Katie Holmes On So You Think You Can Dance
OK, so I watched it. I watched Katie Holmes singing and dancing for two minutes and thirty seconds. It wasn't the longest two minutes I have spent in my life, but there was nothing spectacular about her dancing. In fact, it kind of looked like something you would see in a middle school recital. Katie tried to be sexy, but she just doesn't do sexy anymore. I think that part of her has pretty much been cleaned out. I can't believe she went what seemed like everyday for two months and this was all they could come up with for her, especially considering it wasn't live or anything and could take as long as they wanted. The one positive note is that her singing is really good. I know it was pre-recorded but she has a decent voice.
If you watch the video, there is a part about 1 minute in where she is talking and then starts scratching her arm. There was something about it that creeped me out. Like it was some type of nervous tic or reaction. I'm probably just overreacting, but see what you think.
Uhm WTF was that?!?!
ReplyDeleteShe was terrible, beyond stiff and just a mess.
It was secret zenu sign language.
ReplyDeleteI was not impressed at all.
ReplyDeleteDidn't notice the arm scratching the first time, but I did thing ... man, those Scientos must have given her some media training.
Thank yoou Montana - my sentiments. What a waste of 5 minutes of my life. And Enty - I noticed the arm scratching, too? We need to consult a body language specialist to see if that means anything. Maybe it was code for "Get me out of here!" or something...
ReplyDeleteI need to learn to type...lol.
ReplyDeleteI CAN'T, I WON'T WATCH....IMAGINING IS BAD ENOUGH....
ReplyDeleteI saw this video earlier and I totally noticed that arm scratch, too. At the time I just thought it was a rude/bored reaction. I couldn't sit through the song and dance, though.
ReplyDeleteShe LOOKED very pretty. Okay, that's the best compliment I could give this performance, or whatever it was.
ReplyDeleteDid she strut? Yes.
Did she dance? No.
Did she sing? I don't know.
Did she lip-sync? Definitely.
Was it live? No
End of story.
that's the best she's looked in a long time. not the most inspiring performance but she does have a decent voice.
ReplyDeleteas for the arm scratch, c'mon! she's just scratching her frickin' arm. who gives a shit?
i think the arm scratch is Xenu speak for...my arm itches.
ReplyDeletebad bad bad. her voice was ok, but zero power to it, sounded weak and watered down.
we all know this is the start to Katie's comeback post Tommy Girl.
Color me disappointed too. I thought a girl like Katie who started out in the biz singing and dancing would be similarly skilled to the contenstants on the show. She was so stiff and NOT DANCING. And after Ramalama by Wade Robson, she just looked that much worse by comparison.
ReplyDeleteAlso, why was she approached to found Dizzy Feet? Of all the musical actors on Broadway, Katie Holmes? I really don't understand the entertainment business if Katie Holmes is considered a dancer worth featuring, while most of the great contestants of the show will never be heard from again.
WOW. She looks completely ancient. Poor girl.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the arm scratch - it reminded me of that wierd interview Heath Ledger did shortly before he od'd - obviously not as bad, but that's what it reminded me of.
ReplyDeleteShe's got nice legs, that's about as positive as I can go for the dance. And she didn't fall down.
LOL omg just noticed the guy on the left in the pic looks like Tommy a bit lol
ReplyDeleteMichael K's blurb about this had me rolling in the aisles when I read it.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the arm scratch when it aired and it seemed really strange to me at the time. I mean who scratches themselves during an interview? Did she forget she was being filmed? It was just an odd lapse of concentration. I'm with you. Enty. Something was just not right with both the interview and the dancing.
ReplyDeleteAlso when Cat Deeley interviewed her Katie would not look into the camera. Instead she kept looking at Cat which made me feel like I had to turn my head sideways just to see her face.
ReplyDeleteNot picking on her but it was an awkward interview. I would have thought being an actress she knows when to look into the camera and speak.
Agree with notonmydollar - she strutted, she did not dance. And I loathed her voice. It has that baby-talk quality that Spears uses, though somehow Britney makes it sound robotic, too. There's talent for ya.
ReplyDeleteBut on top of that, she applied these mediocre skills to a number made famous by THE JUDY GARLAND!! I thought she was vain or stupid, but now realize that it must have been Tom's idea. It's got the happy message, and the balls behind thinking you could do Judy sounds so SciTi.
She is just weird. For the first time, I am starting to seriously consider that her marriage is an arrangement and that part of the arrangement is to (attempt to) advance her career. I even wonder if she is supposed to be developing this fabulous career as a cover story for their divorce--you know, like Katie wanted to concentrate on her career or something.
