Wow! He has had a part in so many great movies. If I had to pick it would be Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I have it on DVD I am in love with it that much.
ReplyDeleteRIP

ReplyDeleteBreakfast Club, for sure. It's timeless.
ReplyDeleteWow, I had no idea he was so prolific. What a terrible loss.
Tie.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast Club
Some Kind of Wonderful
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Goodbye to a comic genius~ RIP Mr. Hughes.....xox
Having been a awkward teenage girl at the time of the film's release, I have to go with:
ReplyDeleteSixteen Candles
I have it on VHS and I'm waiting for a 'super special' DVD version to buy again...
Breakfast Club is a close second.
RIP. A great loss to films....
I am constantly quoting Weird Science and Vacation.
ReplyDeleteRIP
Ferris and Breakfast Club. As you said, soundtrack to my youth, RIP John.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to go with National Lampboon's European Vacation (that scene in the train just kills me), though my bf would vote for Xmas Vacation.
ReplyDeleteRIP Hughes!
Breakfast Club. It's one my all time favourite movies in general. I also really loved Some Kind Of Wonderful, and Pretty In Pink.
ReplyDeleteThe Breakfast Club
ReplyDeleteSome Kind of Wonderful
Sixteen Candles
:( SO SAD. honestly his movies were among my favourites....
ReplyDeletebreakfast club
sixteen candles
pretty in pink
RIP
Christmas Vacation, it would not be the holidays without watching at least three times.
ReplyDeleteGoing with the teenage girl/awkward stage comment -
ReplyDelete16 candles, though I loved breakfast club too.
RIP.
All of them. For different reasons. 16 Candles was like teen girl wish fulfillment fantasy. Ferris was iconic. I remember laughing so hard I could barely breathe at Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
ReplyDeleteWow...this one really hits hard.
ReplyDeleteAs for choosing a favorite...just can't. There are so many good ones.
Breakfast Club.
ReplyDelete"Did your Mom marry Mr. Rogers?"
"Um, no. Mr. Johnson."
Plus, Vernon was a hoot.
Vacation is a close second for me.
Pretty In Pink =(
ReplyDeleteSuch a good talent, never realized he brought us soo many good movies, though he gets a pass for Maid in Manhattan....
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. most def.
ReplyDeleteHe was the Brat Pack King! I had no idea he did this many movies.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a wee one, definitely Home Alone. I identified with Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) so well, because we're both so mischievous.
I watched Ferris Buller's Day Off when I was in middle school, and that changed everything. My truancy nearly doubled after watching this movie. No one skipped as much school in high school as I did. One of my favorite movies ever.
RIP
The eighties were fun for me.
ReplyDeleteSixteen Candles
Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Home Alone
Pretty In Pink
I have many, and I'm glad he directed so many good movies that I can't choose just one. :)
R.I.P. John Hughes
I don't think I can pick. I would retire if I just had $10 for every time I have watched:
ReplyDeleteThe Breakfast Club
All the "Vacation" movies
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Ferris Bueller
Sixteen Candles
Mr. Mom
Home Alone
"She's Having a Baby" .. love that movie still.
ReplyDeleteGodspeed John .. Chicago weeps at your loss.
Some Kind of Wonderful because he turned me on the beauty of Eric Stoltz...
ReplyDeleteUncle Buck because of the glorious dialogue between John Candy and Macauly Culkin. "I'm a kid, it's my job."
He was a genius and I will miss him and will honor him by watching his movies over and over and over.
My childhood has slowly died this year... MJ, Farrah and now John Hughes.
I made reference to Kevin Smith's love of John in the random pics area .. but here is the article that drew me to that fact .. John Hughes' imprint remains .. and as far as lot of people are concerned .. always will.
ReplyDeleteSo very sad .. I cannot tell you what his films meant to a lot of my friends in Chicago. My friend Tom was moved to become a film maker because of John Hughes. Sad sad sad.
I'm going to have to go with National Lampboon's European Vacation (that scene in the train just kills me), though my bf would vote for Xmas Vacation.
ReplyDeleteOh my God. I remember almost wetting myself watching that scene. The scene at the Oktoberfest was hysterical as well.
I love 'Breakfast Club', 'Weird Science', 'Some kind of Wonderful' (God, Eric Stoltz was hot and Lea Thompson was the most beautiful and most perfect girl on earth for me), 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', the 'National Lampoons' movies, the movie with John Candy and Steve Martin and 'Dennis the Menace'. The scene with that homeless guy farting his guts out. Priceless!
