Your Turn
We did this topic a few months ago, and it is one of the very few I would bother repeating, just because I think answers change, more people come to the site, and it gets everyone in a damn good mood before the weekend. It is probably my favorite topic to discuss with people other than if you could only have one order of french fries ever for the rest of your life, from where would you order them? That isn't the question today, although you are free to answer it as well.
The reason I specifically brought the topic back is because the last time I spoke to someone about it, they told me that there is such a thing as shame Karaoke. Apparently this is not where failed American Idol contestants go to sing songs by Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, but rather where one gets up in front of a crowd of people and sings those songs that you love so damn much but don't want anyone to know.
For example. I know all of you love Wilson Phillips. Don't deny that. Yeah, you might be the biggest damn Kanye fan in the world or think Metallica is the second coming, but when you hear "Hold On" you turn up the radio. Don't lie.
So, please list all of those secret songs you are afraid to admit you love. Also, feel free to link to YouTube so that everyone can click back and forth all weekend.
Backstreet Boys: I Want It That Way (actually, several Backstreet Boys songs, but that one's probably the most embarrassing)
ReplyDeleteOops I did it again by Britney. I love a lot of Britney songs, actually. "Sometimes" is probably the most embarrassing one of the bunch that I love.
ReplyDelete"Say you'll be there" by the Spice Girls.
And french fries--arby's curly fries. Amazing. Which is why I stay away.
Enty, some of us have no shame button when it comes to singing. I love, love, love Sweet Child of Mine by Gus N Roses.

We don’t have to take our clothes off, Jermaine Stewart
Brandy, Looking Glass
Gypsies Tramps and Thieves, Cher

"Mmmm-bop." The lyrics are actually kind of profound if you listen to them. I usually have to take it down a register or two, however.

Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover, Sophie B. Hawkins
ReplyDeleteand
Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Oooh and Sexy! No No No
I don't have any real guilty pleasure songs, because everyone who knows me knows my taste in music is fairly cracktastic. Most of my favorites are of the serious singer / songwirter or fucked up experimental artsy tracks, but I make no excuses for the Cher, the Clay Aiken, the Britney Spears, the ABBA - if liking a song means someone's going to think less of me, I could care less what they think in general.
ReplyDeleteI am, in fact, more likely to raise eyebrows with the artists I don't like. Tell most people you could care less for Neil Young / Rolling Stones / Nirvana / Elvis Presley and it's like you killed their puppy. :P

I had better stop because I'm beginning to embarass myself! Have a wonderful weekend!
IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOOOWN - DA NA NA NAAAH, DANANANANAAAAAH, DANANANA-NAAAAH, DANANANANANANAAA-NANANAAAA-DANANANANANANA - NAAAAAH NAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
ReplyDeleteI also discovered this morning that I have "Life Goes On" by Poison on my iPod.
Gotta admit, I always turn up Katy Perry's stuff.
ReplyDeleteOk Ok I am finally admitting this out loud:
ReplyDeleteGirl You Know Its True by Milli Vanilli. I even tried to buy this on itunes but couldn't. My God. I should just crawl under my desk and die. But of course, there are more:
I Want It That Way--Backstreet Boys
If You Had My Love--JLo
Shake Your Love--Debbie Gibson
Mo Money Mo Problems--Diddy and the Notorious BIG
In da Club--50 Cent
Right Here Waiting--Richard Marx
Maneater--Hall & Oates
Ok I have a lot more, but I am really embarrassed now!
I'm a huge metal and southern rock fan, known for being a serious rock chick and I have Britney, Christina and Beyonce albums next to Slayer, Corrosion of Conformity and Alice in Chains. I also like Nickelback (very secretly), which is just WRONG!
ReplyDeleteDon Henley's "End of the Innocence"
ReplyDeleteThere, I said it.
Terrance - good call on Framing Hanley's version. I hadn't heard it before but I just went to YouTube and it's awesome. I could do without the minute and a half of b.s. at the beginning though.
ReplyDeleteAs for my guilty pleasure song: "Black Velvet," Alannah Myles.
Yes.
Re-posting with YouTube links.
ReplyDeleteGrumpy's waffle fries with seasoned sour cream. To die for!
I'm going to throw the doors of shame wide open for this one.

"Heartbeat" Don JohnsonHey, at least there's no Celine Dion, I do have some standards.
Almost forgot, "The Pina Colada Song!" BEST SONG EVER!!!!
Oh, and Don Henley's "Boys of Summer." I bought Ray-bans because of that song. I still wear the same pair, with prescription lenses now...

