Jessica Alba - True Or False

In an interview with Self Magazine this month Jessica Alba made the following statement. "I've bought 70 percent of my house off Craigslist! I've found so many things: couches, tables, lamps. I love the idea of recycling furniture and there being a history there." I love the idea too, but I also know that no one would want my ratty old furniture. Remember when my waterbed broke about 18 months ago? I put an ad on Craiglist and no one even called to buy it. I can't tell you how much used furniture I have tried to give away to no avail.

I have my doubts that Jessica has bought 70% of her furniture off Craigslist. I think what happened was that one of her assistants bought some concert tickets off Craigslist and Jessica pretended that was 70% of the furniture in her house. She also says she falls in love with Cash all over gain everytime she talks to him. So, that should show you the veracity of what she is saying. Can you imagine falling in love with him once let alone every time you talk to him?

  1. I get catalogs and fantasize of filling my apartment with stuff I know I never can afford. Maybe the rich and famous do the opposite -- fantasize about filling their mansions with stuff from Craig's List and Ikea.

  2. I'd never buy a couch off of Craigslist. I can't help but think of fleas or bedbugs.

That said, we've sold plenty of stuff on Craigslist without problem.

  3. A good thrift store shopper can find some really beautiful items in places like Craigslist. In fact, most of my things are hand-me-downs, castoffs or thrift-store finds. The trick is in being able to use those items in a way that looks expensive, and not cheap.

I can believe buying that much of your furniture on Craigslist, but I can't see her personally doing that.

  4. yeah she's full o' crap.

i use www.freecycle.org to get rid of stuff. it's super fast and easy AND people will even come get the stuff.

my bf once posted "bag of miscellaneous wires" and it was snatched up within a couple of hours, lol.

  5. I saw this post on another site, and a comment about it made me laugh all morning:

    Dear Jessica Alba,
You are delicious. Nom nom nom nom.

    Love,
    Bedbugs

  6. Ms Cool - I'm with you there. I would never buy furniture off Craigslist, esp here in NY. Are you kidding me? Bed bugs? No thank you.

  7. MS COOL.....
YOU SAID A MOUTHFUL....WE HAVE HAD THE WORST BEDBUG PROBLEM IN NEW YORK....IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT...AND THIS IN SOME OF THE BEST NEIGHBORS...ALSO THE HOTELS ARE HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS...
    NO WAY....YOU'D HAVE TO NUTS...

  8. She should drive around in my neighborhood. People leave their old furniture and mattresses out on the curb with a sign that says "free".

  9. I believe her - I just don't think her average is correct. Just because you have money doesn't mean you want to spend it. That's Cash's job.

Same here, looserdude, especially in the beach areas. You can just drive down the street and load things in your car. Surfers rent an apartment for the summer, buy furniture, and rather than bother with selling or moving it, they put it out at the curb.

I might buy tables and bookshelves and stuff off Craigslist (or at the thrift shop) but I think I'll buy just a little better quality with fewer inhabitants when it comes to beds and sofas.

  11. I believe her. The CL in Philly has some unbelievable items. I can only imagine that the LA area is even better.

Not all sellers are bedbug types. I've picked up some great items from Main Line homes.

  14. One of the shelter mags (can't remember which one, but I think it might have been Domino) did a photo layout of Jessica's house when she was pregnant, and she made the claim about wanting to be ecologically correct when furnishing her house, and buying used was her primary way of accomplishing that. I doubt she was the one scouring Craig's List, her decorator had that fun task, but a high percentage of her furnishings did come second hand. Things were certainly refinished and reupholstered, of course.

  15. Molly Ringwald is another Craig's List shopper; she is a fan of mid-century modern furniture and has gotten a lot of her household pieces secondhand. She says she has surprised a lot of sellers when she shows up at their house with a truck (Jessica certainly isn't schleping her own purchases home).

  16. I troll Craigslist like no other, and have never had a problem with any of my second hand furniture/bikes/apartments/miscellaneous grabs. I haven’t bought any upholstered furniture because my old roommate in Washington, DC did and ended up bringing bedbugs into our apartment. There’s nothing like going to sleep at night knowing an immigrant family of bedbugs will be feasting upon you for the night, week, month, half year...

I also have this weird thing where I don’t want to buy a couch or chair where the farts from people past have soaked into the fabric. Yes, I know it's asinine, but I can't help thinking it.

  17. Mattresses should be bought new, but, to me, anything else is fair game. We don't have too much of a problem with bedbugs around here, but I still like to reupholster everything. That's really more of a "making it mine" kind of thing.

  18. Treesap - "the farts from people past have soaked into the fabric".. LOL! Between that and the 'nom nom nom, bedbugs' comment, I have been snorting my soup through my nose (lunch time) :-)

  19. I call BS on this. Wasn't she once on a talkshow saying she brings a special light to hotels to look if it's clean and she brings Lysol with her to reclean? I might be confusing her but I don't think so.

  20. I believe her. L.A. craigslist has some AMAZING pieces, def not your run of the mill second-hand stuff. Anyone with a good eye and a nice bank account can do quite well!

  21. Olivia Wilde was featured in Real Simple or In Style magazine several months ago and she said a lot of her stuff was from Craigslist as well. She had some really beautiful pieces, too.

My point is...Olivia Wilde said it first.

LA Craigslist is great, but expensive. That said, I've furnished almost my entire house through Craigslist, yard sales, thrift stores, eBay and especially estate sales. I'd never buy a second-hand mattress though. Never had a problem with bugs or funky stains/smells because I thoroughly examine everything before I buy. I don't think she's picking them up herself, and she probably has everything professionally cleaned, but I could see this happening. Good for her, if it's true.

  23. Haha, my dad gave me my furniture, so I didn't have to worry about bugs and all that other nastiness. Before that, we sat on the floor. But I look at my couch with the stain from...well, you know (gotta break it in lol), and think about what other people have done on their furniture, so that kinda keeps me from buying things like couches and mattresses from Craigslist. We just don't have anything worth buying here, maybe if I lived in LA, but not here.
