Harry Potter Beats The Dark Knight
I really doubt whether Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince will beat The Dark Knight in the overall box office, but at least for one night, Harry Potter did something that not even The Dark Knight could do. There is a new record for midnight screenings now. The latest installment in the Harry Potter movies took in $22.2M from its midnight screenings. That beat The Dark Knight by almost $4M.
To give you an idea of how much $22M is in the scheme of things, consider this. In 2008, movies such as X Files 2, Mad Money, Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Swing Vote, and Rachel Getting Married didn't make that much money in their entire run at the box office. Harry Potter made that much after midnight in one day.
Which means that long after this series ends, Hollywood will force JK to write yet another book.
ReplyDeletemaybe it is because ticket prices go up every few months lol...$11.50 by me...
ReplyDeleteMan, Montana. I instantly flashed on poor JK Rowling tied to a chair on some sad movie lot with shady guys in silk suits standing over her saying "we need a sex scene!"
ReplyDeleteMy mind went another direction, BigMama - JK Rowling, lying in bed with an old fashioned typewriter, while Kathy Bates stands over her with a huge mallet. "I'm your biggest fan - NOW WRITE!"
ReplyDeleteI guess JKR left it open for another book, but it feels nicely wrapped up in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI saw the HP movie at a midnight show and my theater was running it on multiple screens (made it absolute hell when all the theaters emptied at exactly the same time). Did they do that for the Dark Knight?
ReplyDeleteI did not see it at midnight, I'm getting too old I guess, but I did stand in line to see the first showing at 12:00 today...along with my reluctant 13 year old son. My obsession with all things potter thoroughly embarasses my teens...which is incredible fun!
ReplyDeleteOH!! Okay .. this explains what I saw last night!! I went out to dinner last night close to a theatre and a whole slew of kids dressed in a "Potter" theme showed up about 9 PM for dinner.
ReplyDeleteDamn .. I am so out of touch!
Well they're already making the last book into TWO movies, so they're squeezing the lemon already.
ReplyDeletedave, i was thinking the same thing.
ReplyDeleteeither that or i just read the damn book too fast.

ReplyDeleteDammit, I meant to go and totally forgot! What was I doing? Assembling a damn backyard water fountain, Pfffft. :-(
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Harry!
If this beats out The Dark Knight in the overall box office, I'll be pissed.
ReplyDeleteI took yesterday off from work to go see it. I loved it, i'm middle aged and obsessed with HP!
ReplyDeletei love harry. and it was so amazing and sad to watch HBP knowing the ride is coming to an end. i completely agree with ddadmin about this being a great movie to watch. and i can't wait for the imax version to open up here.
ReplyDeletei can tell you for a fact that they do not have jkr tied to a chair or curled up over a typewriter with a mallet to her head.
the reason book 7 is two movies is that there is just too much content to cover. half-blood prince did leave out some major things but still managed to get across much of what is critical to the next story.
Good. I thought "The Dark Knight" sucked donkey balls.
ReplyDeleteMy cable guide gave it 4 stars (which it only does for "Citizen Kane" and "Schindler's List" et al) so I thought it would be good. My husband also hated it.
Apparently, we're the only ones who did, though.
Never got into Harry Potter. Probably will never see this movie.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carla :) you did my explaining for me.
ReplyDeleteJo definitively will not be writing another HP.
I love, love, love Harry and I'd bet that HBP does exceed TDK at the box office. Never underestimated the obsession the potter fans have. I'm seeing it tonight (cannot wait) and I plan on seeing it at the IMAX as well.
It's been getting 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and I know peeps who aren't potter fans that want to see it.
why karmen? the dark knight was good but i never thought it was all that. the books are genuinly amazing and the dark knight is just based off a comic book, not that comic books areent awesome but still. People went waaayyyy overboard for that movie (which i still say had a lot to do with ledger dieing) In my opinion Iron Man was a way better movie genre wise than dark knight, but i digress.
ReplyDeletethat's because the dark knight was crap on a stick and HP was freakin' awesome!
ReplyDeletei agree with both things you say jasmine - dark knight had the draw being the last film of one of its stars (hell..that's why I saw it) AND that iron man was a million times better. that movie just kicked ass in so many different ways - and my crush on RDJ has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT =X
My local theater had 8 midnight screenings, and a couple of 3:15am shows, and they all sold out. Unbelievable.