:-)
I dig anything by Air Supply. Pretty much the only cheesy ballads I like.
ReplyDeleteI just downloaded to my iPod.....Rupert Holmes, The Pina Colada song and Never Been To Me by Charlene.
ReplyDeleteMan I cant believe I said that out loud. lol
Haha, I watched the video for "Total Eclipse of the Heart" yesterday for some odd reason and had several "WTF!?" moments. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=840B27zYfOk
Mine would probably be "Tubthumping" - Chumbawumba
All I Have to Give -- Backstreet Boys and most of N'Sync's stuff. 51 today and still listening to boy bands...how embarrasing

Don't Talk To Strangers by Rick Springfield. Saw two of his concerts, one where I was so close I could have walked up and shook his hand. (He was in a dinky auditorium in Audubon, NJ.) I am actually trying tofind that sone for my ringtone..
ReplyDeleteActually, what I am a leetle embarrased to admit is that I am a 46 yr old white woman who loooves hip-hop. And N-Sync.
Oh, and I am pointing and laughing at Jax for Songbird by Anne Murray. But then again, I love Cher's "Love and Understanding"..
ReplyDeleteOh, OH! My WORST guilty pleasure is (don't throw anything) is, um, Britney Spears songs. NOT ALL OF THEM. Just..some of them.
ReplyDelete"I'm a slaaave...for you..."
Also love Hootie and the Blowfish! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with so many of these that have already been listed.
ReplyDeleteHere are some of my current faves:
Fernando by ABBA
Puh-puh-puh-Poker Face by Lady Gaga
I also ALWAYS turn up the volume and sing along at the top of my lungs to that David Cook song...something about leaving the lights on. I know the song itself probably isn't that embarrassing to like, it's just the way I act when I'm singing along.
I forget I love it until I hear it and find myself singing to "Sweet Caroline" and I still have a Schoolgirl Crush on Rick Springfield and love most of his songs (there are many more than you would think). My husband has proved his love to me by getting us 2 tickets to see him at Casino Rama in July. Don't judge me lol
ReplyDeleteKelly-I'm judging you and my judgment is that you're AWESOME! :)
ReplyDeleteThe Sign by Ace of Base
ReplyDeleteMmmm Bop by Hanson
Shiney Shiney by Hayzee Fantayzee
Come Go With Me by Expose'
I fricken love "In the Ayer" by Flo Rida, which is only embarrassing for my kids since I'm 41 and do a little car dancing when it comes on the radio.
You guys know that Rick Springfield is going to be on a few episodes of Californication, basically playing himself, right?
ReplyDeleteGreen Wave Girl:
ReplyDeleteThank you I didn't notice your post until after I posted. I was starting to think I was the only one who would admit to being a fan now there are two of us lol. I have all of his cd's (I know but a friend of mine got them for me) and also really like Don't Talk To Strangers.
Mooshki:
ReplyDeleteNo I didn't know that but thanks. I should get back into watching that show again I only watched the first season but really liked it.
Love Song by Tesla. I am mortified that I love it, but I do. Especially the long instrumental beginning. And I really didn't like Wilson Phillips. They are awful. Just awful.
ReplyDeleteOh, and for french fries: Cedar Point's (it's an amusement park in Sandusky, OH) chili and fries are to die for.
ReplyDeleteCalifornication is filming here on campus (UCLA) as we speak!
ReplyDeleteGWG, you should hook up with Duchovny! ;)
ReplyDeleteHe's cute and all, but I hear he's been around! No thanks! ;)
ReplyDeleteUh, Julie, just checking, but are you ME???
ReplyDeleteI too, love the man Flo-Rida..and hip hop.
Kills me really, because I am so white I'm translucent. I had to go and Urban Dictionary a LOT of phrases!!!
I think that is actually more embarrassing than my aforementioned love of Flo-Rida.
::hangs head in shame::
Even my 12 year old daughter hates her but...i love See You Again by Miley Cyrus. I love to embarrass her by cranking the tunes and singing it when her friends are around. Being a mom is fun!
ReplyDeletePretty much anything by the Carpenters!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU, CATHERINE!
ReplyDeleteanything karen c. sings, i can karaoke. i grew up singing to her, and my range is the same. after a couple of drinks i can still blow the mister away because i can do her dead on.
although when i was younger, julie andrews was my idol, and my dream was performing "my fair lady" (i came thisclose)!
barry manilow, because there's some actual music in there, chicago (oh, "our" song is "your my inspiration"), john denver, hell, anything i can find the harmony to.
my brother taught me a lot, singing wise, and i still go for anything with a good harmony.
the jimmy buffett thing? it's the fantasy in the music. "yes, i am a pirate- 200 years too late..."
I am NOT ashamed! However, I draw the line at boy bands.
ReplyDeleteMariah Carey - I'm in Heaven (with my boyfriend)
Fantasia - Baby Mama
Wham - Wake me Up
Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy (my 8 year old and I improvise or own words)
Hello ENT!!! been a while
ReplyDeleteMcDonald's fries......
as for my embarrassing song?
"Im a Barbie girl, in the Barbie world, life in plastic, its fantastic...."
now shhhh....dont tell anyone, lol.
What?! No Anonymous option tonight?
ReplyDeleteSheesh.
This is embarrassing coming from a Rage Against The Machine girl here in the modern age, but my song would be Bad Company's "Shooting Star" from around 1975, when I was all of 11 years old.
"Don't you know..."
I can sing every word, and I belt it OUT.
"Course, I've never sung it at Karaoke, so who knows if I can sing the damn song or not...
yeah, good times
Ooh, Wham is a good one! :)
ReplyDeleteI have the CD of the Carpenter's Greatest Hits and LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteI also have a fondness for the Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville duets--All My Life and Don't Know Much being my favourites, but anything off the Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soO0CMnU9Bo
I am only somewhat ashamed to admit that I had to play this 2x through so I could sing both parts.
Rock me gently andy kim

