$20,000 For A Kiss On The Cheek?

I think sometimes people go to charity auctions and lose their minds. It is really the only logical explanation. Sure, it is charity, but it also shouldn't take away common sense. If someone came to your house selling cookies for charity and each box was $75 would you buy one just because it was for charity? Hell no, because no one pays $75 for a box of cookies. Unless of course you have been drinking or smoking pot all night and then, in that case $75 might be the going rate.

Last night in Cannes there was a charity auction for amfAR which is a great organization and one of the few that will actually let Sharon Stone be in charge of anything. Anyway, at the auction celebrities were participating and Robert Pattinson decided to auction off a kiss on the cheek. Yep. If you were the high bidder Robert would kiss you on the cheek. And because he is so generous with his time he was willing to offer this prize to two lucky winners.

Well, the two lucky winners each paid $20,000 for a one second kiss on the cheek. Kind of disappointing I think. I mean I understand the $20,000 is going to charity, but again, look at that $75 box of cookies. He probably kissed 100 people on the cheek yesterday for free yesterday while he was in Cannes, so suddenly charging $20,000 for it seems high. How about some lunch or something tangible?

To give you an example, for $60,000 last night you could have had a private screening of Inglorious Basterds for you and a friends plus dinner at Cipriani for all of them as well. Yes, it is expensive, and a truly awful movie, but it is better than a kiss on the cheek from a kid who is probably going to disappear after this whole Twilight thing. I don't think there are too many people out there bragging about the time they paid $20,000 for Corey Haim to kiss them on the cheek.

  1. I'm going to be charitable (see what I did there?) and assume he's too shy/socially awkward to commit to a lunch or whatever with what would, probably, be some crazed over-monied fans. In which case, why even bother?

Though I guess it worked, if they paid up $20,000 for a peck on the cheek...

  3. Last year, I think at the same event hosted by Sharon Stone, someone paid $350,000 to be kissed by George Clooney- but I think that may have included some preventive shots, too.

  5. If they really want to raise money for charity, I think people should auction off entire nights of everything goes with the actor-o'the-moment.

A kiss on the cheek for 20k? Please. Even if I had millions of euros at my disposal I would require some serious full-frontal snogging for $20k.

  6. Lol - there was a time when I would have given my right arm for a kiss on the cheek from Corey Haim. Now? Shudder.

To be fair, I read that Weinstein put him up to auctioning off the kiss; he agreed = charity gets dollas! That's really all that matters.

  9. RPatz was a late stand-in, since someone else dropped out and he was persuaded to do it at the last minute.

$20K though? I agree with you, Christine! -

$20K for a kiss? What about for a bite? You know that's what those crazy Twilight fans REALLY want.

  12. For $20k I'd want more than a kiss. He'd better learn how to breathe through his ears.

  13. LOL, Jax!!! It's okay, we know it's Edward you're lusting over, not R.Patz. Although, if he pretended to be Cullen and did a bite instead of a kiss, I bet the $ would have quadrupled. :)

  15. If I were loaded (monetarily...) and believed in a charity, I'd pay double for a kiss from Daniel Craig on the mouth.

  16. I don't understand this guy's appeal.

  17. He does nothing for me. I wouldn't give him 20 cents.

Now if I had money to burn and Hugh Jackman was involved .....

  18. Well, you could look at this another way.

When my parents went to charity auctions they would predetermine how much they would spend (donate). Then they would bid on all of the "lesser" items that no one else wanted because they weren't "good enough", until they ran out of money. This way the donors of the "lesser" items didn't feel slighted, and my parents had fun acting like fools paying big money for dumb stuff.

Do you think the cheek kiss bidders had the same idea?

  19. @Wipe-out: No. I think a grand for a kiss on the cheek would be more than generous - I think a grand for a peck on the cheek would be big money for something dumb.

Then again, I've never had enough money to attend a charity auction, so what do I know?

  20. I read on several other sites that the AmFar Rob/kiss/auction thing was spontaneous--not something that had been pre-arranged, which explains why it wasn't promoted. Apparently, Harry Weinstein (head of his own film co. and formerly Miramax) was on the mic at the event, and made a joke about how his daughters were crazy for Rob. He then 'put Rob on the spot' by suggesting/wondering what meeting Rob and getting a kiss on the cheek would be worth. Rob graciously agrees, two (I think) uber-rich types pony up.
Which leaves the question, why would Enty write such a nasty article about Rob? What did Rob do?

  21. i keep trying to buy survivor stuff at auction, but it always goes either too high or too fast.
i've also been known to lose an awful lot gambling on slot machines.
i guess if you get caught up in the moment and can afford it.....
besides, it's a tax write off, right?
