I found the whole night pretty disappointing, awards wise. I was only really pleased for Meryl Streep (mostly because of her excellent speech), Alec Baldwin (who wasn't even there!) and Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett (mostly because their win denied U2 and Macca!).
ReplyDeleteRicky Gervais was good and biting. Could have used more of him. Absolutely loved his off hand introduction of Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Ha!
The night was pretty much summed up by Cameron winning for film and Director. What a joke.
Who honestly thought Avatar would win? And James Cameron? Sandra Bullock? I haven't seen The Blind Side. I thought The Hurt Locker or Precious would win, but secretly cheered for Inglorious Basterds. I'm very happy for Michael C. Hall.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Streep's win was a standout for me. As usual, she was eloquent without seeming disingenuine, and in my opinion, she is one of the best actresses alive today.
ReplyDeleteMy question is why can't they hire funny writers for these things? The jokes are always horrid and flat, and it seems like a colossal waste of time. I just wish they'd give the names of the nominees, announce the winner and be done with it!
Glad Sandra Bullock won. Didn't see the film, but she seems like good people. Also, extremely happy that Michael C. Hall won, and not because he has cancer. Dexter is fantastic and he deserves to be acknowledged for it.
I agree with you Beth. Gervais was the best part of the night. I almost pissed myself laughing at his Paul McCartney joke and watching the audience's reaction.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for the Dexter and Glee love. But I didn't watch the show because 24 was on!
ReplyDeleteThe Blind Side is good but I haven't seen anything else for the actresses up against her.
I was more confused by Julianna Margulies' win than almost anything else. Have these people not watched Damages or Mad Men?!?
Mad Men is fantastic and deserves every Best Drama award it wins. That said, I'm glad January Jones did NOT win. She's the weak link of the cast.
ReplyDeleteBummed Jane Lynch lost. Thrilled for Michael C. Hall. He was as fantastic as David Fisher as he is Dexter, epic talent there, especially when you compare how diverse those two roles are and how convincing he is in each.
Really glad Sandra won. She was subtly excellent in The Blind Side. It looked effortless. Haven't seen Sherlock Holmes, but love RDJ. Deserving wins.
ReplyDeleteI was mostly surprised by The Hangover. Loved the movie, but thought they'd have no chance. Guess I was wrong.
Most happy for Kevin Bacon's win for Taking Chance. Well deserved !!Great HBO movie, liked it much more than Grey Gardens.
ReplyDeleteHe is not recognized nearly enough...imo
This post was a waste of space. Seriously? You actually took the time to create this?
ReplyDeletei'm super pissed that the Hurt Locker lost but i guess h-wood wouldn't know an exceptional movie if it bit them in the ass. Cameron can suck it. hate that guy.
ReplyDeletethere's slight redemption in the fact that John Lithgow was recognized. he certainly deserved it- especially in THAT company (no offence NPH)
Dammit. I missed all the Ricky and can't get over it. I only saw his one joke about Mel Gibson and that alone had me howling.
ReplyDeleteI hope they rebroadcast the whole thing :(
VERY happy about Christoph Waltz winning!
I just watched Julie & Julia last night so I def. think Meryl was worthy. Not sure about all the others because I still haven't seen everything yet. Was happy for RDJ b/c I just like him. I like Jeff Bridges speech too.
ReplyDeleteI love Ricky Gervais but GOD he made me cringe. I'm glad most of the people took his insults ok, except for Jen A. who looked PISSED.
hey RocketQueen
ReplyDeleteYou can watch it on www.ninjavideo.net if you don't want to wait for a rebroadcast on tv.
:)
Thanks empyrios!! I'm dying to know what he said about Jen!
ReplyDeleteAren't the GG a usually reliable indicator of how Oscar's going to go (or is at least leaning)?
ReplyDeleteBullock only got it because her dumbed down for masses movie made tons of money. It's a sad day when she wins over HELEN MIRREN. Soon Jennifer Aniston will win something over Judi Dench.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the movies the other nominated actresses were in (An Education, Precious and the Young Victoria) and one of them deserved it. I felt really bad for Carey Mulligan--she looked upset.
So happy for Michael C Hall and John Lithgow, but especially MCH-- with all he is going through it is so great that he has finally gotten the recognition he totally deserves. Would have been great for the show to win too, but Mad Men was great this season too.
ReplyDeleteI havent seen Avatar (not surei even plan to) but i really have a hard time believing its better than the Hurt Locker... Kinda seems like the Globes recognize quality when it comes to tv and mass audience appeal when it comes to movies?
Jackie & MCH (and everyone else, too)--so what are you waiting for? Get out there & see Sherlock Holmes, damn it! Definitely worth your money, and a whole lot of fun, and IMNSHO a well-deserved win for RDJ, whose speech was an absolute hoot. (I call bullshit on the "I didn't write a speech" claim--either that, or he's even better at improv than I thought.) This is supposedly the first time anyone's actually won any kind of big award for playing Holmes, esp. considering he's the most-portrayed movie character ever, and I couldn't help but wonder if there might be some kind of...well not quite "payback", but...a lot of people last year seemed to feel that, were it not for certain unfortunate events, he would have had an excellent shot at Best Supporting Actor at both the GGs & the Oscars. Perhaps there was a certain amount of "sorry we couldn't give it to you last year, but, you know *sigh* ...anyway, here's your award!" going on? Anyway, good to see him win, and perhaps we'll see him on the Oscar red carpet, too?... ;-)
ReplyDeleteOverall, I don't think these are too bad. I'm happiest about Christoph Waltz. He was so damned amazing.