Boys town gang, cant take my eyes off you.

ReplyDeletePhotograph by Def Leppard
ReplyDelete(When I saw them perform it live, I thought I was going to have a heart attack)
Wannabe by The Spice Girls
Release Me by Wilson Phillips.
Oh, and In N Out fries animal style. DEEEELICIOUS.
Lyne- Don Henley's End of the Innocense...
ReplyDeleteaaaaaaah you took me back
I LOVE THAT SONG.
I catch worlds of grief at work because I use Pandora and the music I have programmed on my "station" causes a bunch of heads to turn.
ReplyDeleteTo see me, you'd never expect that this 48 year old white redneck from Atlanta can (and usually does) sing along with Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and a number of other artists from the 40's, 50's and 60's.
Of course, the fact that I love to belt out a showtune too just goes to show that while I might have missed out on the hair cutting gene and the decorating gene, I more than made up for it in the showtunes gene.
Caroline and Wil - It's all good. Tesla's Love Song is AWESOME. And Ambrosia, I think I had their songs on my iPod like 5 different times because I kept adding them I liked them so much... :)
ReplyDeleteToo Fun today people. I even found some songs I had forgotten about until reading this.
My favorite is a song called Piano in the Dark. I don't even know who sings it, but I love that song.
"loveFool' by the Cardigans.
ReplyDeleteCan't hit the highnotes?
Have another beverage and try again.

ReplyDeleteLynne,
ReplyDeleteNothing's better than a Don Henley song on the radio in the car on a hot summer day. Turn it up loud. I love The Last Worthless Evening You'll Ever Spend, too.
Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band
ReplyDeleteI think I love you - David Cassidy
Raindrops keep faillin on my head - BJ Thomas
Bebedog, I love that song too. It's probably the one by Brenda Russell, but there's a Nina version too.
ReplyDeleteBad Medicine - Bon Jovi
ReplyDeleteSeparate Ways - Journey
Making Love Out of Nothing at All - Air Supply
Oh yes
ReplyDeleteI love a Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbit
BTW - you guys are embarrassed by the music that I brag that I listen to - John Denver, Neil Diamond, Babs, Carpenters, ABBA, Show Tunes, Def Leppard, B-52s
If they were a secret, the only music I could ever talk about woud be Amy Winehouse and She & Him!!!!!
Well, the 80's are alive and well on my iPod. Not too much shame though. One song that I LOVE that no one else has mentioned yet is T'Pau "Heart and Soul". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJK7dMSd31k
ReplyDeleteDisney songs. Shit from Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan etc. I grew up loving those movies and their songs, and today I am a complete dork and have no shame in still listening to them.
ReplyDeleteAlso I'm a closet Marilyn Manson fan. His first three or four albums are awesome, anyway.
Pretty odd combination, heh.
Mock if you must, but my favorite 80s song is "Make Me Lose Control" by Eric Carmen.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zajTU5h_YGM
And I am never ashamed to karaoke. :)
OK- after MUCH thought, and debating the fact of whether I even have ANY guilty pleasure or even the least bit of bad taste in music, I have concluded the following:
ReplyDeleteMy biggest musical misstep is the purchase of NKOTB's "Face the Music" when I was 16. This was long after they "sucked." I didn't care. I proudly marched into the store and bought the disc and even kept it on my visor for all my friends to see. I had a convertible when I was a teen, and was quite open about playing it whenever I pleased....
Happy Birthday to Cindy!
ReplyDeleteI want this mp3 so badly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlYJHCJo3oo
Adam and The Ants. Brooks and Dunn. Tom Jones. Anyone remember this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1m5ieCWCK8&feature=PlayList&p=0BC1215E8DDE6B99&index=0
If you look on the side, you'll see a few other songs that I have on my iPod.
oh, and to be über shameful - Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. Sad.
ReplyDeleteSo I have a long list of shame.... white girl in Texas driving her Nissan ZX singing to her tunes... with my big ass hair.
ReplyDeleteI love all my cheesy 80's music. Granted I graduated in '85... the height of cheesy. The college graduation was in '89. How I miss the Rock, Rap and R&B of the 80's.
My list of shame....
Your Love ... The Outfield.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpeahgdzYp4&feature=related
Actually any Foreigner... Double vision, Urgent, Hot blooded,Jukebox Hero... all of them.
Good grief now I need to find my can of Aqua Net and tease my hair up....
Sadly I have admit I also love Nickelback. So I blame my love of 80's Rock for making me love Nickelback.
Most of the music I like would be considered shameful - 80's metal, 70's & 80's pop, disco but my main genre is classic & "alternative" rock, so here's my real shame list:
ReplyDeleteLady Gaga - Just Dance
Lady Gaga - Poker Face
Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl
Kanye West - Stronger
Olivia Newton-John - Magic
Kenny Loggins - everything on my iPod
Juice Newton - Angel of the Morning
Aqua - Barbie Girl
Soundtrack to the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Once More With Feeling)
Duffy - Mercy (that one is Enty's fault LOL)