Pretty In Pink
ReplyDeleteFerris Bueller's Day Off
The Great Outdoors
Home Alone and everything before that are classics! Sorry I can't choose...
ReplyDeleteRIP
Oh, Weird Science. One of the first movies I ever saw and I still love it today.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast Club is #2. I had a mad crush on Judd Nelson for years.
"Bueller? Bueller?"
ReplyDeleteHeck, there are times when I'll actually break out into song... and it's usually "Daanke Shein". I love that movie.
Definitely Sixteen Candles.
ReplyDelete"Lake. Big lake".
Uncle Buck and Mr. Mom for me: so many childhood memories watching those movies with my siblings over and over again!
ReplyDeleteFor my girlfriend, who is reading over my shoulder, Christmas Vacation is her favorite. All holiday season long she'll quote, "Don't throw me down Clark!"
I would say Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller tie for me.
ReplyDeleteRIP talented entertaining man. I'm sorry I've confused you with John Landis over the years.
Easy: Some Kind of Wonderful, it has the ending Pretty in Pink should have had.
ReplyDeleteMr. Mom
ReplyDeleteVacation
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Home Alone
Dennis the Menace !!
For some reason I found DtM really funny for the slapstick.
Hands down - The Breakfast Club
ReplyDeleteSixteen Candles, Dutch, and Christmas Vacation. My, it was hard to narrow it down to the top 3. Ferris Bueller, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Weird Science would be the 2nd top 3.
ReplyDeleteRIP, Mr. Hughes. Your movies will forever be the soundtrack of my youth and adolescence.
This is my first time posting...THAT's how much I loved his movies. The top 4 because I can't rank them beyond that is Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Some Kind of Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteRIP Mr. Hughes.
It's so hard to choose! But right now it's between skow and pretty in pink. I got in real trouble 9th grade when I told this girl who was my friend at the time..."break his heart, I'll break your face." over some loser guy who was my "bff/crush" at the time.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm always! Lea Thompson! LOL I'm not talking that movie, I just love her. Think she's underrated. Same goes for Jennifer Jason Leigh.
SIXTEEN CANDLES!
ReplyDeleteIt is so timeless! Not to mention Jake Ryan isn't too hard on the eyes ;)
"OOHHH SEXXY GIRLFRIEND!"
its actually.. "Those aren't pillows"!!
ReplyDeleteHow cool that his pen name was the Count of Monte Cristo.
ReplyDeleteAw. I really need a marathon this weekend.
Uncle Buck...
ReplyDelete"Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a RAT gnaw that thing off your face!"
LOVE IT.
RIP, Mr. Hughes.
We still use the following quotes:
ReplyDeleteWhile hungry: "Donger need food."
While standing in the middle of Prague, my friend asked me what we should do next. My answer: "You load up, you party."
Quintessential 80s
I honestly had no idea how much I loved this man's work or how much he did work.
ReplyDeleteFerris hands down. My girls will watch it now with me and love it just as much.
I loved Ducky. Pretty in Pink runs a close second. And Breakfast Club is tied. I went to Airdrie and back today and listened to 'Don't You Forget About Me' a few times. Weird.
I had such a crush on the Jake character in 16 Candles. I am still attracted to that look today.
And All of the Vacation movies. Seriously. Watched Vegas Vacation on the weekend in fact. And Christmas Vacation year round.
Be in peace Mr. Hughes. Many condolences to your family - you must have been an interesting man to know. Thank you. Just thank you.
I've watched Christmas Vacation the most times, but i also love Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, Pretty in Pink and the Breakfast Club.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't know how many awesome movies he had done. Amazing work for one man.
This just breaks my heart! I am one of the biggest John Hughes fans in the world - he brought Molly Ringwald to be my childhood idol!! Pretty in Pink basically inspired my entire youthful persona.
ReplyDeleteSixteen Candles is my teen years. Love that movie.
ReplyDeleteThis is a sad day.
ReplyDeleteOMG...soooo many to choose from.
ReplyDeleteI think Pretty in Pink is my favourite, followed closely by Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles...but I LOVE Weird Science (young RDJ anyone?) and Ferris Bueller...
...and Some Kind of Wonderful kind of mirrored my own teen angst (except I didn't end up with the guy at the end *pout*).