ReplyDeleteI don't know...Something is amiss. That arm scratching was really hinky, like you could see her mind going somewhere else while she was talking.
some good: she is in great shape. her body looks GREAT. her voice sounded good, but she was DEFINITELY lip-synching (duh!). she was doing this for charity.
ReplyDeleteENTY - totally saw the arm scratch too and she threw me off. i didnt get it. nervous twitch or something...
some bad: she didnt really dance. i was disappoitned. did anyone notice her hair...i dunno, it looked odd to me... where was suri? that was who i really wanted to see...
I thought that she did fine. This is being OVER ANALYZED by people. This woman is under a lot of pressure and it took guts to do this. Yeah, this is what she does for a living and it shouldn't be a big deal but for pete's sake, some of the comments are just brutal. She did just fine and hopefully some of her withered confidence will return and she can do more.
ReplyDeleteAnd she looked amazing!
I watched it last night and was completely underwhelmed. After all those pictures of her practicing day in and day out I expected some actual DANCING, not just strutting and posing. Lame.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to her post-Tommy, though. I think there will be an announcement on that soon enough!
i'm sorry, but that hot mess spent how long practicing the britney spears dance? puhleez people. talentLESS. the hat, shoulder, kick, squat is NOT professional dancing. even the worst dancers on that show have more talent in their middle toe than she presented herself with. on the positive side, she can sing.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch the show and I didn't have any expectations, but now I've seen it and ...
ReplyDeleteHey, it was OK. I agree with Geebz. I think you guys are reading too much into the whole thing. It was a nice homage to Judy Garland and old-time musicals.
Lighten up, folks!
I think the real problem is that doing "Get Happy" instantly brings to mind Judy Garland. Katie just doesn't have the voice or genuine performance style that Judy did.
ReplyDeleteHer singing was good? Seriously?
ReplyDeleteWtf, does he make her work out 5 hours a day or what? Her biceps are huge.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought she did well with the singing. It's a shame that no matter what, the majority of folks who see that (including myself) are just thinking 'sham marriage. sham marriage. sham marriage.'
The biggest problem with her performance is that I think everyone expected to be wowed and we weren't.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but Judy Garland is my favorite entertainer of ALL TIME and in my opinion, Katie did it a real disservie.
That said, who could ever truly emulate the great Judy Garland?
Oh...and I noticed the arm scratch too and while distracting, perhaps she just had an itch?
she's so dishonest about her life and it shows in every performance since the arranged marriage. she's aging so quickly, she's only 30 and appears mid 40's.
ReplyDeletewhy are we criticizing someone's performance that was done to bring attention to a charitable cause that she is involved in? Yes, her performance wasn't the greatest, but come on people, it was for a good cause, and she really put herself out there for it, cut katie some slack.

ReplyDeleteI have been reading scathing comments all over about this, and only feel safe enough to say anything here (LOL). I didn't think it was that bad, to be honest. No, she's no Judy Garland, true enough ... but I also watched the clip of Judy from Summer Stock where she does "Get Happy," and frankly, Judy doesn't do much but strut around the stage (hardly any real dancing). It's unfair to compare Katie Holmes to a legend ... but it's also just mean and unfair to disallow her to attempt to pay homage to someone who might be an idol of hers. She had the guts to do it, and it wasn't a shameful performance.
ReplyDeleteNow, the itching ... that's a whole different freaky thing.
LOL
Did anybody else catch the twitter that twat Shana Moakler wrote .. I gotta find it and post it, but she blasted poor Katie all across the Twitter nation. I actually didnt wathc it, but feel bad for Katie, she made a deal with devil and now he wants his part of the bargain!
ReplyDeleteI took this from I'm not Obsessed:
ReplyDeleteShanna Moakler took to her Twitter feed to talk about how much she hated it last night:
I am fckn INSULTED, Katie Holmes how dare you! maybe if I suck Tom Cruise off I can be Ann Miller for a day. Shame Shame Shame.
I didn't just grow up on musicals, I lived and breathed them, oklahoma, easter parade, family band, don't touch my legends! ur not worthy.
Who died and made Shanna Queen of the World?
I think the only reason people expected more was because of the hype that was doled out prior to the show..."Oscar worthy!" "A triple-threat!" etc etc... they way they publicized this thing sounded like she would blow the contestants out of the water. That, um, didn't quite happen. If there hadn't been the big publicity build-up I doubt so many people would be so critical.
ReplyDeleteCould I get up and do the moves she did? Oh, hell to the no. So yeah, she was very good from that aspect - but when you compare her to those kids on the show, or even some of the contestants who've been on DWTS for a TWO months practicing and dancing - the same amount of time she supposedly spent rehearsing - it just didn't measure up. Expectations were just set too high based on the pre-publicity, unfortunately.
