William Hurt Apologizes To Marlee Matlin
As you will recall earlier this week, Marlee Matlin started doing interviews about what is in her new book and she didn't hold anything back. Whether it was the teacher who took her virginity while she was in high school or being molested as a child, it is all in there. Then of course there are the drugs, the lots and lots of drugs actually, and the years of abuse at the hands of William Hurt. The pain is still so intense to her that later this week she said that she is still so scared of him that if he showed up in a room where she is right now that she would run as fast as she could to the nearest bathroom.
All week I kept expecting William Hurt or his people, or someone to at least make the effort in saying the stories were exaggerated or something. While everyone knows the stories are true, they are not exactly common knowledge and so I kept expecting some attempt at damage control by the a-hole. But nope. Instead, yesterday he released a statement that was very short.
"I did and so apologize for any pain I caused."
He did what? She said a whole lot of stuff? I'm assuming he means the beatings, but it really isn't clear from the statement. He could just be apologizing for subjecting us to a string of really whiny movies back in the 80's. Not, the movies themselves really, but just him. It is that look with his eyes that just makes me not like him. He always looks pained. Guess he perfected it by looking at his ex wives and girlfriends after he beat them.
Probably too little too late, but at least he didn't issue a denial.
ReplyDeleteAt the very least I can respect him for being man enough to own up to what he did. Too many of these celebrity bastards deny deny deny when they're guilty as sin.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteToo bad Chris Brown didn't do the same thing.
short and too the point.
ReplyDeleteLike Chris Brown - a half assed apology that doesn't admit to anything (and therefore no legal ramifications).
ReplyDeleteNeither are sorry, they just regret being caught (and are made to look contrite by their people).
Pathetic men, being pathetic.

ReplyDeletewhat an douche and what a back-handed "apology".
ReplyDeletewth is "any" pain he caused?! that's bs. a real apology from someone truly sorry would read "all", not "any". "any" implies he may or may have not caused pain.
man up, asshole.
albeit, we can never know what's truly in a person's heart, whether they are sincere or not. it seems to me that he is not denying any of her allegations.
ReplyDeleteAsking a woman beater to man up is pointless. If they were men, they wouldn't beat women.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I am surprised that he didn't deny it and at least admitted something that makes him look really horrible. I hope it helps her to feel better.
He means that he did apologize before this most recent statement and continues to be apologetic.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he is seeing a psychiatrist for his issues.
ReplyDeleteYou have to give him credit for not denying anything, however he is still a jerk for even laying a hand on her.
ReplyDeleteEnt doesn't seem to be so forgiving or accepting of this lame apology. Thanks for standing up to a bully, Ent.
ReplyDeleteYes, J-Mo. And the admission is implied.
ReplyDeleteAt the time they split, it WAS common knowledge that he was an abuser and an alcoholic. He was A+ list and his career took a nose dive after that. People didn't want to work with him and they still don't. He's one of the many dark ugly people that, work-wise, over the years have been ignored, dismissed, forgotten by the industry. It's how they're punished.
William Hurt doesn't like to talk about his private life, but in the past he has owned up to his foibles, most notably his former drug addiction.
ReplyDeleteJudi, you can say his career went downhill but he works on at least two films a year and has worked consistently since the 1980s. He was in a little bitty film called "The Incredible Hulk" a couple of years ago, is that an example of how you think he was "forgotten by the industry"?
He is an incredibly talented actor and is as imperfect as any of us are. Tell me if anyone can find this kind of behavior in him after the 1980s when he was doing coke. His demon was coke and I think you'll see that he is much better behaved after he kicked it. As I said before, if he were so evil, then do you think he would have been able to raise his two sons?
But I know it's fashionable to hate William Hurt. So go ahead and hate him for what he did two decades ago if it makes you feel better. Looks like he's moved on. (Marlee ought to as well.)
i don't hate him, but i certainly would never date him. he's a dick, but whatever. he didn't deny, and i think he would have been damned no matter what he said, so good for him for at least going with admission.
ReplyDeletebut for god sake, never date the bastard. rent his movies, or watch them online for free. his only relevance in my life is as an actor on screen.
