Chris Brown Wal-Mart Update

Sharon e-mailed me to say she had called the Connecticut Wal-Mart to thank the manager for not stocking the Chris Brown CD. Apparently though she is the only one who has called to support the decision. Chris Brown fans have been calling to get them to stock it. I am hoping that everyone can call today and tell them not to stock it. Pass along the phone number in your Twitter and Facebook and however else you can think of to spread the word.

  5. They just told me the same Jax. I told them I thought it was disgusting. Anyone have the number of WalMart headquarters?

  6. Hi -- I am a longtime lurker who finally decided to participate in this great community. I called the number and was transferred to customer service. The rep who answered told me that they do stock the CD and were just out of stock when Chris Brown showed up. They will be getting more stock in soon.

When I told her that I actually did not support Walmart selling the CD and why, she said I needed to call their national office (the phone # was something like 1-800-wal-mart (so original). I will try to call later to lodge my opinion.

  7. I tried to call and noone answered the phone except for an automated system which then disconnected me (I am guessing it is overwhelmed). I went to the Wal-Mart site and entered my feedback via e-mail. The link is here http://www.walmart.com/cservice/cu_comments_online.gsp?cu_heading=8. I googled the phone number and got the area code and address for the store for the store which is
844 N Colony Rd, Wallingford, CT 06492. I am hoping the feedback filters through their corporate offices first.

  8. I know I should care about this more than I do. I am not a fan or anything, I don't condone domestic violence, and I would not buy his album but I am not angry enough to call walmart. Ronnie Wood is just as terrible for practically strangling that child woman he was dating. Courtney Love has probably permanently warped Francis Bean. There are a lot of people out there that suck.

  9. This cracks me up, because look at who made it on People of Walmart.com today!

  10. OMG--I'm sorry but this is just ridiculous. I do NOT condone domestic violence in any way HOWEVER, this young man has apologized, completed his punishment and yet you all are still trying to sabotage his career?? What more can a person do? He isn't a career criminal--this happened once and no one is willing to give him a chance to prove his sincerety? Whatever happened to forgiveness? Even Rhianna has forgiven him so why shouldn't we? I'll bet most of you people who are so willing to call Walmart also call yourselves Christians.

  12. I know this won't be a popular response but didn't he plead guilty and served his sentence? We, as a society, want people brought to justice and then when they are, feel the need to continually punish the offender.

What will Chris Brown learn from being unable to earn a living? Just like the guy let out of prison after serving his sentence, if he is prevented from earning a living, he will return to criminal means. (Tho in CB's case, he wasn't committing a crime to earn a living.)

If you don't want to give Chris Brown and his record company money, then don't buy his CD. I don't think we should fault any retailer from carrying CB's CDs. That isn't justice; that's revenge. And the way I was raised, we aren't the ones who exact revenge.

(FYI, definitely NOT condoning what CB did, but he did plead guilty and was sentenced accordingly.)

  15. SistahGirl-

So if we're not Christians, we're expected to partake in behavior you deem abhorrent? That's a bit bigoted and ridic, don't you think? It's not very nice to say things like that so close to your lord and savior's birthday!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Now that Wal-Mart has confirmed that they are indeed stocking it, why are we continuing to direct all of this attention to this one retailer. There are retailers across the country stocking his CD. Are we prepared to start campaigning against all of them? What about iTunes? Shall we take on Apple for selling his album there? Best way to send a message is with your wallet and encouraging other people to do the same. But campaigning against the retailers that sell his CD isn't going to be successful and will just result in giving him more attention and publicity, thus likely, increasing his sales. Let him sink into obscurity. That is the worst fate he could suffer.

  17. it's crazy!
a guy beat his girlfriend,he sells well his music!
another guy cheats his wife,he loses sponsors and his life

  18. I have a lot of hate in me for Chris Brown, but I have a lot more hate for Roman Polanski and his supporters, and somehow I don't think Polanski's (or Woody Allen's, or Martin Scorsese's) movies will be refused showings anywhere.

I would rather see racks and racks of CB's CD unsold in the stores. Let the PEOPLE speak, not the freaking corporation.

