Your Turn

Hey, it's Halloween. The one time of the year that my parents actually look normal. This is one of my dad's favorite days of the year. He gets no greater pleasure than in scaring the hell out of elementary school kids who are finally going to front doors by themselves. But, he does make up for it by always giving good candy. You know the brand name stuff. There is none of that dollar store candy at our house. None of that go to the grocery store, spend $10 and get 20 pounds of candy stuff. We go for your Snickers, Milky Way, Reese's. You know, the big boys. I hated going to houses when I was little and having some mom give me a popcorn ball or an apple. Dammit, I wanted candy.

So, today in Your Turn, we have two things for you to respond to. I need to know your favorite Halloween candy, and your most memorable costume. And when I say costume, I am talking about one you wore for Halloween, and not one you wore on your anniversary that says Open Here.

One year I was Storm from the X-men, I LOVE HER

  5. Twix and Sweet Tarts -- mmmmmmm. I buy extra on Halloween so if there are any left over, they are all for me.

Last year I went as the dancing banana from "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" fame -- it was a big hit

    ReplyDelete
  6. Reese's PB Cups and Milky way. I trained my parents so that even after I was out of the house, they know enough to buy and give out the "good stuff."

Best costume - Went as Holly Golightly from Bfast at Tiffany's one year. Won 2nd place and $100.

  7. My favorite....Snickers! And my best costume? Hmm, I would have to say the year I went as Monica Lewinsky, complete with a blue beret, kneepads, and a toothpaste stain on the front of my dress!

  8. I like Candy Corn, 'cause I only eat it once a year.

A few years ago I went as a tree. I had on a very tight and very short green velvet dress, and I painted leaves and branches all over the rest of my body. Got a lot of raves for that one, lol!

i won the contest the year i went out as:
Night of the Living Dead Bride

i wore a real wedding dress w/veil(that i ripped up and dirtied) and carried a dead bouquet. my make-up was great and i didn't break character until i won. not one person i knew recognised me all night. My boyfriend was the groom.

  14. Reese's peanut butter cups are my fave. Already bought a few big bags for trick o treaters that my bf and I have devoured. just made another trip to Target to refill the bucket for kids tonight.

My best costume as a kid was the Ragedy Ann my sister sewed for me. I was able to reuse the dress for a Little Orphan Annie play at school. We always won the trophies for best costume because my mom or sister would make them. No store bought shit.

  15. and enty, i'm with you on the candy. none of the cheap ass stuff for us. we give out snickers, milky way, kit kats, twix, m & m's and the big peanut butter cups.

i see the same groups coming back for seconds sometimes and i don't care just get it out of my house by the time the curfew is over.

Sugar Babies, Nestle's crunch, Babe Ruth, Hunks

Went to the office dressed up as a Nurse with a huge needle hehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Butterfingers! Hands dowm favorite (and I have the a** to prove it!

A few years back I went as Jack-in-the-Box with a paper mache head I made and a business suit. I won a contest with that and my brother borrowed it and won another!

I do remember going to a party as Snow White (as an adult) and was amazed at the number of guys who hit on me! 100% kinky, too. Who knew?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kit Kat

In 1978 my mom made me the best Wonder Woman costume. I was 5 years old and had just met Lynda Carter at Target - she was signing her album. I told her I was going to be Wonder Woman when I grew up. I guess I better get on that.

  22. When I was about 22 I worked at a large Texas mall where we were jam packed with children and adults in costume, trick or treating. My female co-worker went as The Easter Bunny, and I went as Rapunzel in a burgundy velvet dress with a train and gold brocade rope as a belt, I had really long hair (to my knees!), so I curled the hell out of it and
did a few braids here and there and intertwined seed pearls throughout. I totally rocked it!

  23. Oops I forgot: PAYDAYS!

    ReplyDelete
  24. reese peanut butter cups when I was young, probably almond joys now.

Younger - mom made me a dog costume and put shoe polish or something on my nose to make it black. I was so upset about the black nose it actually made the costume (sad little puppy was actually adorable).

Adult (in age only) a group of us went as Chinese Food (very creative friend sewed them all )- there was a bottle of Kikoman's soy sauce, a fortune cookie, a box of chow mein, an app plate with egg rolls, bbq pork and fried shrimp, we entered a contest and a bong won

    I've never celebrated Halloween.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My favourite costume was a Geisha. Took me about five hours to do my hair and make-up and it was perfect.

