Howard K Stern Pleads Not Guilty
This morning, Howard K Stern and two doctors charged with providing lots and lots of drugs to Anna Nicole Smith all pleaded not guilty. The Attorney General of California, Jerry Brown says the three charged "epitomize society's reckless handling of toxic prescription drugs." Uh huh. For their part, the three charged said that Brown is doing it for political reasons and that no one told Anna what to do.
I have a problem with this whole charging someone with a crime because they enabled someone. Anna took the drugs on her own. Howard wasn't forcing her to take the pills. She took them on her own. I would feel more comfortable with charging Howard with something related to Anna's son. Did Howard have any part in that? Did Anna? I think there should be a punishment to the doctors for writing so many prescriptions, but all of the charges seem very vague and I think it is going to cost millions of dollars to prosecute the case. Even if they are found guilty, what kind of message is it going to send? Spend the millions of dollars on something which will actually achieve something. If you want to punish them, take away their medical and law licenses.
I just think it is a waste of millions of dollars for something that will have no effect on the way doctors write prescriptions. The ones who are willing to take money will keep doing so. This seems like a big waste of time and money.
I've always felt that the deaths of Anna and her son were way too weird.
ReplyDeleteThe doctors need to be held liable, but she was obtaining prescriptions in multiple names. How much did the doctors know? What did Howard do to assist with the phoney name prescriptions? He has some responsibility in this too.

ReplyDeleteCalifblondy, do you think maybe Howard...y'know, *offed* them both for money? That would be TOO horrific. Or maybe I read too many mystery novels.
ReplyDeleteI walk into a bar blind sloppy drunk and the bartender serves me 10 more drinks, I drive and kill, he would be prosecuted.
ReplyDeleteIs that analogy stretching it as far as an enabler constantly providing the logistics so a constantly stoned out their gourd train wreck had a more than ample supply of drugs on hand.
Had Anna tried to get the drugs without a go between it'd have been much harder to get them I think.
D'oh, I hate it when I use a word more than once like that.
ReplyDeleteI think Howard has his own pill probs. I hate to admit it, but I watched her show and I couldn't believe how screwed up she was and how she treated Howard. Why was it so important for Howard to claim to be the babydaddy? Because she's got big bucks coming her way??? I just thought Daniel's death was way too suspicious.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I also thought her son's death followed by her death were fishy. I always thought Stern was behind their deaths. When a drug abuser is being fed a lot more drugs that is not just enabling, that is murder imo.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that Paula Abdul just came out and said she's had a 12-year painkiller addiction, but no one's looking into exactly how she got those drugs.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how the doctors that knowingly prescribe dozens of prescription pills are any different than your average drug dealer. If drug dealers should be punished, so should they - they are enabling.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what Howard Stern did that makes him culpable, but I do think it's kind of funny to see Jerry Brown talking about reckless drug use.
i agree the biggest problem is the doctors. BUT, she was in no shape to be coordinating all those fake names and prescriptions and making sure she was stocked up. HE was doing that. to me, that's a little worse than enabling. enabling, in my book, means sitting by and watching someone abuse drugs or alcohol and not doing anything to encourage them to seek help or intervene in any way. when you seek it out and provide it to them (which i believe he did) that's another matter altogether.
ReplyDeleteWas Anna in any condition to contact people & get the drugs herself?
ReplyDeleteWeren't some of those drugs prescribed directly to HKS?
Isn't it illegal to give someone else your prescription meds?
they all should be held accountable in some way. it doesn't matter if anna took the meds herself- she obviously had deep psychological issues going on and enabling it- even not advising her to stop- you make yourself accountable. if he was innocent, he would have intervened & distanced himself from her if she refused treatment. no, instead the guy helped her get more meds and played pharmacist. but he's not responsible for any wrong doing, huh?
ReplyDeletei know it's not that cut & dry, but he's slime and it's written all over him. i'm with enty that everyone should at least lose their licenses.
Howard K Stern losing his law license doesn't seem like much of a punishment to me. Does he even use it? If he's executor of ANS's estate, he doesn't really need a law license, does he?
ReplyDeleteI think he had something to do with the son's death - it was way too fishy. As far as Anna Nicole's death goes, I think plenty of mothers who have lost a child would take a self-destructive route. She was a mess before Daniel's death. Stern probably helped, or rather didn't help, but without him some other hanger-on would have helped her get the drugs.
The other reason this is just Jerry Brown wasting money on something that is under federal mandate. Class two narcotics are also call triplicates, because one copy goes to the FDA, one copy to the DEA, and one for the pharmacist, with a carbon copy left in the book at the doctors office. The state has zero to do with these types of prescriptions. If he had a problem he should have reported them to the medical board for abusing prescription privileges , that's why the oversight board was set up. Then they would have prescription writing privileges taken away. Once again Jerry is out for Jerry not we poor over burdened tax payers. Between he and Octopussy the state will be bankrupt before the fourth of July thanks Jer!
ReplyDeleteEveryone should lose their ability to practice medicine ANYWHERE no question.
ReplyDeleteAnna did this to Anna. She had help; no question; but Anna got to where she is because she made choices.
I think HS is a huge slimy blackhole of a person.
You could have one dr. who thinks he is your primary who you go thru your insurance for everything and another who you tell he's your primary and you pay cash for everything. Does either Dr know about the other? Not unless YOU tell them. If you are after heavy duty pain killers(etc) are you likely to tell?
