Captain Phil Had A Stroke

The good news is that Captain Phil from Deadliest Catch is that he is apparently recovering from surgery over the weekend after he had suffered a stroke last week. If you don't watch Deadliest Catch then you probably have no idea who Captain Phil is. If you do watch the show then you are probably saying to yourself this was just a matter of time. As near as I can make out, Captain Phil chain smokes 24 hours a day, can explode like a bottle rocket in about an instant and works way too much. Without him this show would not be nearly as entertaining and I really do hope he gets better soon. His family released the following statement through Discovery Channel.

"[Sons] Josh and Jake Harris thank everyone for their heartfelt thought and prayers. The Deadliest Catch community has always been more like family than just fans.

  1. Thanks, Ent. Totally agree: it was just a matter of time. But I hope he makes a full recovery.

  2. I do hope he has a speedy recovery. The show could go on without him, but it just won't be the same.

  3. My Dad used to fish in Alaska when I was a kid. It is one dangerous life. The scariest stories are when people would fight and throw each other overboard.

  4. It was just a matter of time, but thankfully it happened when he was on shore and not out on the Bering Sea. I feel bad for the sons & the crew; they have had to get through a lot of his recent health issues in the past year (last season it was a massive blood clot), and I'm sure that takes its toll. The show could go on without him, but it would definitely be missing a big piece. I hope everything turns out ok for him, though I would say it may be time for him to step down and hand things over to his sons.

  6. He was seriously ill once before, when he suffered a blood clot or something like that and had to be airlifted to a hospital.

    Get well soon, Phil.

  8. Phil is also a very generous man. Last year, when the show was not filming, he toured the country doing fund raisers, in this area he spoke at a benefit for a church nursing home. He has rough edges but in person he has a pleasant nature.
I hope he heals quickly and finds the strength to take better care of himself.

  10. Capt Phil is the best as mad as he would get at his sons you know he would lay down his life for them. He loves being a fisherman and always to be under extreme amount of pressure. The smoking was clearly a factor.

    Hope he recovers quickly.

  13. One episode he was coughing up blood. Can't remember but maybe he had fallen and hurt a rib or something.

We've often watched if nothing else was on.

This pic looks somewhat like an older, bigger, rougher, less-handsome Sean Bean (yeah, I'm eat up with SB).

  15. I love Captain Phil! If he left the programme wouldn't be the same, but it's not a suprise since he smokes so much and works far, far too hard.

  20. I absolutely love this show! I've haven't missed a season - there is something just awesome about the realness of these guys - no fake reality here. They are just straight up crazy for doing this job - but I love it. Love Capt Phil, I pray he recovers soon and get healthy, the show will not be the same without him. Who will be Sig's partner in crime? I would miss all the ribbing and practical jokes they do with each other!

Phil WAS out in the Bering Sea. The crew found him unconscious in his cabin on the Cornelia Marie. He was originally sent b Helicopter to St. Paul Island, then sent by MediVac Helicopter to an Anchorage Hospital. His son Jake accompanied him while Josh stayed on the Cornelia Marie to await a replacement skipper. Josh eventually joined Jake in Anchorage. The Cornelia Marie is currently out on the Bering Sea fishing for Opilio Crab!
