I'm A Little Confused About This Whole Melissa Rycroft Engagement Thing

Yesterday I saw the news that former Bachelor and DWTS contestant Melissa Rycroft had got engaged over the weekend. Even if you don't watch The Bachelor, I'm sure you remember the controversy about how Melissa thought she was going to marry Jason Mesnick and then he ended up breaking up with her live on television in front of the world. So, then we all felt sorry for Melissa and ABC gave her the spot on Dancing With The Stars and that's that.

Her whole "thing" was that we were supposed to feel sorry for her for getting dumped and that she was truly in love with Jason the ass and that she had her heart broken.

So, when I read that she was engaged, I thought to myself, ok, that's a little fast, but its been five months so I could see it. Then I read more and discover that she and her boyfriend have been dating on and off for over two years and they took a break so she could go on The Bachelor. Ummm. WTF? They took a break so she could go see if she could find a guy to get married to on a television show? What kind of relationship is that? Now, I didn't watch the show but did she tell Jason the ass that she was taking a break from her long term boyfriend to be on the show?

Would that have been something Jason discovered and would lead to him breaking up with her? Immediately after Jason dumped her Melissa got back together with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, in addition to getting her 15 minutes on The Bachelor she picked up $200K for being on DWTS and got a job as a reporter this summer with Good Morning America.

Jason is an ass, but after reading about her engagement I get the feeling that Jason was not long for her as a boyfriend, and that she was using The Bachelor just to get ahead in the world of entertainment.

  1. I didn't watch The Bachelor. Never have, never will. Those dating shows are just used for people to become famous. Here's the proof.

  2. I thought that's what everyone did on these "reality" shows - just used them in order to be on TV. I don't fault her anymore than I fault ANY reality show contestant. Especially the 'mating' shows.

I watch the Bachelor/Bachelorette crapola. It's my life.

  5. Knowing that Jason and Melissa both knew it was a fake relationship would be fine and dandy if the public hadn't given her the sympathy vote.

She got more votes and additional gigs because the public was duped into believing she was jilted.

Jason may be an ass but this proves Melissa is an even bigger ass for conning the public who supported her, unfortunately for all of the wrong reasons.

  6. On another site they said that Melissa and her now-fiance were broken up when she signed up for the bachelor. So on the flip side of the coin, maybe she realized what a nice guy her current fiance was when she got dumped by Jason, and went back with him. Who knows? I've never understood a reality show where 25 women chase after one guy, and he picks one to propose to after what - a couple of dates? If I met a guy and I knew 24 other women were after him, and he was gonna smooch and choose between us, I'd politely step aside and say "ya'll can have him!" But apparently having self-respect does't make very good TV, I guess :)

  11. ia about using the bachelor to get ahead and it worked?! i wouldn't have an issue with her gaining her fame with sympathy if there was something legitimate to feel sympathy for- like if she really was in love with jason. but now she's already engaged to a guy from before- so she never loved jason, the whole thing was a sham on both sides- and she's still famous.

so if there's nothing to feel sympathy for, she shouldn't be famous anymore. she should have waited at least another year before getting engaged to this guy, she could have kept the sympathy card and people would be happy for her.

sorry if that's long or doesn't make any sense, lol. she was playing her cards so well til now!

  13. ... Using the Bachelor to get ahead in the entertainment industry." And she did! I had a feeling all it was planned in advance as a twist to make that god awful show interesting, she wasn't surprised. She got lucky because she got DWTS,I can't remember the two "winners" names and faces but I doubt she's destined for a long career as anything either. She did seize the moment, planned or not and made nothing into something. Good for her, but I hope her long time boyfriend and fiancee has some cash coming in because she appears to be high maintenance as hell.
