This Twlight Thing Is Going To Be Big

If what happened in San Francisco yesterday is any indication, I would say that Twilight is going to open to some pretty big box office numbers. Hell, even if what happened didn't happen I would think it was going to be big. I will also say I don't know how in the hell they will ever make a second one based on that book because 300 pages of moping doesn't exactly translate well to the big screen. There isn't a spoiler there, so don't complain. I didn't say who was moping or why, just that it got really damn annoying.

Anyway, yesterday in San Francisco, Robert Pattinson who plays Edward in Twilight was supposed to do a little meet and greet and signing at a Hot Tropic store. Organizers expected about 500 people. Instead they got many, many thousands of people all wanting a piece of Robert. They started arriving at 10am for an evening signing. Soon there were at least 4,000 people and this was still 6 hours before the signing. When the mad crush of people started and injuries started happening, the organizers called off the event and sent people home. A signing at a Hot Tropic store? That seems like a strange place. Luckily the most serious injuries were girl with a broken nose and another fainted. Yeah, probably watching her friend getting her nose broken.

  2. Could someone es-plane to me what the hell Twilight is? I thought it was a series on Fox, for God's sake!

Oy - I'm getting old. Enty, one Geritol cocktail please. Heavy on the vodka.

  3. Methinks you mean a Hot Topic store, the clothing brand of choice for the tween Goth set. That makes the setting of the vampire signing less of a strange choice.

  4. On a related noted, does anyone watch True Blood? LOVE IT...

  5. Teenage vampires. What an original idea. I'm surprised no one ever thought of that before.

  6. I never read any of this crap but have heard people going ape shit over it. Is it THAT damn great? Add me to the list of "I must be getting old" people.

I've heard a lot of people are diggin' on True Blood. I'm not that into vampire stuff. Is there any appeal beyond that?

Oh, Ent, I can't believe you read those books. Shame shame shame on you! (And again, you sure you're a guy?)

mngoddess - I think you're thinking of Moonlight which was cancelled by CBS last year. Only thing related was a foreign born actor playing an American vampire.

True Blood is awesome and has similar characters to Twilight (telepathic lead girl falls in love with vampire boy whose thoughts she can't hear).

From what I recall, the Sookie Stackhouse books were from before Twilight was written.

True Blood is very good in my opinion. Just sad that the series is almost over. I think their are 2 left for the season finale.

Regarding Twilight I bought the book to see what all the commotion was about. The book is a disappointment since it is annoying between the main characters (can't remember the characters name). Anyway their are like 3 or 4 more books since it's a series. #1 book was enough not to read the rest of the series. It is a very clean story no True Blood here LOL. This is a kids book (Twilight) not for adults.

  9. Twilight came after Harry Potter, and found a generation looking for their next series read. The writting is lame, but the story is compelling. Definitely a kids book, but I enjoyed reading it with my daughter after I got over the fact that it was a very 1 dimensional book filled with whiny characters. I can totally see how the tweeners are loving it...romantic longing..."nobody understands me...magic..

Dream come true for the hormonal crowd!

  12. My daughters planned to go to this event. We had spoken to the store employees on Sunday who told us that they were handing out two wristbands with the purchase of a $30 Twilight t-shirt-one purchase per customer. The store was only going to give out 500 wristbands for the autograph session that was to last between 6-8pm. At 8pm a Q&A session was to start lasting an hour.

My daughters were there yesterday. People actually started lining up at 1am. My daughters arrived before 7am. People came from all over the state, Arizona and Hawaii. Also, some schools did not have class because of Veteran's Day holiday observance.

People were pushing and shoving at the mall entrance. The mall only provided 4 mall security guards to contain a crowd of thousands of screaming fan girls.

A girl did faint and another girl did get her nose broken in the mad rush to get to the front of the line. There were some other skirmishes between the fans.

The police arrived on the scene. They told everyone to leave. They said the event had been canceled. The police also arrested some people based on what my daughters observed.

My daughters, who were raised in a law enforcement family, listened to the SFPD, returned to their car and drove home. They believed the event had been canceled.

