Hugh Jackman Talks About Gay Rumors

That headline doesn't sound quite right. I'm not sure rumors can be gay or straight. Notice I'm spelling it Rumor, and not Rumer, because obviously, Rumer is a person and a Rumor is a thought. Rumer is probably gay or straight. I mean she could be bi I guess. Oh, or asexual. Anyway, Hugh Jackman gave an interview to Parade Magazine and he confused the hell out of me when he was asked about the rumors that he is gay.

"I’d be happy to go and deny it, because I’m not [gay]. But, by denying it, I’m saying there is something shameful about it, and there isn’t anything shameful."

How is it saying that being gay is shameful if you deny you are gay. If I tell someone I'm not gay, how does that answer in any possible way say that you think it is shameful to be gay. It is a yes or no answer.

It is no different than asking are you the color blue? If you say no, is there something shameful about not being the color blue?

I can't believe he didn't try and clarify his remarks, because they are very confusing.

He also said the only place anyone cares whether he is gay is here in the US.

"The questions about sexuality I find more here in America than anywhere else, because it’s a big hang-up and defines what people think about themselves and others. It’s not a big issue in Australia."

  1. I think he means that by denying it, instead of saying who cares he's giving into the people that won't like him anymore UNLESS he denies it. Hence, all the closeted actors the deny, deny, deny they are gay instead of admitting what they are. It takes more guts to say I may or may not be - it's none of your business when you are really straight. No one boycotts people or wants to kill them because they are straight.

However, I would note for the record, that he did deny it anyway.

  2. Would a straight "hunky A-lister" be married to that block of ice he calls his wife? I think not.

  3. What Kara said. And LOL at the Rumer bit.

  4. I get what he's saying, though. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

People here do have too many hangups about an actor's sexual orientation. If an actor shows up on time, acts professionally and brings in box office cash, who cares?

  5. I agree with Enty. If someone calls you something you're not there's nothing shameful about denying it. It only becomes shameful if you are what they say you are and you deny it.

  6. Being gay isn't a big deal in Australia?

Has he ever seen Priscilla Queen of the Desert?

The gay bashing shown in the film is just as bad there as it is in the US.

  7. Um, I think its been a while since Hugh has been in Australia... there was a massive fuss recently about a lesbian kiss in a soap, homophobes jumping up and down with their "But what about the children?" rubbish. Sadly we are as arse-backwards about equal rights for all as the rest of the world...

    And lay off Deborra-Lee!

  8. Lainey 'revealed' Hugh to be the first part of this blind (the part i'm pasting):
Two different megastars, two different preferences, but in the end, the act is the same.

The first is a happy father, settled down and reformed, bankable and respected at the same time… a major player. Which is why it’s so important that he keeps his Cuban male lover hidden away to be enjoyed when he’s not on location. It might seem risqué, having his secret stashed so close to home and his official partner, but he’s hot and horny, and it’s not like he’s not living in a freestyling environment, although I have to tell you, this one really, really surprised me. He plays it so well. And in the end, if it wasn’t such a fraud, it totally wouldn’t matter. He is the nicest, nicest person. Kind and considerate and generous… makes me sad he’s forced to live a lie.

If this is correct, it makes sense that he is being confusing about this issue - i guess he doesn't want to lie anymore than he has to, but can't tell the truth either.
I hate Hollywood for pressuring people into being who they are not (and a lot of the time it's gay people in the industry that are telling their actors to stay in the closet. Ridiculous...)

I wish people would give a big fat WHO CARES to the entertainment industry.

amazonblue - I love that film, Guy Pearce doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

  9. yep, it think he's gay too, and the studio heads would cut off his balls if he came out. he shouldn't protest too much about it.

i wonder if he came out, if the MAJORITY of his massive female fan base would stop $upporting him?

  10. he's tall.
    He's a man.
    He's white.
    He has brown hair.
    he's an actor.
    He's a father.

yet we still only care if he's gay?
i personally don't care either way, he's an actor I will never meet, not a man i'm marrying.

The only one I want yanked out of the closet is Tommy, and that' s only because of his outright lies and fuckery.

  12. I don't know if he's gay or not, but in my opinion, it's crossing the line to ask married celebrities if they're gay. I'm sure there are PLENTY of gay, married (to the opposite sex) people, but to flat-out ask a married person if he's gay is the same as saying, "Is your whole life a lie?". If I was Hugh Jackman's wife, I would be pretty upset by it.

And YES, if he IS gay, his wife might very well know it, but still, what a rude question to ask.

  13. I like an actor for his acting ability not his sexual preference. It has been a long time since the Rock Hudson and Richard Chamberlain days you would think we would be more evolved by now.

  16. I don't give a rip if he's gay. I saw his "assistant" (who was a supposed bf) sitting next to his wife at the Tony Awards so if she's okay with it, that's all that matters.

