Vanessa Carlton Comes Out
Vanessa Carlton decided to come out over the weekend. Not having a hit or any headlines in the past few years, but with a new album coming out son, Vanessa announced at the Nashville Pride event that she is a bisexual. "I've never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman."
I am always happy when someone decides to come out and lives their life honestly. Yes, Vanessa has always been a supporter of gay rights, but this seems kind of Anna Paquin-esque of her. I felt like Anna was honest and had nothing to gain by saying what she did, but with a new album coming out and Vanessa not being in the news awhile this seemed kind of opportunistic.
Maybe it is just the cynic in me. As I said, if it is truly her, then I am happy.
A woman is bisexual? Stop the fucking presses.
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree with your points Enty. While I'm all for celebs bringing to light issues that for some 'real people' can be painful or difficult and becoming role models, I wish Hollywood was less into the shock tactic way of grabbing attention. I'm so damn tired of Miley and her Lolita shit, Kneepads Kardashian saying/doing anything 'controversial' (her latest breast feeding comment) to grab some tabloid space, sex tapes galore and all the pop tarts and starlets being 'bad' to stay in the headlines. I don't know if I'm just getting old but I'm really starting to tire of the whole entertainment industry. A lot of the pizzazz and dazzle has gone from it and now it's just a machine churning out people willing to sell themselves for the cause. Or maybe it's just because I read the gossip sites :-)
ReplyDeleteHow nice. Who cares?
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was "who?" But I guess it helps if more people come out of closets. One question though - is it necessary to have had experiences being with a girl before you can claim bisexuality?
ReplyDeleteShe's bi, which means that she occasionally puts her mouth on some woman's lips and may actually let some chick eat her out. Big deal. It's not as if she is an actual lesbian, who has to deal with the long-term consequences of being out -- including job discrimination, trouble with relatives and the inability to marry the woman she loves.
ReplyDeleteColor me unconvinced of her gayness. Well, I am convinced she is gay -- for pay (and record sales).
^^^Being bisexual means that someone is attracted to both sexes. Oftentimes, with leanings to one side a little more. But not always.
ReplyDeleteJust like a hetero woman, who is a virgin, that is attracted to men, but has not had sex with one yet.
Oh and my comment is for linnea.
ReplyDeleteseems to me the only people coming out these days are women. why is that? is it because a lot of men are kind of titillated by bi women? is it the current 'thing to be?' or is it a safe thing for women to say when they need a little press?
ReplyDeleteif a man comes out and says he's bi, it doesn't seem to be so acceptable.
the whole thing's stupid because i think the vast majority of us don't give a shit what people do in bed.
When I saw her announcement I didn't know who she is. So I found her video on you tube and when I heard her song I was ohhh I hate that song hahaha. Why did she wait till now that her album is coming out to come out LOL.
ReplyDeleteWell, Nancer, it isn't acceptable because women don't accept it. If straight women started saying they liked seeing their man with another man between the sheets, men would be reluctant to claim bisexuality at first, but then they'd jump on it just because it would get them some women.
ReplyDeleteBut women aren't men. Men like more of everything. Women seem to want just one of the best thing. And they want men to be men. Gay sex isn't exactly masculine for a lot of women (even though a lot of gay men are in better shape than me). Also, the whole bi thing is also about the beauty thing. Many of the women I've ever dated or know personally think the bodies of women are more appealing to the eye than those of men (even if they aren't turned on by women in general). That may also be a factor.
Personally, I think 20 percent of the population is probably dynamic in their sexuality; they go through periods of wanting the opposite sex, then wanting a same sex partner. But I also think a lot of folks call themselves bi either to avoid having to deal with the consequences of coming out as gay or, as in the case of Lohan, just can't figure out that changing gender preferences will not solve their underlying problems in maintaining relationships.
Doesn't she date the guy from Third Eye Blind?
ReplyDeleteShe used to date him. Of course, maybe dating him turned her off on being with men full-time ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow convenient. Also, [yawn].
ReplyDeletei get it, mack. you just expanded on the point i was trying to make, apparently not very well.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if she was ever a blind item.
ReplyDeleteI love it when Enty calls us, "son." Happy belated Father's Day, dad!
ReplyDeletethe timing is suspect.
ReplyDeleteone hit wonder trying to come back...needing a hook that'll generate publicity...puhleeese.
oh please, who isn't a bisexual these days (or at least had a phaze in college)?
ReplyDeletei agree that the timing is terrile, and the whole thing is a ploy for record sales. what gets me is the stereotypes this behavior perpetuates about bisexuality. she's not doing any favors by using it to push records, she sets the movement back because others see it as "you can turn your homosexuality off like a light switch". i think most of us here know that's not the case.
honey it only works to trade on your sexuality if people care.
ReplyDeleteRemember the name of the country singer that came out as a lesbian a few weeks back? Exactly.
ReplyDeleteI love Vanessa Carlton and have followed her career since 2002.
ReplyDeleteShe honestly insn't a media whore and has said she regrets writing her biggest hit 1000 miles since it is all anybody associates with her.
Maybe she just felt bolstered by other people coming out. She didn't make a press release or do a morning show tour. She just said something honest on stage singing songs she loves. With like minded open people who happen to be gay or bisexual.
She even left her the last two major labels (her choice) becuase she was tired of them trying to turn her in to a pop star.
I don't think it was a grab at media attention. There are 100 better ways to do.
Whatever, Nancer. You're not exactly the height of eloquence. I stay above board. You should do so as well.
ReplyDeletestfu, bad fish!
ReplyDeletemack - i think nancer meant that you were more eloquent than she was in explaining that point. No need for you to get so angry.
ReplyDeleteway to be an asshole, mack. i was agreeing with you.
ReplyDelete"You're not exactly the height of eloquence" is totally my new go-to insult, especially when I'm insulting people who agree with me.
ReplyDeleteI can't find the report, but didn't they find a few years ago that a significant percentage of women who watch porn prefer gay porn?
ReplyDeleteMy apologies, Nancer. I misread your comment. Again, my apologies.
ReplyDelete's ok. i didn't express myself very well either time.
ReplyDeleteOf course she's bisexual. And so is Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Angelina Jolie, and anyone else who wanted to garner attention from being so "different."