  19. Marisa,

You have clearly missed my point which is that it is hypocrytical to confess to be a Christian and then attempt to destroy another human being. Everyone has the choice not to purchase this young man's music but calling Walmart and requesting they not stock his CD is stupid. Get a life people.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just don't buy his music ... it really is that simple. This horrible dude is continue to have fans no matter what anyone says or days.
Gotta know how to pick ur battles...this one (and quite frankly Chris Brown himself) simply not worth the effort.

    ReplyDelete
  21. please, don't act like the "people" are adults with good moral compasses because they aren't. they are young impressionable teens who think it's ok if they see his cd in the store.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So, if I am not a Christian, it's ok to call WalMart?

    ReplyDelete
  23. "it is hypocrytical to confess to be a Christian and then attempt to destroy another human being"

    you mean like Chris Brown?

Let's not get in a pissing match about Christians and hypocrisy..they're like PB&J.

  24. You know what? How many times have you fucked up BIG TIME and gotten another chance? I AM NOT A CHRIS BROWN FAN, NOR DO I CONDONE WHAT HE DID TO RIHANNA. But for crying out loud, if someone wants to buy his CD, who the hell are you people to try to stop that? I comment on her occassionally, and usually with the same attitude as most, but I just have to say that this is out of hand. He didn't MURDER ANYONE - and how many of THOSE PEOPLE have gotten second chances?? GIVE THE GUY A BREAK! You don't have to buy his CD, but who are you to tell other people what they can & can't buy!

HOPE I haven't offended any of you, and hope I am still welcome to post here in the future, but ENOUGH already! HE SCREWED UP...who among us hasn't!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. SistahGirl: trying to "destroy" Chris Brown would involve a baseball bat and a dark alley.

Making a phone call to Walmart requesting that they not stock his CD (so that Chris Brown is unable to make millions of dollars after his extended "it ain't my fault" publicity tour) isn't really "destroying", in my book. Of course, my book isn't the bible.

(But I do think the bible has some good examples, though: pillar of salt, locusts, etc. Wonder where I can get a lot of locusts?)

Aside from a debate about censorship, there's the entire forbidden fruit argument that can be made. If CB's audience is made up of "young impressionable teens" isn't there some parental responsibility to monitor their purchases?

  27. Leila, you're right about the Bible and locusts, etc. But people weren't the ones who brought the plagues except by their own bad actions.

I think karma is a universal truth. Every culture I can think of (from primitive on up) has such a philosophy whether you say "what comes around goes around," "the golden rule," "what you give out comes back threefold," etc. So it's gotta be true.

Whatever Chris Brown has done, he has paid in a court of law and the court of public opinion. If he is truly reformed, then he should go on his merry way. If he commits another crime, he should pay, on Earth and elsewhere. If he's a bad person, it will come back to him. But those who wish to harm him physically or otherwise are only bringing bad karma upon themselves.

Let the person who is without sin cast the first stone. All I know is, I'm not that person.

For me, wishing harm on Chris Brown takes too much energy out of the time that I have left on Earth. What you want to do with your time and energy is up to you.

  28. Pffft. I'll just hide the Chris Brown CDs whenever I go to a store that sells them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The problem with Chris Brown is that he really ISN'T sorry. He paraded around on tropical vacations right after it happened and continued to live his carefree partying lifestyle. He has done nothing outside of putting on a stupid bow tie and making a half-assed attempt at apologizing(only after his handlers prompted him to). He's a creep and I will never buy his music.

  30. Sistahgirl,
The reason I will call/e-mail/write Wal-Mart as well as other retailers is because there is a nation of women silently living with domestic violence. By voicing MY opinion against retailers stocking the album of a man who is a proven abuser, I am helping to give those women (and men) a voice. I know Chris Brown is a young man and may deserve a second chance, but second chances need to be earned and in my opinion he has done little to nothing to earn it. For me, domestic violence is a very personal issue. I have both experienced it and I also have had a friend lose their life at the hands of an abusive husband. Urging retailers to discontinue sales of this CD might be a futile effort, but if in the pursuit of trying to spread the word one person decides to leave an abusive situation, it's worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like Adventurous Kate's idea! It may be juvenile, but it's effective on a short-term basis - and it screws with his sales and the idiots who would buy his music!

    ReplyDelete
  32. As a formerly abused woman, I thank you Michelle for your thoughtful comments. If it brings light to this issue, whats the harm. (OK..I do feel a little sorry for the poor clerks at Walmart. The one I spoke to thanked me for my input.)

