Tiger Woods vs Mad Men

Today's video face off pits Tiger Woods and his new Nike commercial against much of the cast of Mad Men singing Bye Bye Birdie. And no, it is not a birdie as in golf, although since the other video is Tiger that kind of makes a nice fit. Not a nice fit is using Earl Woods as the voice in the Tiger Woods commercial. Well, I guess it takes a cheater to talk about another cheater.

  2. I think the ad is brilliant. Not that I'm condoning with father or son did, and not that I believe Tiger will change is stripes ;), but makes sense to take this head on and not ignore the obvious.

  3. @slider1964 - isn't all advertising manipulative?

  4. WOW! Thanks Earl and Tiger! I'm going to rush out and buy a pair of Nike's RIGHT NOW!

    Not.

Am I alone in disliking the trend of using dead people in product advertising? I must say I find it more than a little creepy.

  6. Thanks for the Mad Men vid. I can't stop laughing at John Slattery in the wig (and feel sad for the lack of Christina Hendricks!).

It just seems tacky to use the voice of a dead cheater to lecture a cheater and make us feel like it's okay to support him again. Makes sense for Tiger the brand, but it's still icky.

  7. Horrible Tiger commercial.

The Mad Men video seems very twee and self-indulgent.

  8. Without watching it, I think the Tiger ad is in poor taste, and the only reason Nike did it is to get the attention they are getting for free outside of the purchased ad time (no surprise, of course).

    LOVE Mad Men. Thanks, Ent.

BTW, anyone else unable to access the video volume controls when viewing videos on CDAN? I have to watch them on YouTube so I'll be able to control volume. The 'widescreeners' don't fit in the allotted frame-space here on CDAN. ???

  9. @Babs, I'm right with you. I don't think it's fair to use dead celebrities. They get no say in how their image is being used.

Pathetic attempt by Tiger and Nike to protect the brand and make money. All they care about is selling a bunch of junk.

  10. @slider1964 - I'm lame, I don't know what ROFL means, but I agree with you. He obviously learned of his cheating ways from his father and although the ad is good, it is hypocritical for one cheater to be lecturing another. But since most people don't have an awesome source like Enty, it will go totally over their heads - which is what Nike is banking on.

  11. ROFL is short for: Rolling on the floor laughing. Straining the fact that it is a lot more funny than your usual lol.

I just bitch smacked my friend!

  12. The Nike ad is tasteless and creepy in the extreme. Fail.

Love the Mad Men tape. For those who don't watch, the Bye Bye Birdie song was a plot point in an episode early last season. It's fun that they made this. Slattery effing rules.

  15. I completely ignored Tiger's ad - but you had me hooked with the "Bye Bye Birdie" video - only because back in my misspent youth, I starred in a synagogue production of the play with my youth group.
Incidentally, that was the last year they were allowed to produce anything secular - all productions from that point on had to have a religious theme.
And no, it wasn't my fault. LOL
