Your Turn

I thought we would do something light and fun this week. First of all it has been awhile since I let you plug what you want to plug, whether it be a website, band, charity, garage sale, or a new way to remove grout from your tub. In addition to that though, I would love to know the answer to this question. If you could reach out and touch any person in the entire world, who would it be?

  6. When i was 15, a teacher named Barb Osterberg reached out to me and changed my life. I've looked for her on many occasions and can't find her. I would reach out to her just so I could tell her thank you for caring about me when no one else, including myself, did. She has no idea the impact she had on my life.

  9. My birth mother.
Just so I could find out some things about my genes.
Second choice would be my late sister - just so I could see her again and fill her in on what's happened since she passed and the truth she never knew, that we were both adopted.

  15. Someone I grew up with and went to high school with, recently gave birth to her first children - twin girls. One of whom has been diagnosed with SMA - which has a life expectancy of only 1-2 years. Here is her website and a little about SMA... (OH. And I would like to touch The Edge from U2 ;))

    www.sweetbabyzane.com

SMA is the leading genetic killer of infants. It is a terminal, genetic disease that results in the loss of nerves in the spinal cord and the weakness of the muscles connected with those nerves. SMA impacts the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe and even swallow. The mind and spirit are no different from that of a healthy baby, but the body eventually fails. Typically, babies with SMA Type 1 have a life expectancy between one and two years. They require around-the-clock medical assistance and monitoring.

  16. If by reach out and touch, you mean to meet someone I would never get the chance to meet otherwise, Nelson Mandela, hands down.

If by reach out and touch, you mean someone whose life I could change, I would choose any child with cancer.

As for plugging, nah, nothing to plug. Next month, Penguin is publishing a book by my friend Andy, but I'll plug that when it's available. He's wicked funny, so I'm excited.

  25. Oh Enty, I'm reaching out and touching you right now in my head. (Don't tell FW!)

I'm going to re-plug my old standby, sheldoncomics.com/. Still as funny as ever.

If you need a laugh or some good old fashioned schadenfraude, fmylife.com is my latest fave.

Don't forget to click daily to support animal rescue, ending hunger, breast cancer research, children's health, literacy and the rainforest, and of course, freerice.com (Click on any of the first set of links, and you can get to all the others through tabs at the top of the page.)

  26. I'd touch my abuelo who died many years ago. I miss him so much. He'd love to meet his grandson who should be out and about in 4 months.

The Big Howl by the NRDC to help protect wolves from being massacred. All they need is a signature.

  27. I support the American Heart association. Why? When I was 39 years old, I had a massive heart attack. I was not obese, and have never smoked. I had gone to see my physician and told him I was having intense chest pains. He patted my hand, and told me I was worried about Christmas (it was 2 weeks away) and prescribed anti-depressants.
Hubby drove me to the ER, where the doc repeatedly accused me of using cocaine. I coded right there on the table, and then they finally realized how sick I was.
The main contributor to the heart attack was a rare bone marrow disease I fight to this day. But my point is that doctors do not realize that young women have heart attacks, too. Know the symptoms (I ignored them for days).

    Now, on a lighter note:
I would touch a dearly beloved uncle, who passed away about 10 years ago. He "visited" me while I was so sick. Maybe it was the morphine, who knows?

(Oh and in a touchy feely way, I would so touch Nathan Fillion!)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would choose to touch my baby sister Iris Lily, who died at 7 months old of a combination of Pneumonia and an overdose of medication from a nurse (the prior nurse on shift forgot to write down that she had already administered her medication for the day).
She'd be a beautiful 21 year old young woman if not for that and I bet my parents would probably still be together too (their relationship did not survive her death). My next tattoo will be of a Lily, in honor of her.

  29. Sarah Palin, so I could shake her and ask if she thinks of anyone but herself. Sorry for the politics insert but I'm frustrated in Alaska.