Even though Hot Topic placed a sign at the mall entrance saying the event was canceled-it really wasn't-the store had only changed the event from autograph signing and Q & A to just autograph signing.

We learned this from one of my daughter's friends who stayed at the mall. My daughter's friend bought the Twilight t-shirt for $30 and received one of the last wristbands for the event.

Robert Pattison did show up and did sign autographs and greeted the crowds.

I feel like Hot Topic did not plan well for the event. How could they not know and prepare for a huge fan turnout, especially after the reception Twilight received at Comic Con?

I am also a little angry that my daughters and others who made the trip to SF-and followed the directions of the SFPD and believed the store had canceled the event, were deceived and left hanging.

Bleh stupid escapist crap for brooding teens, cosplayers, and fanfic writers. And that girl in the movie looks like an even uglier and whinier Rumer Willis. I'll pass on the nerd daydream fodder, thanks.

"OMG liek, I'm an angsty textspeak teen with a chip on my shoulder, watch me pout! Oh nows I'm in love with a vampire, I'm so rebellious and bad! Now none of his vampire friends like us! Oh noes! Dramz! Conflict! Persecution! Love under stress! Swoon!"

    ugh

  15. Twilight may be huge among young folk, but the most rabid fans are middle aged women. They have been swarming on the internet for years in totally obsessive fan(atic) groups. Until the movie, there wasn't much crossover into mainstream gossip, so a lot of people haven't been aware of what was going on. The hard core Twilight fans are INSANE, and they are many. This is just the tip of the iceberg for what's about to happen.

  16. And no ragging on Kristen Stewart please, she is great! And even though I joke about him, Robert Pattinson is actually a pretty cool kind of nerdy guy, and I think he's freaking out as he realizes what he's gotten himself into.

I haven't read Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse books (that True Blood is based on) but I really like her Harper Connelly series.

  17. There was some gossip on how tickets were sold out for opening night of the movie but I checked all theaters in my city Houston,TX and they aren't sold out. I'm not sure where the gossip that the movie was sold out came for. Sounds like a PR campaign that's not working too well. True Blood's marketing campaign is alot better, they make it seem like vampire's are real. Check the dating site bitten.com pretty funny testimonials. lol.

  18. These books are terrible. Please don't link them in any way to Harry Potter.

Edward is stalkery and violent. Bella feels her only self worth comes from the fact that Edward loves her. Yeah, that's a good lesson to teach. Blah!

  19. this is the movie disney is worried about as competition for bolt's opening weekend. we've also heard it's sold out.

  20. True Blood doesn't entirely follow the books, Ashli. (Though so far they are only on the first one, 'Dead Until Dark').

There have been changes, some fairly major, though they serve the story, and so they work for me. But in other places, it's practically word-for-word from the book.

So far, I'm enjoying True Blood. OK, it's vampires, but it's Alan Ball's show, so it was always going to be interesting, at the very least! I like the books, too, but next to the show, they seem a little colourless.

Twilight I do NOT get - at all, though I admit I haven't read more than a few pages of the first book. That was all I could take of the bad writing and the annoying characters. It's just not aimed at my demographic, I guess! Though if it has a lot of middle-aged female fans, I'm surprised. I'm in that group, and it just strikes me as silly.

  21. I think Louis and Lestat should just chomp their way through all these wannabes.

  22. I miss Blood Ties, even if the special FX were laughable...
At least the female lead wasnt a 20 year old bimbo (though i watched it solely for Henry's hair).

  23. Looks like I'm the minority here.

My female co-workers were all talking about Twilight. In an effort to bond with them, I read the books.

The 2nd was my least favorite. Definitely aimed at teens. I really enjoyed the books and read all 4 within about 2 weeks (I typically read at least 1 book/week).

The author isn't the best writer and I was literally rolling my eyes at some parts of the 2nd book. The idea behind the story is creative and she put in some good twists and turns.

I honestly think I will like the movie more than the book. And it's extremely rare for me to say that...I've only liked 1 or 2 movies more than the book.

  24. Tania - thanks. I'm really enjoying the series and thought I would wait until the season finale to read the first book and go from there. I read Jeff Lindsay's Darkly Dreaming Dexter before watching the first season and was always distracted, comparing.
