American Idol - Discuss ***Spoilers***
I managed to make it an entire season of not watching American Idol. I'm pretty pleased with myself. Of course all that pat on the back goodness will come to an end when I am glue to my damn television on Tuesday to watch Tori and Dean launch another season. I know, I know, but I'm addicted to the damn show. I can't help it.
Anyway, as I am sure you know by now, Adam Lambert, the guy who put guy in guyliner failed in his bid to win this year. It seemed a foregone conclusion almost from week one that he was going to win, but America likes to keep it safe. When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter who wins. Sure, this year it was Kris Allen, but it doesn't mean success. Hello Taylor Hicks. Yep, that was your career calling you. The top 4 or 5 finalists usually get record deals and they all get them with the same company that signs the winner. The only real difference is that the winner is guaranteed a contract and the rest have to hold their breath. I'm guessing by the time you read this, Adam will have already exhaled. They are under the same restrictive management deal and will have the same songwriters and everything else. So, no matter who you wanted to win, they both will get their shot at fame and fortune.
Even though I don't watch AI, I have to say this: I met Adam a few years ago when he was performing in The Ten Commandments in LA (with Val Kilmer! Hah!). I had no clue who he was, but was completely BLOWN AWAY by his talent and couldn't believe he wasn't famous already. Afterwards, I went up to him and let him know that I thought he was amazing. I’m so glad he has his chance at fame and fortune now.
ReplyDeleteAmerica got it wrong!
ReplyDeletethey really need to take a look at their voting system. it should be 1 vote per phone number or text per number. i bet Adam has wayyy more fans but Kris had way more tweens voting nonstop.
I don't watch Idol, but I've seen some clips of Adam, and he seems pretty darned awesome. From what I understand, _not_ winning is going to be much better for his career.
ReplyDeleteJax, I agree completely. Not just for fairness, but because my damned fingers get so tired during So You Think You Can Dance season.
ReplyDeleteMooshki - SYTUCD tonight!! I don't really enjoy the first shows of the season. If Sex shows up again...
ReplyDeleteKris needed the win, Adam needed the exposure. They both came out ahead.
I was rooting for Danny... He had a better voice than both Kris and Adam. Between those two, i didn't really care who won because it doesn't matter (think back to Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard- Clay sold more albums even though he "lost"), but I REALLY thought Adam would win. I agree with Jax, most of the teeny-boppers voted for Kris I'm sure. I find him fug and boring as hell, but, whatev.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that America picked the wrong Idol. It should have been Adam. He made that show actually interesting with his singing and showmanship - just wow.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I can see Adam's talent, but I did not like his vocal style (does that make sense?). The few clips I saw definitely made him sound a little hard rock/metal to me, and it's just not my taste.
ReplyDeleteI liked 'em both. I was leaning towards Adam, but I really didn't care who took it in the end. So to speak.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the night was Queen Latifah's performance. I loved the song.
Don't worry about Adam. There are enough of his type in Hollyweird to take good care of him...that is as long as Adam "blows" and "bends" by their rules.
ReplyDeletein this pic, which one is adam? they both look like judy garlands to me.
ReplyDeleteand what fucking type would that be, Guinea?
ReplyDeleteenlighten me.
adam will be fine. kris will be 'kris who' in a year or so. the 13 year old girls got their way.
ReplyDeletei'm done with AI. i just think the judges should have some influence in the outcome---a percentage or something. otherwise, we just get safe and bland every year.
Adam was too much of a one trick pony. Sure, he could hit high notes, usually on key, but too often off, but he did it too many times, there was no nuance, no variety in his style. I don't think either of them was the best singer this year, though they may be the most marketable.
ReplyDeleteMiddle America didn't want "a gay" as "their Idol" just like season 2 (Ruben and Clay). It doesn't matter. He'll do just fine without the "win". This country is so backwards. That kid can really belt it out. I hadn't watched Idol all season long but I heard about him. I watched last night cause there wasn't shit on. Great voice and great stage presence. I see Seacrest is still annoying and Paula is still stoned. Somethings never change.
ReplyDeleteMikey, sadly, they are indeed bringing Sex back. That's why I record it and play back with my finger on the FF button.
ReplyDeleteGuinea, shouldn't you be hanging out at BigotsAreUs.com?
Oh and btw, Adam sounded really good with Queen but when Kris started singing along, it really sucked up the performance. Why do they have them duet? Let them do their own thing.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I wish there was an edit button.
ReplyDeleteGuinea must have had an easier time voting last night than it did for
Season two...."Black guy....gay guy...what am I gonna do????" (Insert your own racial slurs as this is a family type board/sort of)
I agree that both of them will be all right. Even low tiered AI rejects can do the theater thing and tour. Ruben Studdard was recently in Austin doing a one night only performance of Ain't Misbehavin' with Fantasia. From what I've heard, Ruben could have done more with his win if he had been willing to work a little harder.
ReplyDeleteTaylor Hicks was parodied by Weird Al with a song/video called "Do I Creep you Out?"
I didn't watch at all this year either. Yay me! Still knew who Adam Lambert was. He may have been over exposed. Plus, he was hailed as a shoo in. This worked against him in two ways. One, people who might have voted for him figured he had it in the bag so they didn't vigorously vote for him. Second, people probably felt sorry for the other guy and didn't want him to lose by a large margin and be embarrassed. Last year, Seacrest announced that Cook beat Archuleta by a lot of votes.
ReplyDeleteGuinea - if you are going to be a homophobic comedian, can you at least be original (because you sure as hell can't be funny)?
ReplyDeleteOooh Hollywood is full of the gaaaays!!11!1!
Is there going to be a fight behind the school at recess? LOL. :-p
ReplyDeleteENT - I'd love to hear more on what you know about the contract the contestants are bound to. How long are the "losers" bound to 19 Entertainment after the summer tour? For that matter, how long is the winner bound to them?
ReplyDeleteI do agree that it was Middle America that made Kris the winner instead of Adam, but I don't think of Podunk, USA as being anti-gay. They're just anti-different. Anything that's not mainstream will turn off a large sector of the folks in the flyover states.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I do agree that Adam didn't need this win, but Kris probably did.
Kris's best bet for success after the Idol shine has worn off would be to hone his songwriting skills, and find his niche in the same market that keeps Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper on the airwaves.
Mikey, you're right. Kris needed the win; Adam, the exposure. Adam's a huge talent who won't need to 'bend' to anyone or anything. He only needs to be careful that just because he can sing anything, that he doesn't sing 'just anything.' But he has enough experience to know this.
ReplyDeleteWe all know that the US is full of ignorant hicks and that these are the people who vote.
Anyone notice Cowell when Kris was announced? He did not stand & applaud like the other judges. I think he was in shock.
Kris is good but so are millions of others; he just doesn't stand out. I wouldn't pay to see him. Adam, however, I'd pay to see in a NY minute. What a blast if he toured with/fronted KISS and Queen.
