Jessica Lange And Drew Barrymore Fight Over Awards
Apparently everyone thinks HBO is going to clean up at Emmy time with Grey Gardens which stars Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. The one tiny problem HBO had was convincing Jessica Lange to nominate herself for Supporting Actress rather than Actress. She didn't want to do it. I don't blame her. If someone is on screen the same amount of time, why should she throw herself into a category she doesn't want to be in just to please HBO and give Drew Barrymore a chance to win an Emmy.
For their part, HBO had this to say to Page Six, "Both performances have been widely praised and critically acclaimed. We are thrilled with the reception that 'Grey Gardens' has received. HBO would never presume to dictate which category an actor chooses for award submissions. We do engage in a dialogue with actors and filmmakers to facilitate the process, but the actor's decision is always final."
Yeah, Jessica's decision was final, but you can tell from the statement that they wanted to avoid any drama and to have the chance for each to go home a winner so they could claim it in advertising or whatever. Everyone thinks that Drew will win the Emmy for best actress, but Jessica Lange has won two Academy Awards so you just never know.
What?! Are you saying the criteria for decisions about an awards show might not be based purely on talent? THE HORROR!!! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyone who thinks that Jessica Lange should EVER take a backseat to Drew Barrymore needs their head examined. Yeah Drew, I mean you too.
ReplyDeleteThe movie was ok but I don't see it as award-worthy for either. Drew did a horrible job with the accent IMHO
ReplyDeleteThis does sound awfully familiar... anyone remember the fallout from "All About Eve" at the Oscars?
ReplyDeleteAnne Baxter and Bette Davis were both up for the Best Actress award - along with Gloria Swanson for "Sunset Boulevard" and Judy Holliday for "Born Yesterday".
With such a field, the award went to Judy Holliday.
What they are saying is that Drew seems to be a shoe-in for an Academy Award and they don't want them to compete, so that they both have a chance, they have different category. I get it.
ReplyDeleteI've got this on the DVR, but haven't had time to watch it yet.
ReplyDeleteJamie's Girl - with all due respect this isn't about making sure they don't run against each
ReplyDeleteother it's about the proper talent being recognized and if it's both of them so be it. And if it is about each of them being in a different category so they can both win then Drew can go into the Best Supporting category. Her body of work just does not compare to Ms. Lange's.
Jessica Lange was the go-to actress for serious roles back in her day. I like Drew, but she could learn a lot from Jessica.
ReplyDeleteI watched just part of Grey Gardens the other night and I though Jessica Lange was fantastic in it. Drew Barrymore is good in it, and it's really a departure from the kind of roles she usually does. But she just isn't that great of an actress. However, i don't think we've seen the last of her doing serious roles. She has potential.
ReplyDeletebut this isn't based on Jessica's body of work, it's based on THIS work.
ReplyDeletesaw both in it and sorry, Jessica doesn't stand a chance.
Saw it and was totally underwhelmed and disappointed with the whole thing. If we're being honest, Jessica was much better than Drew, but everyone's freaking out over Drew probably because she finally gained control over his 6-year-old-girl lisp. BFD.
ReplyDeleteDrew Barrymore is a shitty actress and a complete fug. If she didn't have that last name and producorial influence, she's be serving dipcones at Dairy Queen and flashing her tits at anyone with exact change.
ReplyDelete"she'd be serving dipcones"
ReplyDeleteThat's it, I'm going to Dairy Queen for a waffle cone cup sundae after work.
ReplyDeleteBAD movie. Drew's frightful overacting is right up there with Jim Carey. If I cared enough, I would have been embarassed for her.
ReplyDeleteI also thought Jessica Lange had the better performance in the HBO movie. Her aging the 40 years looked great.
ReplyDeleteI like Drew... but bless her heart she is not that great of dramatic actress. She should look at that nomination of best supporting actress more closely. Jessica had the better role and played a much better character.
What would be a hoot... Jeanne Triplehorn gets the nomination for her Jackie role (supporting actress)... and wins!
I like Drew a lot. Her lisp always seemed more endearing than annoying to me. She has good comedic timing. I think the more dramatic roles she takes, the more she will improve.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Ms Lange had a far superior performance and should be the one up for best actress. She knows how to hold our attention and really slipped right into that character.
Personally, I did not think the script was all that great but they did what they could.
Oh and BTW- the real Little Edie had a gawd awful accent! lol.
ReplyDeleteDrew can't act. Jessica should win for Bets Actress.
ReplyDeleteSorry - Best Actress.