Wow...just going through that list again and there are soooo many big actors that got their start or became known with JH movies.
ReplyDeleteFavourite JH line:
No more yankie my wankie--the Donger need FOOD!!!
Love, love, love Uncle Buck. Christmas Vacation is played during our Christmas Eve celebrations every year. It's a tradition.
ReplyDeleteSo many favorites on this list.
ReplyDeleteFerris Bueller
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Home Alone
Christmas Vacation
Sixteen Candles
I am so sad about this, his movies were all wonderful in their own way. The Breakfast Club really and truly changed my life when I was in high school. And Ferris Bueller is the only movie that can consistently turn my frown upside down, for realz.
ReplyDeleteother cheryl
Ferris Bueller's Day Off changed my life, and then Some Kind of Wonderful changed it again.
ReplyDeletePretty in Pink. It was a great cast.
ReplyDeleteFor my husband - Ferris Bueller. Fave line in French:
Ferris, les miles ne diminue pas.
For both of us - Christmas Vacation. How many of us have seen people deck their house out like the Griswalds?
Wow...him & Cameron Crowe truly putting a expectation on what every young person thought high school meant. First loves, self-discovery, and freedom...he will be truly missed.
ReplyDeleteCall me a purest but when I was 12--(this would be 1997), I stayed home sick from school and Ferris Bueller came on tv. And it changed my life. Cliche but... "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
RIP, John Hughes who brought us blaine, jake ryan, and ferris bueller.
Just reading those films was walking thru my teen years.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED 16 Candles. I still watch it if I really need to laugh.
Every time I hear Danke Schoen I see Ferris.
(SIGH) going off to listen to Psychedelic Furs Pretty in Pink now.
I just thought of all those movies that were SO iconic during my teen years and I look to now when the teen movies of my nephews time are High School Musical. All things considered I'll take my teen movies over his.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr.Hughes! You will be missed.
Anything in the 80's was the best era for his movies.
ReplyDelete"No more yankee my wankee, the donga need food!"
ReplyDeleteWow! My heart felt a small tear, he was the grown up that understood my childhood/teenage years! He will be so missed. His movies shaped my perspective, so much so that my daughter has seen most of the movies listed with me. She's only 11.
For the top spot it would be a fight between Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. Weird Science, Sixteen Candles and Ferris are all favorites too. She's Having a Baby always makes me cry when Kevin Bacon is in the waiting room. He did some seriously great work. RIP
ReplyDeleteI love them all but Weird Science and Vacation hold special places in my heart.
ReplyDeleteIt may make me a super geek, but not a week goes by that I don't quote a John Hughes movie.
Top quote: You're stewed buttwad
My dad remarried when I was in 5th grade ('93) and the only good thing his wife brought into my life was The Breakfast Club on VHS. The first weekend my brother and I watched it at least 10 times and then every single time I stayed at their house after that. I've seen this movie probably 10x more than any other movie and its the only one I can quote from beginning to end.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad. I feel like a part of my childhood is gone now. My favorite movies of his are Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, Vacation, European Vacation and Planes Trains and Automobiles.
ReplyDeleteDo I have to pick one! Probably 16 Candle but Pretty in Pink, Breakfast CLub and Weird Science are close 2nds
ReplyDeleteWho can pick? RIP Mr. Hughes.
ReplyDeleteI love so many of his movies. This bites. My top 3 are:
ReplyDeletePlanes, Trains, and Automobiles
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller will always have a special place in my heart.
ReplyDelete"Bueller ... Bueller ...." was the punchline to many inside jokes back in the day. :)
Breakfast Club edges out Ferris, Sixteen, and Some Kind for the winner in my book. First movies I ever saw where someone actually "got it" (what I felt the meaning of life really was). I don't even know how many lines I still quote to this day--there are so many of them that pop up at random moments, and still make me smile when I use 'em even if no one else knows what I'm talking about!
ReplyDeleteI still use "Bueller...Bueller" in my classes today...and I usually get at least one or two students who laugh :)
I loved Pretty in Pink, but wow, Ferris Bueller spoke to the masses. I really loved it, and loved the Danke Schoen part.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to introduce my 22 year old sister to Pretty In Pink, Breakfast Club, 16 Candles. I'm always surprised when she mentions that she hasn't seen them.
ReplyDeleteThank you John Hughes :-)
@jlb,
ReplyDeletewow, you just made me realize why I like that look in men, too. It was Jake!
Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
