Britney Spears And Telephone

Gawker spends way too much time analyzing whether the track below is Britney Spears or just some person with an autotune and a lot of time on their hands. The story goes that Lady GaGa wrote the song for Britney who did record a demo (That is not disputed) before passing on it. The question is whether this is the demo. Her semi-official fan site says no. The interesting part of the article is their suggestion that Britney didn't record any of the album Blackout. Some person pretending to be Britney did. Interesting. To read Gawker's for and against reasoning, click here. Otherwise, listen and judge for yourself.

  1. Hmmm... This reminds of the long-running blind about a singer who doesn't really sing that would rock the music industry... How very peculiar.

  6. Okay - question (I am too lazy to go back and look). Didn't Enty say that he represented the actual singer (not the "singer" who is hugely famous)? He is always super-sensitive about this and promised that the only way he could reveal this blind is if somehow the truth came out or the famous person passed away. Would he really point out this little detail in the Gawker article if it were Britney? He can't reveal that blind to us - I'm not so sure he would offer up this clue so freely...

  7. Enty can't reveal who MV is due to confidentiality agreement however stating a comment doesn't void that.

  8. I'm not even a fan, and I don't think this is Brit Brit.

    Oh.. MV...

I think we are ALL going to have this thought. MAKES a lot of sense...Was Brit ever an "it aint"??

  9. It hacks my chaps that fake singers are more successful that real singers and sleazy sex shows passing as music videos are more important than real songs well performed. And it's so bad now that someone who can really sing, like Christina Aguilera, has to copy the sleazeball style of the no-talents in order to get noticed. Sick sick sick. And of course Britney can't sing. She's terrible, but I can't believe that there's an imposter doing her singing for her, because where could they find someone who was that bad?

    ReplyDelete
  10. looserdude, I somehow doubt that CA 'copies' a sleazeball style. She's pretty out there on her very own, with or without her talent. Though I'm of the school of thought that believes she has a spectacular vocal range, the freaky deaky side is ALL her!

  11. OK, I listened to "Telephone" and I agree that's not Britney, because I don't think Britney can sing even that well. If you noticed on Blackout, her songs are so heavily produced the vocals are distorted and patched together. The girl wants to retire because she knows she's done, but her father and the industry built up around her won't let her. She's like a captive of her own fame, a modern princess trapped by a reputation for a talent she no longer has.

  12. @Jewels - CA is freaky deaky? She seems pretty quiet to me in her personal life. So what am I missing here?

  13. When I first heard this song I did think of Britney.

But she used to be able to sing, she did have good pipes (check youtube for her older stuff pre disney.. no for real honest!)

But I would be quite curious to hear how she would have done this song.

  14. @looserdude - I'm not into this music style, but it seems to me when CA first came out she was a bit freaky deaky.. Xtina!!

BUT.. with that said, I totally agree with you, everyone thinks they have to have this stupid Lady CaCa style now.. Ugg. I just want her to go away!! But I have this feeling she's here to stay..

  16. Britney Spears is not MV. MV's second album did better than the first. MV Blind: "S agrees and records another CD worth of songs which is released several months later and does even better than the first CD."

Britney Spears' first album Baby One More Time "has sold more than 25 millon copies worldwide, becoming one of the most successful albums of all time and is Spears' most successful and best selling album to date." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...Baby_One_More_Time)
Baby One More Time(1999): 22 million world wide
Oops...I Did it Again (2000): 17 million world wide

  17. .....I don't think this is Britney's voice. It doesn't...I don't know.

It doesn't sound like her to me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Besides, didn't we say that Britney wasn't MV because it was fairly common knowledge that her voice was mixed with someone else's for a good chunk of her albums? Or am I misremembering that?

    ReplyDelete
  19. It kinda sounds likes Brit.

I 100 percent agree with Gawker that Telephone is the worst Lady Gaga song ever. I hate it, and the Beyonce portion of the song could be used to torture terror suspects.

  20. Was Madonna ever ruled out as MV?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Argh!! That MV blind drives me absolutely mental!!!!!! I so desperately want to know who it is.

  22. I just re-read some of the MV blind posts from Nov. 2009 when Enty listed daily clues. It seems J. Lo was the front-runner in guesses by the end of it all.

Maybe he'll revisit the blind soon. Crossing fingers.

And, July 4th reveals are just around the corner. Although, MV is too juicy to be revealed, I'm sure.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mmmm... no. Not Britney. Britney's voice range does not fit the range required for the song. When it gets to higher notes in the song, the singer demonstrates more of a "trained" method. Britney's training involves Marlboro and Jack Daniels. Her voice range is much lower.

    ReplyDelete
  24. This doesn't sound like a demo to me, but rather a fully produced track. So no, I don't think it is the actual demo.

I *do* think this is a hint about MV. Enty has said he was fuzzy about some facts in the MV blinds to protect MV's identity, so perhaps the second album > first album is one of the changed facts.

I love this story, because it points out how easy it is to fake Britney with a little bit of technology. Britney was never that talented as a singer, but as a dancer and entertainer she's one of the best. I could see someone giving her better vocals in the studio to make a star of her.