Ok a plug...I am a stand up comedienne. I work under the name Alexis Vaughn. You can find me on facebook. I perform in NYC. Right now I'm on a little break because I'm planning my wedding, but I'm always writing. I'm a dirty comic and I think I'm hilarious!

  31. I would hug the Dalai Lama.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would reach out and touch 3people, and three people only. My husband and 2 boys. The youngest of which is right beside me now. Starting with my husband he changed my life, and in my opinion he literally saved my life. I could never imagine my life without him. Together we had 2 amazing boys who are the light of my life and why i get up every morning. They make me smile, laugh and cry, but most of all they make my battered old heart love and that is so important.

sorry to get all gushy :)

I'd plug our business but most of you guys are in the US and not little ol' Brisbane, Australia.

    Happy Holidays everyone!

  33. Plug: Don't forget about AIDS research. My mother died of AIDS in '94. Support celebrities who work for AIDS related charities, even crazy Sharon Stone.

  34. Reach out and touch: My nephew Jesse. The accident was 2 years ago this month, and I miss him terribly every day.

  35. I would reach out and touch my mom, who died 25 years ago and let her see that she finally has a granddaughter!

As for a plug -- I help raise money for a women's shelter which houses and helps homeless and domestic violence victims. This place helped my daughter and I when we found ourselves homeless and I have been lucky to be able to help them out in the 7 years since then. Check them out, they are one of the few that actually help these women improve their life, no matter what needs improving!

  38. I miss my grandfather, who died when I was 11. I'd love to spend a few more moments with him. There's a few cats and one wonderful dog that I wish I could have a few extra moments with, too.

In the land of the living, I wouldn't mind meeting Bruce Springsteen. I may fancy Daniel Craig but I couldn't think of a thing to say to him.

  39. Wait - does reach out and touch mean help someone? If that is the case, I was looking online today at young children that need adopting in Milwaukee that are older and can't get homes as easily. That breaks my heart.

As for a plug, my band Madame Trash Heap is opening up for Eek a Mouse at the Roxy on May 2nd- it's a pretty big gig - so if you are in LA you should come by. We may not be Reggae but our mostly soul, blues, jazz, funk and rock sounds will make you sweat and shake your thang!

  55. I would touch, hug and talk to my Aunt Peggy, who passed away 10 years ago.

And for the plug: www.eddiesclub.org (please right mouseclick and open the link in a new window.)

Eddie's Club is an all-volunteer run recreation and social program for kids and teens with special needs, which also provides a few hours of respite care for parents. This organization runs on donations and does such good work. My son, Zach, attends Eddie's club.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I want to reach out and touch my friend Chad, who died in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago this July. Me, him, and my best friend Teri were a trio, meeting up when everyone got off of work to smoke and watch Bevis and Butthead.

Teri is now a meth addict, a shooter, and almost every day I pray and plead the blood of Jesus Christ to cover her and make it apparent to everyone that she is a child of God, and I pray that He bind the demons and prevent them from harming her any longer. I like to imagine that Chad is there as her guardian angel, because when he died they were just beginning to explore their feelings for each other.

And here is a plug for giving 10% of your income, whether you want to call it tithe or just your giving allowance, to your church or local charity that is in need. Or donate supplies to your local homeless or animal shelter. This week at Walgreens if you buy a Colgate toothpaste, you get the purchase price back in Register Rewards, which basically makes it free. You use the RR on the next purchase. Get a sack full of toothpaste and donate it. Save your coupons every Sunday, and when some store runs Suave shampoo for $1.00, you could possibly do what I did and get 24 bottles for $5.75 plus tax. These are going to our church, they make Crisis Care Kit boxes and distribute them to the needy. Your local animal shelter would also love to receive a box of shampoo for the critters.

Be well everyone, and Happy Passover/Easter/Chocolate Coma time.

    Hershey's Coconut Kisses FTW.

  57. Plugging? Well, my local animal shelter, the Humane Society of the Nature Coast is in the top 10 finals for a $1 million makeover offered by Zootoo.com, which is a social networking site for pet lovers. Vote for them? Voting opens Monday and runs to next Sunday...

