Lady GaGa Throws Lip Synchers Under A Bus
Whatever you think of Lady GaGa and the persona she has created for herself, at least she recognizes it for what it is. Art. She also says that artists and singers who lip synch are not real singers and promises she will never do that. It is a very big challenge she has set for herself because people will always refer to her vow when the inevitable occurs. Oh, I don't think she would ever do it intentionally. There are however certain television shows that only want lip synched performances. Does she not go on those shows? Does she perform on them and say her promise doesn't count in certain circumstances? Then it becomes wishy-washy and she is always having to defend the promise she made until she screams, pulls out all her hair and asks everyone to call her Sinead.
Anyway, Lady GaGa says, "I would never even think about it. The whole point to me is, if you’re gonna be number one, you better really be f**king number one. If you’re gonna be on top, you better be able to do all those things, because it’s a real privilege to be able to make music everyday, and I get away with a lot.
Andy Warhol says art is what you can get away with, and I get away with a lot with my music and my clothes, and I work really hard so I could truly be a real artist for all my fans. That’s really f**ked up when you lip-synch.”
I think what is kind of interesting about this quote is that the person we see in the pictures and the attitude is all part of the persona she has created. She acknowledges her clothes are crazy. She knows they shock and that is what she wants. Lady GaGa is not dumb. She went to NYU. She has written number one songs for other artists. She knows what she is doing and I appreciate her calling out lip synchers. And just for the record. It is hard to imagine her not lip synching in the picture above.
Lady Gaga should lip-synch. Her live performances are at the Taylor Swift level of suckage.
ReplyDeletehaha oh wow. but I do agree...I don't get all the hype about Taylor Swift. Sure, she's cute, but the live singing...no thanks. In this case, I would rather see Lady Gaga, at least I'd be guaranteed a good lights show.
ReplyDeleteCome on. Every single other thing about her is fake. It's hypocritical of her to pick and choose what counts as "real." It's not like her recordings are her pure voice. Sure, some people lip-synch when they shouldn't. 90% of artists, I'd be pissed if they didn't sing live. But if I'm seeing Britney or the Pussycat Dolls or something, I'm there for the show production, not for their "talent."
ReplyDeleteIt's laughable that someone with such a calculated, manufactured image has the nerve to pass judgment on anyone else.
ditto, mooshki.
ReplyDeleteshe dresses like she does so that she can take
ReplyDeleteattention away from her conventional, boring
music. Art my eye.
i don't care how many degrees she has. she's an attn whore and i want lady googo to go the hell away.
ReplyDeleteLet me preface this by saying, I cannot stand her music, but I have to agree with her on her points.
ReplyDeleteWhat the eff are you doing in music if you don't have the chops to sing live at any given time?
We give Jessica Simpson a lot of stick, but she sings live at least.
Ashlee, not so much, but at least there is some talent to begin with.
There are too many 'artists' out there just trying to make a name or some cash and not enough REAL artists creating and performing music.
Say what you will about Kanye West, but he is a true artist becasue he doesn't care if you like it or not, he has a need to create music like we need to eat and sleep. A true artist creates because he doesn't know how to function any other way.
It's upsetting that lip synching is almost expected and certainly accepted now. I can remember watching the lips of the singers on American Bandstand because they lip synched.
ReplyDeletePoor Mili Vanelli were just ahead of their time.
I get the impression that Lady GaGa's remarks were aimed at someone in particular, and the only lipsynch story I've read lately was Paula Abdul. Which is really unfair to Abdul. She's in her 40's and really shouldn't be expected to be able to reproduce her 3-note range live.
ReplyDeletethen stay off the stage if you can't do what you once did!
ReplyDeletewhy is this any different than any job you or i have? if you can't perform up to standard, seeya!
I have to agree with Gaga. Her particular flavour of music isn't necessarily my thing, but clearly it is appreciated by hoardes of other people or she wouldn't be where she is. That said, I really appreciate her comments because like her or not, you can't deny that she is not only smart, but she does have talent. She is not a product, not in the way that Britney is, for example. Her fashion sense annoys me, but I wouldn't take the 'artist' title away from her because she is clearly always in the state of reinventing herself. Don't know for how long she'll be on top, but at least her way of manipulating the public is by surprising them, not the same old formula garbage we get from all the other so-called singers.
ReplyDeleteAs enty said, the girl is smart, and frankly, she's got a decent voice which still sounds like a decent voice even when she's dancing and whatnot. I'd rather see her do well than most of the others who clearly have only a vague idea of what a singer should be.
Um...How weird? I've seen her lipsynch. Alot! Pot calling the kettle black.

ReplyDeleteSeems that is what so called artsits are doing these days. They create a false/fake image and go with that. Anyone with half a brain realizes this fake chick has put together a fake image which seems to be more of interest than her singing/songs. Would anyone, other than homosexual men who are the main reason she is popular, care about her if she looked normal?
ReplyDeleteYup, guinea. I say the same people who made Madonna popular years ago are responsible for the rash of pop tarts we have today. All that aside, I'd rather listen to Gaga than Britney or those Pussycat people. It's like she's in on the joke at least.
ReplyDeleteI miss grunge.
Just to put it out there - I saw Britney in concert with the Pussycat Dolls, and I was far more impressed with the PCD because they actually sang live...
ReplyDeleteLady Gaga does not have that manufactured of an image. If you look at her old, old interviews and her life story, she always has been a nutjob, however talented. That being said, I love her and her show was definitely one of my top shows ever. She has an honesty about her that is refreshing...
Just heard this, thought some of you might enjoy...

I'm a little confused, maybe a fan of hers can clarify. I saw Lady Gaga on Ellen today, and I would've sworn she started lipsynching after she stopped playing the piano.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she actually went to NYU. My impression from her bio is that she was accepted to NYU's Tisch School but didn't go, instead just started performing and stripping to make a living until her songs started getting picked up by other artists.
ReplyDeleteBlame Vancouver based DJ Flipout, he was the first in N. America to play Poker Face and the rest is history.
ReplyDeletethanks Flipout....thanks.
I actually like her music, but only listen to it on my ipod where I don't have to actually look at her. She is okay as an artist, I just find her videos weird and lame.
ReplyDeleteThat aside, I do applaud her for being different. Just not my cup of tea.
I doubt she will never lip synch, and as for Paula, she was doing more of a dance routine than a vocal one. As a singer (who isn't famous but has performed on stage or for an audience many many times) I can vouch that singing while doing hard core dancing is difficult and you usually sound pretty bad. When Gaga was on Idol she didn't lip synch and you could tell she was out of breath.
If anyone saw No Doubt on Idol last week you know that even running around and singing gives a poor vocal performance. Kudos to Stefani and gaga for keepin it real.
When she was on Leno I found her voice(s) seemed very layered, like multiple tracks going on. I'm sure she was singing live in the mic, and she seemed to make a point of showing she really was singing. She did seem very appreciative of being on the show.
ReplyDeleteIf she wants to throw lip-synchers under a bus, let her. They deserve to be there. I just find it a shame that the guy from Milli Vanilli committed suicide over something that would one day become acceptable.
btw - never saw Mariah Carey as MV. Heard Someday on the radio yesterday. Very soulful voice. At this point, nothing would surprise me.
Moxie, I saw it too. No one can sing and whip their head around like that while "dancing". She was clearly lip-syncing - I was watching closely because I'd literally just read this. She did appear to be singing live while she played the piano, though.