    ReplyDelete
  33. SistahGirl,

No, I followed your point completely. What made me dismiss your point as coming from someone who is closed-minded and small-town was your reference to Christians only.

Just trying to follow how your logic applies to me- not a Christian.

And he's not a young man, he's a little boy who beat up a woman and did nothing to make up for it, save for the bare minimum to draw up publicity. He's a loser.

  34. I'm a criminal defense attorney (court appointed) who routinely represents people accused of physically abusing their significant others. Do you know what happens to MY clients when they do what Chris Brown did? They are looked in a cold, dark cell for months at a time with three basic meals a day. They sleep on a thin mat on a concrete floor. While they are in jail, they lose their jobs. When they are released, jobless, they often find that they are evicted from their homes. With no place to go, they resort to other crimes (stealing, burglary, drug dealing) to get by. MY clients pay for what they do. Chris Brown did not spend a day in jail. He's a multi-millionaire. He travels the world and hangs with the wealthiest people in the world. How has he paid for his crime? Boo hoo, a few stores do not stock his record. That's really hurting him (sarcasm)

    ReplyDelete
  35. whole lotta, if this weren't Walmart, I'd sorda agree, but they have long made 'moral' choices on behalf of their consumers with refusing to sell XXX lyrics like 2 Live Crew and pulling cd's because the cover was offensive. those were independent choices made by wallyworld, not consumer complaint driven...so why now are they not taking a stance? walmart has LONG been in the bidness of censorship.

  36. @ Marisa - I'm with you. I'm not a Christian and don't understand why anyone's dragging religion into this. Then again, I'm Canadian and don't understand why it matters why the religion of American politicians is so carefully scrutinized by the public and media. It really doesn't come up here!

  37. Tater, where do you live? A first-time offender pleads guilty to felony assault and spends MONTHS locked up? Your prisons must have lots of room.

Reminder: He has a felony on his record. He is on probation for five years. He must complete a year of domestic violence or be taken to jail. Plus, he has to stay 50 yards from Rhianna (10 at industry events) and did complete court-ordered community service.

Where I live, whether you are rich or poor, that's usually what happens.

I'm NOT condoning domestic violence, but put it in context. It was his first offense. Where I live (and I have been working in the courts here for years), first-time offenders often are given non-jail dispositions in hopes of catching the ones who are able to turn their lives around. But if they screw up, they are sent to jail (or prison, depending on the severity of the crime).

Tater, the scenario you are painting is the reason WHY there is so much recidivism in this country. People who commit crimes are PREVENTED from living law-abiding lives because they can't find jobs, they can't find affordable housing, they lose their families and all hope. They don't have the tools or resources or capacity to know any better, so they do what they did before.

Continuing this cycle isn't going to help anybody, from the offender to the victims to potential victims.

Tater, you sound very jaded. Career change, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  38. In my state, felony assault carries a penalty of 5-10 years so yes, even a first time offender can spend months in jail. I agree that there are better ways to deal with criminals than incarceration. There are very few court ordered programs that my clients can go to. They cannot afford private counseling or rehab for the most part.

I'm sorry if I sound jaded but I'm really not. I honestly love my job. It's just that I hate that this guy got a break because of who he is and how much money he has is now whining because some merchants are not selling his albums. My clients would love to have the "problems" that Chris Brown does.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's Chris' fault that we're calling Walmart. If he hadn't bitched and complained like he did I wouldn't have noticed it was a problem.

Now I really MUST e-mail Walmart and give them my two cents.

Thanks for the e-mail address guys.

  40. jax - good point. I think they didn't carry Guns 'n Roses back in the day, and the selective censorship is inexcusable.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As much as this guy disgusts me, I think we need to pick our fights and I don't think this is one I choose to fight in. I'll save my energy for Roman Polanski.

  42. Amen, Rocketqueen.

And let me add I have nothing against folks from small towns and I don't think people from small towns are stupid. It's small minds that suck.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i don't get what's the problem.

if you don't like him don't buy his albums.
If others want to buy his albums well let them buy it...this is america after all and he did serve time whether you like it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I want to know why religion came into it? Whoever metioned Christianity in the first place is part of the problem. Boo!
