I hesitate to think of AC as closeted, though because I don't think he's ever denied it. He said somewhere that he likes to keep his private life private because of the way he observed his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt's open way with the press.
Whenever a celebrity outs themselves to the public, there's the whole media interview/sit down thing, and I just think he wants to avoid that hoopla. It's not like he's hiding behind any beards. I respect that.
I wouldn't call Anderson Cooper closeted. While he doesn't like to discuss his sexuality and has made no announcments about being gay, he doesn't hide it either. I once saw him on Larry King. King asked him about some guy he had worked with and Cooper said that he had actually dated the guy for awhile and that now they're just friends. So I wouldn't call that in the closet.
I think most people here aren't paying enough attention to the word "icon." The people jokingly offering up Andy Rooney and Larry King would seem to be warmer as they're naming people who are something close to real ICONS.
To me, a TV icon issomeone like Alex Trebek, who's been on TV seemingly since it was invented, or nearly anyone from "60 Minutes." Can no one name a true icon?
I'm going with any "Sesame Street" character. Or Bart Simpson; he's yellow.
I think that BinkyM and Pookie are on the right track in that the word 'icon' is definitely someone who is revered in the TV industry. Lorne Michaels would be a good guess as would Regis Philbin (jokingly). Definitely someone of that nature. However, someone brought up the 'gentleman caller' comment ... is this person Southern? British?
Ooooh! Merv Griffin is a TV icon if ever there was one! Way to use your brain, Linda! Now does Merv Griffin have offices in New York? Does anyone know?
Uh oh! Merv Griffin died in August 2007. He'd provide dusty showers, not wet ones. I completely forgot about that. (And so, apparently, did Linda!) Our bad!
Seacrest or Anderson Cooper.

ReplyDeletePlease god, not Anderson. I'm saying Seacrest as default.
ReplyDeleteWould anyone really consider Anderson Cooper to be "closeted"?
ReplyDeleteAnother "watersports" blind??? Regis Philbin(just kidding) I actually thought of Anderson Cooper, just not sure if he would be considered an icon.
ReplyDeleteI hope it isn't Anderson Cooper and even if it is we don't need to know it. He seems to be a pretty nice person and deserving of his privacy.
ReplyDeleteSo if it's him in this case it would be TMI for me.
ChristyC I was thinking the same thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm going with Ryan Semencrust.
If I were a gay man, I can't imagine being grossed out by anything AC did. ;) I vote Seacrest.
ReplyDeleteSimon Cowell
ReplyDelete"gentleman callers" - sounds British to me
I would love for it to be Bill O'Reilly!! ;)
ReplyDeleteAlas, my gut says Anderson Cooper. He may not be closeted to his friends, but he has not come out professionally.

tv icon? lorne michaels (producer & ceator of SNL). plus, he's based in ny, and this is a ny BI.
ReplyDeleteAudrey-I love the Bill O'Reilley guess haha. That would make my year. Can't stand the guy.

ReplyDeleteI was thinking icon meaning someone like Dick Clark
ReplyDeleteAndy Rooney.
ReplyDeleteNo seriously, what about Shephard Smith? Maybe not an icon in the true sense of the word, but...
Larry King
ReplyDeleteRush Limbaugh? lol

ReplyDeleteWhen I hear Gentleman Caller, I think "The Glass Menagerie." Drawing a blank here, though -- Tennessee Wms, Jim O'Conner -- I got nothing.
ReplyDeleteCOOP MAY NOT SHOUT IT....BUT HE REALLY DOESN'T HIDE IT....
ReplyDeleteAlec Baldwin?
ReplyDeleteHank Hill
ReplyDeleteAnderson Cooper apparently has a steady boyfriend, which may excuse him from the "steady stream" (har har) of gentlemen callers.
ReplyDeleteJerry Seinfeld?
I know he's married, but who knows...
ReplyDeleteLarry Hagman
JR Ewing is definitely an icon, and southern, if "gentleman callers" is a clue about that.
Merv Griffin
ReplyDeleteForgive my ignorance, but what the heck is "watersports" and why would people be grossed out, is it the golden showers regime'?
ReplyDeleteSis, yes.
ReplyDeleteOoooh! Merv Griffin is a TV icon if ever there was one! Way to use your brain, Linda! Now does Merv Griffin have offices in New York? Does anyone know?
ReplyDeletemerv griffin would be good if he was alive.
ReplyDeleteUh oh! Merv Griffin died in August 2007. He'd provide dusty showers, not wet ones. I completely forgot about that. (And so, apparently, did Linda!) Our bad!
ReplyDeleteIcon = Idol, as is American?
ReplyDeleteAnderson-shut off the 'steady stream' and settle down, man!!
ReplyDeleteI threw this out at my husband - his comment was William Shatner. hehe - its good for a laugh anyway.
ReplyDeleteWillard Scott
ReplyDeleteTo me, gentleman callers denotes someone who is older. I give you ... Tom Brokaw.
