The biggest topic around the office yesterday was not whether I would be drunk again by the end of the day but rather Jerry O'Connell enrolling in law school. Beginning this week Jerry started attending classes at Southwestern Law School. He will be attending part-time and at night.
The big question everyone asked here was why? Jerry is 35, which is probably close to the average age for night students at the school, but no one could figure out why he would subject himself to the torture of law school when he could make much more money doing a sequel of Kangaroo Jack than he could in several years of practicing law. Normally law school takes three years to complete but that is for a full-time student. A student going part time is probably going to finish in about 4 to 4.5 years. Also, just because you are going at night doesn't mean the classes are going to change or that you get to study less. He has brand new twins and although he doesn't currently have a day job this just seems like a really odd choice.
I know his last television series bombed but it isn't like he hasn't had success in the past. He could be attending because down the road he wants to help people with his degree and do good things and that would certainly be noble. He could be attending because acting is boring to him now and he wants more education. Again, that is very noble but I am not sure he quite understands just how hard law school is and how many hours he will have to study. There were some stories earlier in the week that said he was going to be staying at home with the kids while Rebecca Romijn went back to work. Umm, if he is going to try and study and take care of twins at the same time it won't be long before they have a nanny or two.
I wish him well, I just don't understand it.

ReplyDeleteCriminal justice is a big issue for me, so if I had the money and time, I would go to law school just like Jerry (I'm 37). I think it's great he's doing it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I doubt he actually wants to become a lawyer. Just taking the classes and learning can be enjoyable, but my guess is also a greater role in politics.
ReplyDeleteWhy would he need to go to law school to be a politician....you could be anything to be a politician ( besides a criminal, stripper, prostitute, or anything unsavory)?

I know this girl in my med school class whose like 35 years old and another one whose like 50.
I suppose its never to late to start or finish your goals.

ReplyDeleteI'm with Jax on this one. I say good for him. Some of us like to have our minds challenged and keep learning. I for one am in my early 40's and really want to go back to school, but find something that can also provide me a decent living in Europe where I hope to end up eventually :-)

I know PLENTY of men and women that went back to school for grueling subjects - law, accounting, doctorates, etc. They managed to juggle work, schooling, and family.

ReplyDeleteLaw school sucks, but at least he probably has enough money to cover tuition, so if he determines he doesn't like it when he graduates, he won't be stuck practicing. Like me. Boo.

I say good for him. He has the financial means and the support from his family. I don't see anything wrong with it. I think because he's in an already high-paying career that gives him whatever he wants makes some question his decision.

Actually, I've always wanted to go to law school, but I've never wanted to become an attorney. How odd is that?

Snarkiness aside (or not)... I don't think it's easy to cheat in law school, is it?! Good for him to be interested in reading more than the tabloids.
he will not stick with it. he has no idea what law school demands. and frankly he should be using his time at home to get to know his daughters, not with his head in a law book.

that's interesting. One of my son's relatives is a dean at Southwestern ... I'll have to get some scoop on this for the CDANers.
ReplyDeleteThis is total BS. When did he have time to study for and pass the LSAT all while "acting", being a stoner's husband and raising two newborn babies? AGAIN, BS!!! Must be nice to have connections because there is no way in hell he could pass the LSAT with his lifestyle. It requires more time than someone in his profession requires (unless you're really intelligent like James Franco, which Jerry is absolutely NOT)!!!
