Your Turn

This week I was on my third pint of Ben & Jerry's for the night when my mom came down to the basement, saw the empty containers strewn about the floor and reminded me of the first time I got sick eating ice cream because I ate too much. I don't remember the getting sick part, but I do remember the ice cream. It happened when I was about 3 and is honestly my first memory that I can remember as a child. Today we have two parts.

#1 - Your first memory that you can recall of your childhood.

#2 - Favorite ice cream ( Mine can only be found at actual Ben & Jerry's stores but is Coconut Almond Chocolate Chunk)

  1. I remember being 3 and asking my dad how many more years until I was an adult. I did not like his answer.

Favorite ice cream - I can't decide! I like blueberry, heath bar and anything with white chocolate bits in it.

  2. My first memory is climbing up a set of yellow plastic stairs with Tigger painted on them to see into the nursery at the hospital when my little brother was born. My second memory is him vomiting into my hair and crying as my mom washed it 3 times. I came to love him though :)

Fav ice cream = watermelon sherbert from Friendlys. Wicked good.

  3. Throwing the crusts of a PB&J sandwich behind my brother's crib in New Orleans (to hide 'em).

Chocolate Mousse Royale @ Baskin Robbins.

  4. The first one I can remember is me sitting the middle of my babysitter's living room floor while attempting to mimic a lady breastfeeding a baby with the aid of my stuffed E.T. doll. I just yanked up my t-shirt and went with it.

I do remember eating an entire block of cheddar cheese one time, too, which I promptly vomited all over the lavender carpet in my mom's bathroom. Even then I didn't think orange and purple went together.

I like Ben & Jerry's Phish Food A LOT. Can't say much for the jam band though.

  5. #1 - instead of my first memory, I'll tell of a memory almost exactly like Enty's ice cream memory. When I was about 9, my mother made a HUGE batch of thumbprint cookies on a Saturday - thumbprint cookies are essentially sugar cookies with a thumbprint depression in the middle, filled with jam. I must have eaten 30 cookies on Saturday and another 30 on Sunday. On Monday, I brought a friend home from school to play games and took a plate of thumbprint cookies with us. I took one bite and threw up all over the game and my friend. I can barely look or think about thumbprint cookies or those commercial cookies with raspberry jam in the middle of them to this day. It was like 25 years ago.

#2 - Tin Roof Sundae or Green Tea ice cream

  6. My first memory was wanting to go with my mom to my grandmother's funeral -- I was very upset that I couldn't go. I was 3

Favorite ice cream is a tie, depending on the time of year -- Summer/Spring is B&R Daiquiri Ice - Fall/Winter is B&R Pralines and Cream

    Both are amazing

  7. #1 - i was a few months shy of 3 years old and was accidentally hit on the head with a blender...

    1. My cousin Linda, two years younger than me, was a newborn and brought to our house to show her off, and they let me hold her. Back then babies wore cloth diapers and that's it, so when she peed, it soaked through onto my clothes, and I hid behind the door because I was afraid everyone would think I'd done the peeing and I was just barely potty trained myself.

Another early memory, about the same time, was FDR dying. My grandparents had a picture of FDR on the wall in the house, and I can remember my grandmother standing at the ironing board crying, and she told me it was because the president was dead, and I remember looking at the picture of the man I knew was the president and not being sure what that all meant.

Favorite ice creams: both Ben & Jerry - "Creme Brulee" and "Pistachio Pistachio".

  10. First thing I remember is my third birthday (i think) My dad said "cut the cake mom" and I repeated him. This freaked out my family, because it apparently constituted my first complete sentence.

This confused me, because thought I'd been talking a lot when it happened.

  11. My first memory is reaching up to grab at a knife handle that was hanging over the edge of the kitchen table. My mom screamed and it scared the bejeezus out of me (and kept me from grabbing the knife).

Favorite ice cream is coconut with corn and peas that you get at some Thai food places. It sounds weird, but it works.

  12. First Memory: I was at my grandmother and great aunt's place (they were roommates even though they didn't get along) and I wondered what would happen if I put a stick into the spinning blades of the box fan, so I tried it. The answer was, big noise; it was quite traumatic. I was about 3.

Favorite Ice Cream: Chocolate with peanut butter.

  13. My first memory is of my mom bending over from behind me to button my jacket. I was watching her then lifted my head and hit my mom's nose and it bled all over. Years later my son did almost the exact same thing to me only he jumped up with all his might and hit my jaw. He broke six teeth and eventually I had to have all the teeth on my left side removed as well as a portion of the jaw bone that had got infected.

My favourite ice cream is ben & jerry's chocolate fudge brownie. Can't get it in Canada but now that we have a place in Arizona it is always in my freezer.

