cousin's wedding. I was pretty close to her at the time, but I wasn't in the wedding. Know why? She totally dumped me and her best friend for her hubby;'s family. She said that she could only have one more person in her bridal party, and since she couldn't pick between me and her best friend, neither of us would be in the wedding. Oy. I thanked God for saving me when I saw the bridesmaid's dresses. Baby blue polyester. At the reception her dad, who I could not stand, was groping all the bridesmaids. Ew. And I came back to my table to find some strange lady on my dad's lap. Little meek and mild me went ape-shit on her ass. My dad is a good-looking man, but there's no excuse for that kind of ratty behavior. He was trying to be nice. I helped him along. (sigh) Good times...

  52. I am SO excited to read Searching's comments! THAT is why this is so wonderful and I have been so excited!

I love it when any team has a joie de vivre like the Brasilenos used to have (when Ronaldino was on the team) but I want to see that other than from the South African team today and it literally makes me cry with joy to see a group of people be happy like that over such a silly thing.

This is so poignant to me that it started in Soweto today - I woke up so early in the morning to watch Mandela get released from jail those many years ago and I had deja vu happy thoughts watching the concert yesterday but was still horrified that such a beautiful concert last night led to such tragedy. I feel so sorry for the Mandela family - it is a tragic flaw that this happened.

So to me, the fact that the first goal scored for THIS world cup...was South African....I get choked up. I will root for any team who plays as a team and does so joyfully. I love that the Brasilians dance in the stands and used to dance on the pitch when they scored. I vote for the team who expresses that joy for this WC. If it is South Africa, Spain, Netherlands, Brasil, France, USA, or Cameroon/Cote d'Ivoire, I will celebrate them and be happy with such a winner. I am not personally a fan of pomposity so I am don't like C. Ronaldo or Rooney. I am crossing fingers that Drogba can play (what a good guy) and no further horrifying tragedies happen (terrorist BS) to spoil the fun.

    But, Viva Brasil y España!!!!

Besides, anything to keep me from weeping/obsessing about my precious ocean or other real world tragedies is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm an England fan all the way. Even though I doubt they'll make it very far :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. Searching and Chacha Latte, your posts made me get choked up. Watching the game this morning was beautiful, and I share your love of the joy of the game!!

During the last World Cup I was with some friends in Vietnam. The country is crazy for football, so needless to say the games were broadcast everywhere. The final was broadcast on the beach at a club in Nha Trang at like 2 AM... There were what seemed like a ton of French kids and maybe a handful of Italians. Being that my dad is Italian, I was routing for Italy, but it was so moving how all the fans banded together cheering and crying from so, so far away from home. Needless to say, Italy won and it was amazing, but what an experience... Love the unity and pride that the World Cup evokes.

  55. I was a guest at this wedding (friend of both the bride & groom), and damn, was it a hoot...

R2D2 as the Flower Droid was priceless, esp. when he ran into the stage at the end of the aisle & fell over), but the First Lightsaber Duel is truly one for the ages--they've made it onto at least one of those compilation wedding shows over the years. Oh, and that's the bride's father yelling "Use the Force, Laurie!" at about 1:03... ;-)

  57. I love football so this is a great time for me. However, as an Ireland fan, I heavily resent France's presence and will always back whoever they're up against.

Shan't be supporting England though, the media have put me right off that notion.

Do you know what? I've never been to a wedding and am now 27.

  58. Reminds me of a World Cup soccer commercial in an episode of the "The Simpsons" that goes: "Come see the battle to determine what the greatest nation on the planet is: Portugal or Mexico.(Sorry, a bunch of guys grunting up and down a field as big as Montana is a big yawn for me.)

  59. I just read my husband all the wedding stories, while we are road tripping. Thanks for the laughs. I think I enjoyed @April's the most.

Happy World Cup to everyone else! :)

  60. my friend's husband offered their house to host the wedding of his dominatrix sister to her transvestite fiancee(all boy parts plus breast implants). She was the groom, he was the bride, my friend's hub was the maid of honor. the "dress code theme" was medievel/renaissance, so everyone was dressed as a wench. one tall man, introduced himself as Molly, saying he was "6'6", 6'9" with heels!" :)

flash forward a few years, he (bride) did have gender reassignment surgery. together they met a man they brought into their relationship, he is unaware of the surgery. turns out the new guy is more partial to the newly female partner. the female by birth gets jealous and they divorce over the new guy, who still doesn't know about the surgery... but it was a fun party!