  25. Yeah its no secret that Brit's voice is mostly dubbed.

Interesting, I leaned more towards JLO for MV. It's no secret that Ashanti did most of the singing on her 1st cd, you can still hear the similarities in their current stuff. Plus, there was recently a studio session of Jlo singing(or attempting) released & she was AWFUL(& I didn't realize she had such a potty mouth)

This doesn't sound like Brit but truthfully they all suck, Gaga Brit Jlo...such a pity that these are the people that succeed when real singers can't turn a buck.

Hopefully you will revisit MV for us Enty...pleeeeeeez?

  26. At some point Paula Abdul was a popular guess for MV as well, particularly when she tried to have a 'comeback' with Dance Like There's No Tomorrow and Enty suddenly had an obsession with catching all her performances just to see if she would sing live in any of them. (She didn't.) Also, IIRC Enty specifically said he lied about the timeline for the MV blind to keep it as blind as possible, but that everything else was correct. That's why JLo ended up being such a popular guess, b/c Ent originally said 1999 I think, which immediately narrowed the pool down to only a few big stars.

I don't think Madonna was ever ruled out and that was always the guess I held myself. She's changed her look and sound so many times, if anyone could get away with a Milli Vanilli it's her.

I think the saddest part of all this is that there are so MANY possible guesses, and we're probably right on all of them. And these are people whose star power has nothing to do with their vocals! You have Ashanti singing for JLo (and how bad do you have to be when you need ASHANTI to sing for you?); Paula had a lawsuit against her concerning lip-synced vocals on her second album; and now Britney.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Britney definitely does some of the vocals for 'Blackout,' but it's also clear the core of the singing is done by other people. I think there's more than one extra singer involved, because some of the other voices sound quite different from song to song.

Enty did have a post that seemed to rule out Britney for MV, so my vote is still for J.Lo.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And no, that "demo" is definitely not her, Britney's voice has a more nasal quality to it. This sounds like someone who was bored and wanted to get an idea of what it would have sounded like if Britney had sung it. It does prove how easy it is to copy Britney's "sound" but in Brit's defense I have seen early performance vids from her career, and she is definitely singing live in some of those. She usually would sing her requisite ballads live, like here. But the over the top dance moves quickly became more important than her singing live (with reason, let's be real) and she either couldn't be bothered or taught to do both at the same time. So dancing it was.

  29. I think Enty has been intentionally dropping MV hints. I specifically remember the ones for Paula Abdul and J.Lo. In a Paula Abdul post, he actually mentioned Milli Vanilli. Then in a post about J. Lo lip syncing a song, he said it was no surprise because she couldn't sing. And now this!

I'm still torn on who MV is, but my guess is Enty is trying to confuse us or throw us off track by always pointing out when a female "singer" doesn't sing. You know, to keep it interesting

  30. @Mooshki: funny, that's how I feel about the Circus album more so than Blackout for some reason. Like you said, it almost felt like the voices were different from song to song. We're probably both right.

  31. Found this article:

Ashanti Addresses ‘Ghost-Singing’ For Jennifer Lopez
Ashanti chatted with Rolling Stone’s Matt Diehl about the rumor that she ghost-sung on Jennifer Lopez’s album. Ashanti said, “You are bad! You’re a bad guy!” When pressed for a real answer, she explained, “I demo-ed the vocals for her so she could hear it, not so they would be on the record. So I’ve actually been involved with four records in the Top Ten at the same time; everyone says three, but, technically, it’s four. At first, I was like, ‘Hold up, what’s going on?’ But it’s getting taken care of.”

  32. MV IS PAULA ABDUL. She even TOURED with Milli Vanilli. She won't GO NEAR a microphone. It shakes everything to the core because of her success and at that time judging others on the ability to sing when she couldn't do it herself. Paula was a LAKER GIRL dancer/choreographer. Never a singer. There is no doubt in my mind MV IS PAULA ABDUL. At least J.Lo's voice is similar when she talks in interviews and when she sings. Not so for Paula.

  33. Check out Paula Abdul on Wiki. I've pasted part of it, what further proof do we need??

In 1987, Abdul used her savings to make a singing demo. Although her voice was relatively untrained, her exceptional dancing proved marketable to the visually-oriented, MTV-driven, pop music industry. She was a tireless worker, and relied on input from her vocal coach and producers to improve her sound.[13]

In 1988, Abdul released her pop debut album, Forever Your Girl. The album took 62 weeks to hit #1 on the Billboard 200 album sales chart—the longest an album has been on the market before hitting #1—and spent 10 weeks there.

A remix album, Shut Up and Dance, was also released and reached #7 on Billboard's album chart, becoming one of the most successful remix albums to date.

In the early 1990s, Yvette Marine, backing vocalist on Forever Your Girl, claimed that she sang "co-lead vocals" on the album and sued Paula and Virgin Records for compensation. After one month of court proceedings, Abdul and Virgin won the case.[14]

  36. I think Sade is MV.

  37. My theory on this? It was a demo for Britney, but they had her backup singer do it- since it's not like Brit's capable of a strong vocal by herself. It's certainly the right style as Brit, but lacking that breathy quality that she actually has (since she can't really sing anymore). Since honestly, given that it was supposed to be Blackout, do you really think they would have been able to get Brit in to record a demo?

  38. Gayla, I think we're both right. :)

  41. ChasingHeaven, feeling deflated? I know what you mean! A while ago, I thought I found one singer that fit ALL the criteria and then some. Then, for kicks, I searched for her name on Enty's site and found that he spoke very highly of her and said that she's "one of the greatest people in the world." Totally not MV. UGH.