What does it matter if you are straight, gay, bi, or whatever. It's your life.

  19. I think Hugh's comment is almost akin to the principle behind that Joan Allen movie The Contender. She would not deny the sexual improprieties because that would have given substance and sanction to the right to even ask about it.

  20. Some of my coworkers and I were discussing this during lunch. I told them I don't give a Frenchman's fuck if he's gay, in all my fantasies, he's straight. :)

  21. Gaydar goes off when I see him. He's also fond of parts or musicals that have a gay bent. Does that make him a bad person? No. He's a wonderful actor and seems to be a straight up guy. But let's be honest. Hollywood is full of closeted homosexuals. ANd those that have come out tend to see their stock fall. Just goes to show you just how hypocritical Hollyweird is. They claim to embrace the gay lifestyle but if it will hurt your ability to sell tickets then you better keep yourself in the closet. At least he's not one of those really messed up homos that go seek protection with Scientology.

minorthreat - I wouldn't call one role being "fond of parts .. with a gay bent".

I think the reason he has to answer it is that if he doesn't, people will keep asking. The second part of his statement is saying he's not homophobic.

  23. gay or bi or straight,i don't care! he's a good actor and sexy! and his associate partner lives in his garden!

  24. No matter what he says people will keep saying it. Enty, he said, "I’d be happy to go and deny it,..." The rest is clarifying that. Not confusing to me.
The press now is far from 'proper,' unfortunately. They ask the most intrusive things to hopefully get a rise or an extreme reaction from the interviewee and then the interview itself becomes the story, and people will be sure to buy the mag/watch the show. It's all about getting the sponsors' ads viewed. This is more important now than the actual content of the medium. I just hate it.
    Okay, rant over. :-D

  25. Judi, I applaud you.

And all my gay friends say he ain't gay! (though a few of them would like him to be)

  26. Cheers, K. Thanks. Yeah, the gay community know exactly who is and who isn't. Nothing to do with gaydar - they hear everything and can corroborate with two phone calls.

I'm not in the US so can't comment about the hang-ups there but I suppose it kinda falls into the dishonest category - for me - as you're hiding the truth. Whether his wife is a beard, there are kids involved and I can't imagine it's easy.

Why Hollywood still insists on closeting or marketing certain personalities as straight and single? TC is the most obvious example but we are in the 21st century after all, can we not act like it?

  30. The man is gorgeous, sexy, charming and from all accounts NICE. He is not a douche with a star complex.

I don't care who he sleeps with as long as the person is of age and it's cosensual.

If he does prefer men that doesn't make me like him less. I still would think for once PEOPLE got it right. He is the sexiest man alive.

  31. The nice thing about celebs of ambiguous sexuality is that more of us get to fantasize about hooking up with them someday. :)

  32. I expect that he's gay; his wife Deborra-Lee Furness was a lesbian icon when she made the film Shame quite a few years ago. But, as has been said, if they're fully aware of each other's choices and happy together, it's no big deal. There's always something unfortunate about a marriage of convenience, but it's hardly the only one we know of.

  33. My father worked on the TV production that he met his wife on. It was one of his first roles (early 90's) and I recall him saying they were seeing one another.

And regarding Goodgrief's comment. I meet Deborah-Lee last year (she came into a store I managed) and she is anything but a block of ice! She was funny and great to chat to, Really lovely lady.

  35. ive always thought he was gay, and never really like a single one of his movies either -- ever since Swordfish ... he actually causes me not to want to watch movies most times ... i guess the magic one was good (illusionist?)

So...it's okay to use marriage down thru the ages as a total sham and a cover for your gayness because everyone that gets married does it for like, the RIGHT genuine and honest reasons!

But not okay to ask if a person's gay or bi or suspect they're usig marriage as a cover because...oooh they're celebs and "nic" so we can't go there!

    Urm, ooookay.

Regarding Hugh: the lady carries on protesting don't he?

Why doesn't he just move on if it's not an issue? These interviews always have a publicist sat in so if anything's asked they don't want asking they get told to avoid certain questions, but good ol' Hugh keeps bringing it back up. Why?

If he's not gay why would he bother about what people tattle about? It would never touch or concern him. He'd just laugh it off. But he keeps harking back to it every interview.

Something you need to get off your chest, Hugh?

Something you need to unlock from the closet maybe?

    He's hopeless.

  37. So what people are thinking is that he is in a marriage of convenience, designed early in the piece to help him establish his career. Just like in the old days when male actors were encouraged to marry women to avoid any criticism. I think Hugh could very well be gay (just a feeling), but I also think his wife looks like his mother. I also think Travolta is gay, and I wonder why Kelly Preston doesnt think she could do better. Why would a woman stay with a gay man? Life is too short for living lies.