I remember being very small and my Dad brought home a big crate of bananas and we all snuck down the next morning (6 of us) and pigged out. We all got really sick and to this day I can only eat a banana every once in a blue moon. Blech

  14. First memory, my mom doting over me and enjoying it. She did that a lot but she also died too soon.

Favorite ice cream, Baskin & Robbins German Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Cheesecake, Baseball Nut, Coconut Almond, Pralines and Cream, I could go on but I won't.

If you sign up they'll give you a free ice cream cone on your birthday.

  15. First memory is when I was 3 and I was in the hospital with my grandparents as my mom was about to give birth to my brother. I was coloring in Mickey Mouse coloring books. I don't remember much else from that day.

Favorite ice cream: Peppermint stick or pistachio. Sounds great right now.

  16. I had picked some clover while waiting at a gas station. I threw the clover to a rather large german shepherd sitting in his dog house. The dog had had enough so he came after me. I turned to run but I got bitten on the ass. I always had a pixie cut, so I was on my mother's lap in the hospital waiting room when a mother tried to calm her son by pointing and saying, "See? That little boy isn't crying!" I remember saying, "I'm not a boy!" then I proceeded to cry.

My mother claims I was 2. I'm not so sure about that.

Even though I haven't had this in years - Baskin Robbins's peanut butter and chocolate ice cream.

  17. I was 3, the family was moving from Scotland to South Africa. Remember climbing down the aeroplane stairs at Nairobi during the refuel and feeling this unbelievable heat and looking at my brand new sneakers and feeling my feet burn on the tarmac.

    Ice cream.....toasted almond dribble.

  18. First memory: I was about 3, and my mom tried to get me to take ballet lessons. I was PAINFULLY shy, and remember clinging to her leg & bawling, begging her not to leave me (she didn't).

Favorite ice cream: Pretty much any flavor of Blue Bell ice cream

  19. When I was about three, I had a toy blender that ran on batteries. My grandparents were visiting from Pittsburgh. My grandfather was drinking his coffee. My blender was sitting NEXT to his coffee cup. I decided I wanted to make my own peanut butter. The peanuts went into the blender, the top did not. (Can you see where this is going?) Pushed the button and ta da! Pap had peanuts in his coffee (and in his hair, and on his clothes). He was NOT amused.

Baskin-Robbins chocolate and peanut butter. (Do you see a running theme here??)

  20. 1. It was my birthday, I was about 3, I was wearing a party dress and my mom was standing at the bottom of the staircase waiting for me to come down. I stepped off the first step and fell all the way down the stairs.

    2. Rolo.

    1. My first memory is of my mom's bedroom and my crib that was in the room, too. I can describe the room in great detail, but there are no pictures of it. All my memories are like pictures/snapshots until age 4, and then there are too many to pick.

2 Fav from the store: Kroger Private Selection Peanut Butter Passion: vanilla ice cream, peanut butter and Reese's peanut butter cups.

Fav "homemade" ice cream: Sweet Cream or Vanilla with Reese's peanut butter cups, TONS of caramel and crumbled graham crackers. DIVINE.

  22. I was about 3 and we were moving into a new house. I remember walking into the kitchen and then bending over to look at the kitchen upside down through my legs. No idea why that was important to me, but it was.

Favorite ice cream is either strawberry (with lots of strawberries in it) or chocolate ice cream with cut up bananas in it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Not sure which is first, but these were both from the summer before I turned 3, so I was still 2. I know this from records.

I remember playing in the basement of the apartment building my grandfather was building. We lived in the house next door and would eventually move into the building when it was completed. It was just basically a shell and my brother and I were running around what would become the basement. There were large piles of sod down there in rows for some reason and a huge pile of stones. We would jump from the first landing onto the stones because there were no stairs yet. We got in big trouble for that!

I also remember meeting my new friends that moved into the neighborhood when they came over and asked if they could play with me. I was playing with my Fred Flintstone bowling set. I let them play and we were friends after that.

    Oh...and ROCKY ROAD BABY!!!!

  24. earliest memory (confirmed by parents as true): standing in my crib crying and throwing a baby bottle of grape juice on the floor after my parents went out and left me with a sitter. i wasn't yet 2 years old.

favorite ice cream: ben and jerry's coffee heath bar crunch.

  25. My first memory was when I was 2 and I went to get my ears pierced. I distinctly remember holding my mum's hand and walking into the store. I was so excited. Then I was sitting on a stool and back then, I'm 40, they sprayed your earlobes to numb them and a needle was pushed through to make the holes. Then I had my first pair of earrings and I have had those same holes ever since (and no more).

