MySpace Suicide Case Goes To Trial

It's been awhile since I discussed the death of the girl from suicide who had been allegedly teased by the mother of her friend as well as her friends themselves. Megan Meier was 13 years old when she hung herself after she thought her boyfriend broke up with her. Of course she never knew the boy she was talking to was not real. Instead, allegedly, Lori Drew posed as the boyfriend and allegedly had other girls helping her.

Everytime I read about this case it just floors me. I hate thinking that humans are so low that they could stoop to this behavior thinking it is somehow fun or a joke to screw around with the feelings of another person that way. They allegedly knew that Meier was already suffering from depression. To do this is just beyond any kind of moral compass that most people are brought up with. I could forgive the other two teenage girls because they probably didn't know what the hell they were causing. Sure, they were being mean, but it is Lori Drew who deserves a special place in hell when her time comes.

The trial is not about manslaughter or murder, and is instead basically being tried as a hacker would be tried. It didn't stop Megan's mom from describing the suicide and how she found her daughter though hanging from her bedroom closet.

The defense is trying to say that Lori Drew barely even knew what MySpace was and that she had only a very fundamental knowledge of computers and so could not have committed the crime. If she takes the stand she will probably say something like she has an idea what e-mail and the internet are, but they are just some kind of mystery technology or something.

Good luck with that defense. Drew could get up to 20 years in prison if convicted of all the charges. Unfortunately she probably will just get probation even if convicted. Not much justice in that.

Wow... that is the lamest defense ever. I suppose her lawyers are required to try and defend her to the best of their abilities, and that's the best they could come up with since she's admitted to having her daughter set up the account to the press.

  2. Anything she gets is better than nothing, and it sets a precedent for other cases.
I was actually more impressed with the law that the Illinois General Assembly passed allowing hearsay to be used as evidence. The measure will allow Will County state's attorney to pursue his case against Drew Peterson. I just wonder how such a law can affect prosecution of other cases.

This is sad. It's Sylvia Likens for the modern age - not as horrifying, but still...we're a strange species, aren't we - acts of charity and self-sacrifice by one person, and the person next door can do this.

    Sad, man. Just sad.

  4. As we've all seen time and time again, the anonymity of the internet can make people forget their morals/ethics (if they had any to begin with).

  5. Hopefully she at least gets charged with a felony and gets stuck with it for the rest of her life. Then she'll have to explain it to every potential employer and person who requests a background check.

  6. I agree with Enty. I think she'll probably get probation and walk out of there. I hope the bitch (sorry) gets what's coming to her though - some way, some how.

Watch her get a reality show/book deal out of this.

  8. this makes me spit nails.
this useless excuse for life should be locked away for torturing a poor teenage girl into the depths of suicide.

what kind of parent can she be? what kind of society member can she be?

    see you next tuesday!

  9. This bitch is unreal. You have a daughter the same age as the girl who killed herself and you don't stop and think....maybe I should be an adult and not torture a kid barely in her teens. Kids that age, especially girls, are very emotional. They are in the transition from little kids into the dreaded teenage years. Yeah, you can see other teenagers acting like this because teenagers from time to time are idiots. We were all there at one point in time. A grown ass woman? Scary. I'm glad that the internet was not around when I was growing up. I can't imagine having to deal with local "Heathers" let alone "Heathers" from around the world. I hope these new laws start a sorely needed trend to handle head cases like this broad. They will probably give her probation and that just sucks.

One way or another this Drew person will pay for what she did. Wonder how soundly she is sleeping the nights.

  11. I can't believe this woman has the audacity to walk around like she didn't do anything wrong.
Messing with the feelings of a child is wrong, especially since this young lady was already fragile. She knew exactly what she was doing but she didn't care.
The other night I saw an episode of Law and Order: SVU that touched a little on this subject. They sent the mother to jail for five years, lets see if LIFE will imitate ART.

  12. I agree with everyone here. I don't understand how an adult and a mother could do this to a 13 year old girl. Whatever the punishment, it won't be enough and she'll have to wait for God to deal with her.

  13. I feel so bad for the parents of this young victim .. she should be charged with homicide because her actions drove this little girl to suicide. What in God's name possessed her? Was her own child so threatened by Megan that she had to hatch a plan to drive the little girl insane with grief? I hope she rots in jail, but knowing the american justice system, I am sure they will be lenient and megan's parents are going to have to live knowing that this, dare I say it, woman/mother/monster is still alive and kicking and influencing other young people. I am sick to my stomach

  14. Unfortunately, sociopaths sleep very soundly at night. She has yet to display any sort of sorrow for her actions and this was probably not the first or last time she will prey on someone vulnerable or weak for her own enjoyment.