Styx Greatest Hits
Taylor Dayne's Greatest Hits
It Takes Two (someone else mentioned this too I think)
She's a Beauty--The Tubes
Half the stuff on my phone is cringe- worthy. (I've grounded myself actually; no downloading music if I've been drinking.)
ReplyDeleteShaun Cassidy, That's Rock 'N Roll
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbog0CxPWsE
Partridge Family, I Can Feel Your Heartbeat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3fPtMuBtMs
Vanilla Ice, Ice Ice Baby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp-is6S_b_g
A horrible, horrible secret of mine:
ReplyDeleteI LOVE "hot n cold" by Katy Perry. Whenever I discover a new song I like I replay it over and over all day. One time I listened to it on repeat ..12 times. I'm a little worn out on it now, but when I hear it, I will bop along, believe it.
I really wish the anonymous option was up lol.
"Party All the Time" by Eddie Murphy.
ReplyDeleteYeah.
eek.....how embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteBARRY MANILOW!!!!
My mother was a huge fan and the first lyrics I ever learned were to "Copacabana"--I was four. I can recite them to this day...and I'll never forget my little brother, who just couldn't figure the words at the beginning and used to sing:
"At the Copa, oh manna manna"
Oh - songs that make me cry - 3 off the top of my head, all country songs:
ReplyDeleteFlies on the Butter by the Judds and There Goes My Life by Kenny Chesney. Embarrassing when you're at work listening on your iPod when someone asks you a question and you have to blink the tears away.
You Decorated My Life by Kenny Rogers is the third, but I'm not ashamed when I tear up because my uncle always used to sing that song to his nieces and nephews.
I hated Extreme but I always find myself singing along to More than Words when it comes on the radio, urgh so frustrating!
ReplyDeleteJade, don't feel bad. Me, too. LOL.
ReplyDeleteOne more to my list, Fine Young Cannibals, She Drives Me Crazy
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7jG8EWr63k
I am a kid of the nineties, so...
ReplyDeleteEast 17: "Stay Another Day". I admit it.
And I goddamn CRIED when I saw Guns 'n' Roses' "November Rain" music video for the first time (ya, I was 28 years old).
ANY BACKSTREET BOYS SONG
ReplyDeleteThe french fries - from WHITE CASTLES
Anyone else besides me have all these cheesy songs stuck in their head all freaking weekend? You guys all have great bad taste! :)
ReplyDeleteshakey, don't ever feel guilty about liking Adam and the Ants. Be proud! Antmusic forever! :)
ReplyDeleteMooshki, I am slightly embarrassed that I can't stop replaying Jon Secada's "Just Another Day". Wrong, but so right.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yfu9egNOdA
Mooshki, I've been listening to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" all Sunday... AND linking the YouTube link to a couple of friends.