She did, however, look incredibly beautiful.... props for that!
Ice Angel, ITA.
ReplyDeleteEven under the influence of drugs, Judy Garland STILL had more life in her eyes than Katie did. Xenu is a helluva drug.
"why are we criticizing someone's performance that was done to bring attention to a charitable cause that she is involved in?"
ReplyDeleteBecause it's a DANCE show and a DANCE charity. She insulted the top-notch contestants on this show.
does anyone remember that Fly's video she did in the 90's .. got you where I want you..? She looked sooo freaking sweet and cute :( Poor thing..she really does look stressed
ReplyDeletedoes anyone remember that Fly's video she did in the 90's .. got you where I want you..? She looked sooo freaking sweet and cute :( Poor thing..she really does look stressed
ReplyDeleteShe was AMAZING, people! AMAZING, the only adjective Scientolocultists know. (sarcasm)
ReplyDeleteArm scratching (other than an itch obviously) is meant to mean :
ReplyDelete) touching or scratching the arm/arms; don't like what they are feeling (emotionally)
which says a lot. Taken from here - http://www.ehow.com/how_2325882_read-body-language.html
Her singing was better than her Eli Stone venture was and yes, she didn't dance well, especially given the show she was on.
That said, her hair looked good and I suppose taking her life's frustration out in the gym works for her as those are a fab pair of legs.
pdxbellarocks, I remember that video, she was fab back in the day, which kinda makes what's going on now much worse to view.
i didn't find it that bad either. if you aren't used to doing that kind of dancing it can take a long time to get even the simple stuff right.
ReplyDeletethere was too much hype, definitely, and there were high expectations that didn't get met.
if she usually is a bad dancer, she's very decent here, not spectatular !
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how many people are actually analysing how she scratched her fucking arm. Are you serious? I scratch my arm when I'm itchy. How the hell is that rude or distracting or creepy??
ReplyDeleteGood God.
xenu lover
ReplyDeletejk
I watched this with no sound.
ReplyDeleteThe choreographer should have made better use of her long legs and had her strut with her legs stretched and the center of attention, Fosse-style.
As it was, she walked on bent legs.
I know she's not a trained dancer, and it shows, but she should have opened her torso up more and again, emphasized the legs.
All I have to say is:
ReplyDeleteOnce more with FEELING.
i love shanna moakler, that bitch has moxy!
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't dancing .. so much as posing. Granted .. I couldn't make it thought he whole thing. Maybe later in she turned into the living ghost of Fred Astaire?? Ya .. doubt it.
ReplyDeleteI liked it. As for the arm scratching, I was expecting some manic, distracting, can't stop scratching. It was a quick little scrathc...I think it itched and she was trying to scratch it w/o drawing that much attention to it...
ReplyDeleteyou can't read into everything!!
should this have been on SYTYCD???
ReplyDeleteIt felt like an audition. She didn't dance, sorry guys!
She didn't. She pranced, jazz handed, carried accross and, she hat held. That's it...That's called faking it.
Months and months???? Wish I could get away with that. It's a shame. I met her during the War of the Worlds premiere and she was soooo nice and different. She seemed alive. Didn't think it, but starting to: lobotomized.
First, in the interest of full disclosure, I couldn't dance my way out of Danny Bonaduce's ginge clutches. So anything I say about Mrs. Xenu's dancing is said with the understanding that even a zombie can dance better than I can.
ReplyDeleteI watched it first with the sound on and then tried Grace's method without sound.
Grace, you are right. She walks on bent legs.
Perhaps this is a permanent condition for her now, after the last few years of duck walking.
I got as far as the first 'Hallelujah.'
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it have been nice if they'd had an unknown who could actually sing and dance do this - and get the exposure they deserve?
Katie can't act or sing or dance. She needs to stay home.
Hey folks, this was NOT dancing. Just someone strutting around on a stage. And she supposedly spent weeks rehearsing this???? Katie - I hope you keep your day job. Her singing voice was ok, but the dancing was pitiful. I've seen better moves in high school musicals.
ReplyDelete@ grace- you got it dead-on! i think her choreographer sucked. she could have been outrageous and sexy w/ a little fosse in there, i just couldn't put my finger on it until you said it!
ReplyDeletegladys, some of those zombies dance really good! have you forgotten "thriller" so soon? :)
i can understand it taking so long to rehearse w/ that many other dancers, and while i think she was having fun, the performance was pretty lifeless. i noticed she even lost her camera at one point.
i'm sad for her, i hope her charity does well, though.