Favourite ice cream; Baskin Robbin Choc Chip Cookie Dough. YUM!

  27. My dad took so many movies of us growing up that sometimes, I'm not sure if I have a memory, or I saw it in one of those home projector (silent) movies.

I also remember him betting us a dollar that we couldn't walk home barefooted in the snow on the Mississippi River levee in New Orleands. Yes...SNOW in NOLA!

  30. Earliest Memory - I was five years old and my mom took me, my brother and sister to meet my eventual step-dad. It's a great memory because my real dad left us right after I was born and 15 years later, my mom abandoned us to drugs. So, my step-dad was the best parent I ever had. He's a great guy!

Favorite Ice Cream - Homemade Vanilla. The original is always the best.

  31. my first memory... i wonder sometimes if it's real. i'm the only one who remembers it but i remember it pretty vividly. my brother and i were dropped off at a day care. i remember the parking lot. i remember being inside, in a separate room from him and crying my eyes out because i felt all alone.

favorite ice cream... thrifty's chocolate malted crunch. sadly, there is no thrifty's where i live now.

  32. jagerlilly, I also remember the awesome crunch of eating sand!

My first memory is being at our family's cabin outside Stockholm, being laid down on the floor on a red, puffy down coat and having one of the sleeves draped ove rme. My mom says that it is impossible for me to remember this, because I was only a baby, but I totally remember.
Another memory I have is from being a toddler, walking over the threshold to exit our apartment. I know I was little because the floor was so close. I'm looking down and I see the bottom of my little grey coat with black velvet buttons, and my awesome Doc Martens indian boots with tassles (it was the late 70's).

Ice Cream? Bitch, please. My favourite thing. Ever.

  33. My first memory was being potty trained

My favorite ice cream is Ben & Jerry's Wavy Gravy (they don't make it anymore, very sad), mint chocolate chip, and lemon sorbet

  34. My first memory was from when I was three. It was when my sister was born and I remember my dad taking me to the hospital and I met her for the first time. It's kind of hazy, more images of that time than memory, but that's my first one.

  37. My first memory - I was in my crib trying to figure out what was making the noise in my pink and blue rattle. I was about 12 months old. I know, it sounds crazy, but it's true. I eventually got that rattle apart. The sounds were made with sand.

Favorite ice cream...B&R Pumpkin Pie. Only available in the fall. Yum!

  38. Breast feeding...I'm not kidding, and I don't want to talk about it.

Favourite ice cream though is chocolate chip cookie dough! Although I love a lot of the combinations at Marble Slab

  41. My first memory is when I was 2 or 3. I was in a stroller and my older sisters and brother were racing towards some type of fountain. I was crying because I couldn't run with them.

I love most ice cream. We have custard in Wisconsin and it is divine. My favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip. My favorite custard is caramel cashew.

  42. I have only two childhood memories: I remember my mother feeding me in a high chair and I remember I used to read the Sunday comics when I was about 4. I was small enough to actually spread them out on the floor and crawl on them. And yes - I could read at four.

Favorite ice cream is hand-scooped Friendly's ice cream in Forbidden Chocolate. In fact - I am going to have some tonight..

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1st memory: I am sitting in my highchair about year old eating something and the roof began to leak on my head. (It had not leaked before) I was distressed at it leaking on my head but when it leaked into my food I had a hissy fit. My Mom coming back into room from kitchen and scolding me for wanting down because I didn't eat. She was upset until the leak hit her in the head when she unbuckled me. (AHH justice ;) )

Did someone say ice cream??? Anything. I love White chocolate cherry one and when I was a kid there was a place near me that did it's own grape. It was to die for!

Now, I really enjoy Dryers orange sherbert with vanilla. It's very refreshing.

  52. I would have been maybe (barely) 3--I was riding a merry-go-round, and apparently we (me, mom, and one of my grandmothers--I want to say my mom's mom & my cousin Brian was with her, but she didn't drive, and I don't remember my dad being there, so maybe it was his mother) had to leave. I cried my poor little eyes out because I didn't want to get off. :-( I remember other vague snippets, such as watching old '30s cartoons on our B&W TV--I think my mom told me later that there was a point in the early '60s where they were running lots of old movies, cartoons, etc. on TV, and in retrospect some of the cartoons were horrifyingly racist; I remember one w/a song about "goin' to heaven on a mule" (and if anyone can track this down for me, I'll be eternally grateful...). I was also reading when I was 3; I literally don't remember not being able to read.

Ice cream...hmmm...chocolate chip cookie dough (Breyers, not B&J's), various mocha/coffee flavors, and B&J's Dublin Mudslide! (I'm told I was allergic to chocolate when I was very young; perhaps a craving is just the flip side to an allergy?...)