  15. what a sick person. no conscience or she'd plead guilty and take what's coming to her.

  16. What kimi said.

One of the things I am doing with my kids is making sure that they have friends from many sources; kids from school, from our apartment building, from church, children of our friends, etc. If a kid is having trouble at school, at least they know they have other friends. That's really important!

And not to absolve that evil whore psycho mother, but if that girl committed suicide because of that MySpace business, she had deeper issues. There was more going on. Lots of kids are bullied a lot worse and get through it. I'm not blaming the victim, I'm just saying...

    Ayesha,

Excellent point - but if the woman knew of this girl's problems and continued the harassment, that seems like outright sadism. Yes, the girl clearly had problems that turned taunting and bullying into something more - but she's dead now, and people need someone to punish. And they have someone - the very person who caused those problems to grow.

Maybe the girl should have sought help - scratch that - the girl should have sought help. But the woman nudged her towards that.

  19. Technology these days pretty much dictates internet knowledge. When is the last time you sat down and wrote a letter using a pen? It's unfortunate what doors that opens to young people, they get introduced to so many things so quickly. I applaud parents who monitor their children's usage. That's another scary aspect of this, she asked her mom if she could add the 'boy' to her myspace. How could her mom have known? Obviously 'he' said all the right things, since it was that woman who knew her. She did it to find out if her daughter was being talked about? I'm really shocked her children haven't been taken from her.
    RIP Megan

  20. ayesha, all teens have issues - some are better at dealing with them than others. not knowing how this girl would respond, what a cruel thing to do. this woman is evil and deserves time in hell for contributing to someone's death.

  21. the woman is the lowest of the lowest for what she did. This is a perfect example of why kids need to be monitored on the computer. Other people may disagree, but in order to have myspace/facebook accounts, we needed to make sure as parents we had access every now & then to see what was going on with my kids.

  22. not to dogpile ayesha but the sadist knew the girl has issues in her past, the famillies were familliar with each other.

in fact part of this story later on was that the women who did this was storing a pool table at Megan's parents house and when this happened Megans parents destroyed the pool table and left it on their front lawn...and guess what?
THEY CALLED THE COPS AND TRIED TO HAVE MEGAN"S MOM ARRESTED???
    oops caps lock sorry.
that to me shows what state of mind this crazy bitch is in.

  23. i do hope she gets more than probation, and that this sets a precedent. hopefully the key here is that this was PREMEDITATED.
when i was a child, i was the target of flesh and blood bullies. so was my daughter who's now 22. NOW schools have laws against it. the fact that this was an ADULT goes way beyond all reason.
i can't even put my disgust into words.

Okay, I'm a mother of 3 girls. I wouldn't worry about what the US justice system could or would do. I would take matters into my own hands. NO one screws with my children and gets away with it. I applaud the grieving parents for being much bigger people that I would be.

I know she can't be tried with murder but I hope her bitch ass is thrown in for the longest time possible, and I hope every other woman in that jail gets a note telling them who she is, and what she did. Let the felon mommies take care of her.

Disgusting piece of filth with a human face. I can not put into words the depth of disgust I posses for her, her little help and her child - yes, the child who's the same age and was in on it the whole damn time. Momma taught her spawn to be just like her, which bodes ill for society in future.

  26. i think i saw something on tv about this. they showed the mom and they showed the girls room. So sad. I am a vegatarian left wing liberal and it is times like these that i am glad i still support the eye for an eye punishment that should be vetted out against this evil cunt (i said it).

  27. she didn't cause the girl to kill herself and she is a child herself. How could she know this poor girl would kill herself. There is no place in hell for her, who do you think you are?

  28. oops! This lady is the mother?? she should know better although I am sure she didn't intend for her to die.

  29. elizabeth.....what adult torments a child? please...she does deserve a place in hell. who do i think i am? a human being with a soul and a heart who also happens to be a mother.

  30. I am so happy that Myspace pushed for the Feds to take this case and run with it. A 49 year old woman, who got involved in a spat between children most definitely caused the circumstances of a 13 year old to die. Why this woman's husband didn't divorce her and take their children is beyond me, she should never have any contact with a child again. If convicted she could be sentenced to 30 years, meaning she will do 85% of her sentence in a Federal Facility, with broom handles galore one hopes, most convicts have children and they don't like child killers in prison.

This woman is so vile, a special place in hell will need to be created. Slime.

  32. Seems to me her employee deserves some time, too. Could kids be charged with cyber bullying? Can adults?

Wonder if the husband knew and all. So, if you live in Missouri, don't buy a house from or sell one through Curtis Drew.
