Torchwood Coming To The US - A Good Version
You always worry about bringing shows over from the UK. You especially have to worry when the UK show is so damn good like Torchwood. I worried about The Office but my fears have been unfounded. Sure, the original is better but I almost think it is because they were first and they didn't do the show very long. After six years of 25+ episodes would the original have been as good? What will never be matched though is the UK's Office reunion special. Best idea ever for a show.
Anyway, this is about Torchwood which is one of my favorite BBC shows ever. When I first saw it was coming to the US, I thought it might suffer the same fate as Life On Mars which just didn't seem to catch on here. I also worried FOX might try and make it suitable for a Hills type crowd. No worries though. The original producers are going to be the producers for the US version and the creator of the original will be writing the scripts for the US version. Oh, and the absolute best part? If FOX orders a pilot of the show John Barrowman is going to star!!!
Love it love it love it! You guys are going to love it. We watched it on BBC Canada and could not get enough. Very good writing.
ReplyDeleteis that the girl from law & order criminal intent?
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT...WATCH IT ON BBC AMERICA...HOPE THEY DON'T CRAP IT UP...
ReplyDeleteI just read the synopsis. Queen Victoria and Aliens. I can hardly wait.
ReplyDeleteTorchwood is one of my faves and I love captain Jack, but we Americans deserve the real thing (Ianto, Owen, Tosh, Rhys=notice I left out Gwen). I watch it on BBC America....We can handle the accents, we don't need no stinking remake.
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDelete(still miffed that NBC screwed up Coupling so badly)
Awesome! A friend and I just watched the whole series with the help of Netflix. Great news.
ReplyDeleteLOVE Torchwood. Worth watching anytime it's on BBC. Does this mean the original version is now defunct or will there continue to be mini-series like Children of Earth?
ReplyDeleteAlso heard Primeval might be coming to the US. Love that one too.
I am still upset about Life on Mars~ABC never promoted it correctly and it was actually a pretty good show! I hope this one works out!
ReplyDeleteEnty you are SO right - that UK Office reunion special was AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Torchwood, but y'all have good taste so maybe I'll check it out!
Sigh. . .my cable company doesn't carry BBC. I miss it terribly.
ReplyDeleteABC sucks, Skeeball -- I hate them because they're letting Better Off Ted, the funniest show on television, die an unpromoted death.
ReplyDeleteDid you all read the linked article? I'm all 'bwhuh?' because of the whole "Tranter might try to reboot “Doctor Who” for U.S. audiences" thing... Did they not already try that in the 90s and it FAILED?
ReplyDeleteAnd while I love Torchwood, I'm not so sure that I want an american version of it. Can't they just do what they did with Merlin and show the british version??
LOVE Torchwood. HATE Fox. You just know they'll screw it up somehow.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I can't wait for more Captain Jack. I'd rather see him on BBC America, though. I guess I'll have to lift the "no Fox" ban for just this one show.
@ Kerry - Better off Ted got cancelled?? Oh no!
ReplyDeleteShould I rent the BBC version before I watch the US version?
My favorite BBC Office was when RG was a motivational speaker. Hysterical. I don't know if I've seen the reunion???
Fox will find a way to screw it up. It's a well known phenomenon called F&*k-Over-Whedonitis.
ReplyDeleteEnt seems to have had a change of heart because he originally "didn't get it"
ReplyDeleteGlad to see the change of heart.
What? They can't make an American Version, as Torchwood was created by the queen and is spin off of Doctor Who. I liked Torchwood the way it was.
ReplyDeleteBesides we already had an American version, it was called the X-Files.
'Better Off Ted' is the best sitcom since 'Arrested Development.'
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there are so many other Better Off Ted fans here. That is yet another show that should have a bigger following. If you haven't seen it, Hulu is your friend.
ReplyDeleteAs for Torchwood, I'll reserve judgement until I see an episode. The show rocks in the UK, but it would be hard to bring that same feeling to a network here.
I loveeeeee Torchwood and Capt. Jack is just great. I loved all the characters. The Children of Earth was soo good and sad. I am still wondering if BBC America is bringing back Torchwood.
ReplyDeleteLove the original Torchwood, and I've even grown to like Eve Myles. Awfully concered about the loss of Captain Jack's omnisexual love life (still hurting over the loss of Ianto)- will the PTB let that play here as it does on BBC?
ReplyDeletePlease please please God let the PTB at Fox keep their meddling fingers OUT of this show.
ReplyDeleteI loved it more than I love the new Dr Who reboot, and can only pray that it maintains something of the British sensibility regarding the plot, and they don't sanitize it for us idiot Americans.
As for Captain Jack, I think it's inevitable that his omnisexuality is going to be rewritten as strictly heterosexual, and I think Barrowman should raise all kinds of Hell if that happens.
Anything else isn't Captain Jack.
I've been hearing rumours that it will not be a direct remake but a version set in the US offices of Torchwood. Hmm....
ReplyDeleteDidn't know you were a Torchwood fan. I could've been sending you some convention photos and news.
ReplyDeleteJohn Barrowman!!!!!!!!! I will watch anything with that man since he starred in one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of the 21st century - hell, OF ALL TIME. Shark Attack 3: Magalodon.

CANNOT recommend this movie enough (for those of you who have seen it, YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT ;D )
What!?! How?! Why?!?!
ReplyDeleteTorchwood is part of the Doctor Who universe (which also includes The Sarah Jane Mysteries), with stories and characters running parallel to each other. It's not a stand alone show. That makes no sense AT ALL. It'd only work if it was set in an American branch like Ashlee said. Otherwise, WHAT'S THE CHUFFING POINT!!
Sorry to rant, I usually avoid judgment on US remakes until I see the final product. But that's just so wrong. It's insulting to the American public, it perpetuates the myth that all Americans are ignorant to non-US culture (and keeps the minority that are ignorant.. umm, ignorant). It's the reason why most non-US english speaking people get subtitled even though THEY ARE SPEAKING YOUR LANGUAGE! The TV honchos must think you're all stupid or something, that you can't cope with references to In-N-Out Burger and Barney the Dinosaur. You should be offended!
I found out yesterday that they're considering a US remake of Being Human (better than Torchwood, trust me!), which just made my blood boil. I can't believe they're trying to rob you guys of Aidan Turner. Look him up and you'll see what I mean!
Ok rant over, grrr.
Sorry that should be..
ReplyDelete"that you can't cope withOUT references to In-N-Out Burger"
My raging fingers couldn't keep out with my brain.
Haha, and that should be..
ReplyDelete"My raging fingers couldn't keep UP with my brain."
I might just chop them off now.
I just wanted to point out that Coupling kept the original writer/producer/creatortoo... and it didn't work so well over here :-(
ReplyDeleteBut all these comments about Torchwood have me intrigued - I will check out the original as soon as I can :)
I'd rather it stayed over here! I don't trust Fox not to screw it up like any other good show they get their hands on (and you can bet they'd clean up Captain Jack's sex life, too!)
ReplyDeleteAlso, RTD being involved does NOT fill me with confidence. Did anyone see the last two Doctor Who episodes? A bitterly disappointing farewell to Tennant, IMO.
Anyhow, I could have sworn Barrowman had confirmed that there would be a Torchwood season 4 on the BBC. Did I just dream it? ;-)