I would want to see my parents. Sorry, can't split them up :)

  58. If I could meet anyone, it would be a woman named Karen Anderson. She is/was a wife and mom from Washington State who gave birth to the one of the first living sets of Quintuplets (5 babies). They were born in April 1973, two months before I was. She wrote a book about it called "Full House", and I have read that book a few hundred times!!! Not kidding.
I would have given anything to have her as my mom!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. My grandpa who passed away two years ago...and on a more selfish note I'd love to touch Josh Brolin.

As for plug I do a movie podcast that I think is hella cool. You can visit us at midnightmatineepodcast.com

  60. I would like to reach out and touch the Oracle of Delphi and ask WHY I continue to dally with men who constantly hurt me just for the sake of HURTING me when I do NOTHING wrong (yes, this is my pity party).

For once, I actually have something important to plug : )

CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) is a local domestic violence shelter, community support/advocacy group, abuse survivor support group, etc. They do so many things it's hard to put it in one sentence. They are considered one of the best in the Tampa Bay area, but are tiny and have a very limited budget. I went to them about six months ago when I started realizing I was in an abusive situation and my lawyer has asked me to go back now that my soon-to-be-ex is stalking and harrassing me as the divorce date is coming closer. I can't believe how many people this center has helped - I just reconnected with a friend from high school who is going to one of their support groups on a different night. Unfortunately, abuse seems to be rampant everywhere I look anymore.

    Anyway, here's their site:

  61. Something I've always wanted to do - be a foster parent through a reputable foster parent plan. Considering some weeks I can't make my paycheque stretch until the next payday, it's not really feasible for me right now. Not sure if the husband would be on board with it because I've never brought it up. It would be nice to help take care of another child, even if he or she is halfway across the world. I would really feel like I'm contributing somehow.

I'm a beginner blogger, and update irregularly. It's mostly about me. http://monkeynolikeclean.blogspot.com/

And I must say chocolate-flavoured Chex Mix makes it impossible to lose weight. I feel bloated just thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. usually this time of year, enty lets me post a kindness on the site for the people of "MAKEMINECHOCOLATE.ORG"
they try to encourage people to buy CHOCOLATE bunnies instead of furry ones, that bunnies are not toys, and that they take a lot of work and care.

also, if you MUST have a bunny, be sure your children are at LEAST 8-9 years old, that you have 4-6 hours a day (and the space, rabbit-proofed) for your rabbit to run. all rabbits MUST be spayed/neutered by a vet who specializes in exotics or rabbits specifically. and they need a companion. often bonding two rabbits can take ages.
AND PLEASE ADOPT FROM A SHELTER!!!
contact your local chapter of the house rabbit rescue society WWW.RABBIT.ORG (or google them to find your local chapter) and there are also other rabbit shelters.
you can also volunteer to foster or sponsor a rabbit at a shelter.
remember, they can live as long as a dog or cat, and are just as smart. they can be box trained, and require just as much love and attention. i have 7, and 4 are disabled in one way or another. but they all have so much love to give, i wouldn't trade one of them.
biggest mistake people make is buying that cute tiny bunny at the pet store for little johnny or susie. johnny and susie are too young. bunny reaches maturity, starts to mark territory, maybe nips susie's finger. chews through daddy's computer cable. bunny gets "set free" to live with the wild bunnies.
nope. even if the wild buns accept easter bunny as friend, easter bunny will die of starvation. also, domestic buns can't breed with wild buns. the shelters are over full and underfunded, understaffed.
so, please, please, think twice, sleep on it, and think some more. contact me on facebook if you have any questions.

who i would like to touch? just for a few minutes, i would like to sit with my MIL and FIL, passed 2-12 yrs and 1 yr, respectively. to see them healthy and hear them laugh, and tell them about the impending grandbaby. great-grandbaby. sit on the beach in napili, watch the sunset, and have a happy goodbye this time.