    ReplyDelete
  53. A couple of early memories that stand out. A Commodores concert with my mom when I was about 4. Halloween, being dressed up as Aunt Jemima when I was 2, my mom put soot on my face. Dressed up as a scarecrow when I was 3. Mom used real hay and boy did that costume itch. Dressed up as Dolly Parton when I was 5. The boobs were true to life sized.

Favorite ice cream... Haagen Dazs Bailey's Irish Cream. Made into a shake with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Yummm.

    ReplyDelete
  54. #1 The aftermath of a huge storm when I was 1 1/2. A tree fell on a neighbor's car, and I couldn't go on the swings because there was a huge puddle under them.

    Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream.

  55. I remember my third birthday, my dad came home from work after the party, picked me up and we drove to Mike's General Store in Red Lake, Ontario. Dad said I could have anything in the store I wanted, on the top shelves was a doll dressed as a bride, she was beautiful. Fake pearl earrings, high-heel sandles, and the most amazing dress and veil. I wasn't allowed to play with her but I could hold her once in awhile. She stayed up on a shelf for years until my sister at age four wanted her and without question or asking me my parents gave her my doll. She ruined it of course..so my first memory is lead to my first bitter memory years later.

Ice-cream? Black Cherry, or real strawberry ice cream

  56. At the age of 3, I remember looking at houses with my parents when we were moving from FL to NC. I really wanted us to get the house with stairs because stairs were cool. We got a one-story. :( But it had a "forest" in the backyard (a huge clump of trees).

Favorite ice cream: Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake.

    ReplyDelete
  57. After we moved from New Mexico to Virginia, my parents had this house with a vegetable garden encased by pine trees, and I remember my sister taking me out there to eat radishes (I was 2½ so she would have been 4½). I remember sitting in the dirt eating the radishes she’d pulled from the ground and spit-shined for me. I remember the smell of the dirt, the way the sun felt on my skin, and that I didn’t care too much for the radishes because my sister did a poor job of getting all the dirt off.

Another one from that age-bracket (I’m having difficulty creating a concise timeline) was at my great-grandmother’s funeral. My uncle Jesse carried me up to the crypt to place flowers on her funeral urn (which had an engraving of a rose on it), and I wasn’t please because I didn’t really like my Nana--I thought she was quite scary and didn’t understand what we doing there.

Favorite ice cream: Homemade peppermint sorbet at this rib joint back home. They only give you a spoon full after your meal to cleanse your palate, and I’m always left hungering for more. Even though it’s technically sorbet, I say it counts.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My first memory is of Disneyland/world (whatever the one in FL is I can never remember) and being on the carousel with my dad. It was nighttime and all lit up. I was almost 3.

I am boring. I love vanilla ice cream best of all. Chapman's Vanilla Frozen Yogurt is pretty good too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk!!!

  60. My first vivid memory is at age 4 when I roller skated backwards for the first time.

And my favourite ice cream is either B&R mint chocolate chip, or Haagen Daz coffee. The best ice cream I've ever had, however, is from a place called "Cows" in P.E.I. Delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  61. My first memory was literally when I climbed out of my crib by myself. I have no idea how old I was, she said I started walking early, maybe 10 months. So maybe I was a year and a half/2. I just remember running into the living room and my mom being so surprised.

That is really hard, but I love choc peanut butter ice cream & also pistachio.
If we're talking B&J, then Chunky Munky.

    ReplyDelete
  62. My first memory was being able to run but not really well and I was chasing my much older brother and I remember he looked around at me and slowed down. My favorite ice cream is neapolitan because that is what my thrifty mother bought.

  63. This was a fun Your Turn!

I don't comment often but I really wanted to when I read this one.

My first memory is of me, my mom, my two brothers and a woman I want to say was my great grandmother. We were at the beach sitting on a blanket while my brothers ran around in the sand playing. I wanted to play too but my mom wouldn't let me. My mom said this never happened so I don't know why I remember it so clearly. I even remember wearing a little white sun hat!

So the next earliest memory that I've confirmed truly DID happen was being outside with my mom while she was busy painting a desk and chair. My brothers were at school. I was wearing a pink and white checkered dress with sandals and was about to stick my fingers in the paint when my mother told me, "No no, go play."

    ReplyDelete
  64. First memory: Trying to remove a brace that I was supposed to wear because my feet turned in. At night, in my crib, by light from the nightlight, and crying because I couldn't get it off.

Favorite ice cream: Talenti white chocolate raspberry gelato. There's red wine reduction and black pepper in it, and it is OMG good.
