Nia Vardalos Won't Exploit Her Child

Two years ago, Nia Vardalos and her husband Ian Gomez adopted a baby. Many people probably never knew they even did. Nia told UK OK Magazine that she has purposely kept the entire thing quiet because she wants her daughter to have a normal life. Although she didn't come out and say it, Nia implies in the interview that she thinks exploiting your kids for money in magazines is wrong. "We adopted a little girl and we've gone to great lengths not to release a photograph of her or her name. I certainly have my opinions when I see people with their children in magazines."

She says they have had lots of opportunities to talk up adoption, but all the magazines which wanted to do an adoption piece also wanted Nia and her husband to pose with their daughter. Although they want to bring more ficus to the world of adoption they also want to protect their child. No one even knows their daughter's name.

I think she has shown by this interview that you can highlight how great adoption is without pushing your kid in front of the camera to have your "hey, look me, we adopted a child moment. Oh, and where is our check."

  1. That makes me happy as I love both Nia and her husband, Ian.

Personally, I've always found that celebs who set up photoshoots with their kiddlywinks to be rather repugnant.

    Well, good for them!

I can recall a time when children of stars were hidden more than they are now. Then Britney came along....

  5. To be fair, I can't think of any paid photo spread that Brangelina has done for a cheque.
I remember the nursing photos of their twins that were taken by Brad, but not to the Kardashian level of photo selling.

  6. @Rocketqueen - Angelina was paid the most of any celeb for her baby pics (granted she donated the cash to charity)

I say kudos to them. An adopted child is already going to have a few issues adjusting to their new life. Why add even more potential drama to the mix?

  7. yeah, she managed to ruffle a few feathers there...

  8. Bu wasnt Nia also pretty good at keeping herself out of the spotlight? I think it would be impossible for a "bigger" celeb to get away with this

  9. Good for Nia!

I also commend Marie Osmond for adopting five children without me knowing about it. I just found out this weekend after the unfortunate suicide of her son that five of her eight children were adopted.

Kudos to the celebrity parents who keep their children and adoptions private.

i was able to keep my puppy adoption private as well...and probably for the same reason Nia was able to: no one really cares what either one of us do!

  11. So there are shreds of dignity and decency left in Hollywood.

  12. @Michael - which baby pics? I'm pretty sure it wasn't of the adopted children.

@ notonmydollar - one thing I have always loved about Marie Osmond was some years back she gave an interview to a magazine and said that some of her children were adopted, but she wasn't sure which ones. I thought that was very cool, and I still do.

  15. Nia is so beautiful. Like an old pin-up painting or something out of old Hollywood. Such a gorgeous smile!

Personally, I want to bring more spider plants, but that's just me.

    Just kidding Enty! ;o)

  19. @rocketqueen - sorry for any confusion, but I meant paid for pics of their bio kids. Can't remember if they were of Shiloh or the twins. I just remember that they were paid more than anyone else that year and they donated it all to charity. I can't really fault them on that though since the paparazzi would practically run them over with an SUV just to get the first pic.

  20. I remember reading that Nia and her husband actually adopted a three-year-old girl out of the foster system, not an infant... I thought that was just so cool :) And even more cool that she kept it so quiet - no publicity or anything. As the mother of a child who was adopted, nothing irritates me more than to see a story about some celeb and "their adopted child".... like it has to be pointed out EVERY SINGLE TIME that the child was adopted. Why? Why can they say the celeb and "their CHILD?" My daughter was adopted four years ago at birth - she is simply my daughter now, and her place in this world isn't defined by a legal process that took place four years ago. But for some reason the media delights in pointing it out EVERY TIME when children have been adopted.... like it's some big secret they get to reveal or something :::::eye roll::::

Sorry for the soapbox, but I think it's so crappy of the media to do that.... and kudo's to Marie Osmond for pointing that out to a few of them.

  21. @Michael - yes, I remember the twin photos where the $ went to charity. I just can't put them in the same category as the Kardashians or Kendra, etc.

  22. @Sporky That was fantastic.

  23. Enty, that is the second "ficus" typo in a week. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL US?!!!! I MUST KNOW THE ANSWER TO THE FICUS BLIND!!!

  24. Ficus? I'll see your spider plant and raise you a hibiscus tree.

  25. Actually, that sanctimonious bitch Angie did do paid photo shoots for her adopted ones. One for Pax right after he was "adopted" and more than a few for Zahara when she was an infant. Just because there is not news of a bidding war (like her ridiculous photo shoots with her "biological children"), doesn't mean she isn't paid significant amounts. She is and it is common knowledge. Now, maybe a little more common knowledge for some of us (my best friend works for her publicist- YES SHE HAS ONE. HIGH PROFILE. CAA). But Angie gets paid for all of the pics of "her" kids.

Ok, the quotes are because she hardly looks at or acknowledges those little kids if there is not a photo op present. Oh, and she has never been pregnant a day in her life. I know it sounds crazy, but trust. Twenty years from now, the stories will come OUT.

    ReplyDelete
  26. E -- what the heck are you talking about she has never been pregnant? I am by no means a Brangeloonie but she definitely appeared to be very pregnant twice.

You might also owe your best friend an apology if he/she gets fired because of you blabbing about their business.

I don't mean any disrespect but that seems to be a slippery slope there with your friend. Powerful people don't like their secrets getting out...

That would be totally insane if the kids aren't hers though! Haha...who is the real mom?

  27. Oh, and she has never been pregnant a day in her life. I know it sounds crazy, but trust. Twenty years from now, the stories will come OUT.

@E, I'm no big fan of the Brangelina juggernaut, but I recall seeing a pic of her at some red carpet event wearing a clinging gown over her big, fecund belly (can't recall if she was carrying Shiloh or the twins)and if she wasn't pregnant then that's the best damned prosthesis I have EVER seen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, be prepared to be surprised. And yes, she has access to AWESOME prosthetic devices. An

African woman was the surrogate for Shiloh. Strangely enough, her assistant Holly Goline, who everyone thought was the surrogate for the twins, was not. That time it was a French African woman (different lady). Shiloh was planned, planned, planned. Engineered, almost. The twins were not as carefully "acquired" hence their problems. And yes, they have problems. But expect Ange to become poster mother for "special needs children" some time in the very near future.

Oh, no need to worry about my best friend. Anything I post here is an open secret in L.A., there is not a lot of mystery surrounding most of these folks. Just have to be in, I guess, the right place at the right time to hear some of this crap. Your head would spin.

  29. I remember reading about her adopting and I also thought it was really, really cool. Good for them. I would one day like to do the same thing.

@E - oooweee! That is some good gossip!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Katie Holmes, please get in touch with Angie's people for your next prosthetic pregnancy, mmmkay?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, E, I am going to choose to believe you just because it's way too crazy to ignore. Thanks for the explanation and also, thank you for not yelling at me for my skepticism.

    ReplyDelete
  32. E, if your friend really worked for CAA she should have told you that they are not a pr firm, they are agents. See, to make the lie more believable you should have used the name of an actual PR firm rather than the most famous talent agency in the world. Secondly, if your friend really worked there she would have also informed you that AJ left CAA in 2006.