I looked amazing and NO ONE recognized me.(insert joke here)

Favourite candy: Reese's Peanutbutter cups. Yum.

Best costume on someone else: Last year I saw a twenty-something guy dressed up as a Kissing Booth. He had a little wire and curtain contraption around his upper torso and with a sign stating kisses were 25 cents. I saw him at about 3am when I was coming home from a party and overheard him telling a guy that he "did really well and kissed about 100 girls".

    Awesome costume, seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  27. ms, my brother did that one year. he started out at .50 a kiss, crossed it off and put .25. it looked like he was marked down...lol.

almond joys......forgot about those. think i'll go have one now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey, gauchogirl:

I know of someone who got a job by showing to the interview dressed as Wonder Woman. The ad stated they wanted an wonder woman... When the hiring committee finally stopped laughing, they hired her on the spot.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Molly, a marked down brother...too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm partial to Milk Duds myself.

My most memorable costume was the cavewoman costume I wore in college. The skirt was so short I kept pulling it down to cover my butt. It wasn't a pretty sight.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tootsie pops
    Lady Godiva

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous1:15 PM

Favorite Candy: Peanut Butter Cups or smarties, depending on if I'm in the mood for chocolate or just sugar.

Best costume: My favorite was when I dressed up as Ash from Army of Darkness complete with nametag and duct-tape "metal" hand. Everyone else's favorite was Clark Kent with my superman t-shirt poking through (since everyone who meets me says.. "y'know, you look like superman").

    ReplyDelete
  33. DN, does your boyfriend know how lucky he is? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Snickers or those crunchy peanut-buttery crispy things that only seemed to be around at H-Ween.

I was a nutria. No one--and I really mean NO one (except my crowd) knew what I was. got asked all night--rat? Mouse? Dog? Rabbit? Cat?

Really--who the hell knows what a nutria is?

I worked at a waterfront restaurant that fed nutria outside all season, so of course our crowd of serious drunkards knew what I was.

It was a good likeness, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love all candy! but, candy corn is the greatest at this time of year.

last year I dressed as Elphaba, all green makeup and wig and I looked better than I look when i'm having a normal day. (i have issues) ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. My favorite candy is Twix. Or Smarties, 'cause Halloween is the only time I ever get those.

My best costume was when I was 7 or 8 and went as Queen Elizabeth I.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous1:51 PM

    Gimme M&M's!

My best costume was in college when I was a dryer to my boyfriend's washing machine. A big hit, but we couldn't sit down all night.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Candy Corn is probably my favorite Halloween Candy, most likely b/c it is only available this time of year. I love Reese's peanut butter cups but it doesn't need to be Halloween to get them.

My most memorable costume was in fourth grade - I was a Hi-C drink box. It's so random, but my mom made it, and it was done perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bad Fish- jesus your bible thumping parents were NO fun were they? have fun this year.

Peanut Butter Cups and nothing else. my brother and i used ot steal all my other broithers smarties, eat all of them excpet the red ones and tape up the box. when he found out and got super pissed we woudls ing "When you eat your smarties do you eat the red ones last??" he hated us.

    BEST costume ever..ET.
it was the year it came out i was like 6 or 7. my mom worked on it for 2 months. it looked exactly like the real thing and my dad rigged up the finger and heart to have a light in it that would shine with a lil button in my glove. it was amazing and mom ended up winning an award for it in the paper.
    love you mom!!!

  40. not really answering the questions but ive had 7 little kids come to my door already and only ONE said trick or treat. they just expect the candy! lil sh!ts.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Fave is Reese PBC.
Best costume - giant baked potato complete with sourcream, chives and bacon bits. I would have won first prize but I was outside having a spliff and wasn't in the room when they annoucned it so they called the next person. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  42. asstronaut, that drives me crazy. nobody says trick or treat anymore. you open the door and they hold their bags up like they're in a big hurry.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Halloween wasn't big in Sweden when I grew up. They do it now, because they've seen so many American movies, but I didn't do Halloween as a kid.

But my husband has a good one; a few years ago, he painted himself green, put on a pair of shorts, and went as "the plain credible hulk".

I have a massive sweet tooth and eat candy all through the year. It's just that in October, all the chocolates come in orange wrappers.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hey montanamarriott--

I was Storm one year too!

The wig didn't cooperate so well that year, but overall the thing was slamming.

Had lightning bolt props and everything!

    ReplyDelete
  45. ykkstuck--

damn--y'all's sounds very ornate and killer talent must've gone into making it. But I gotta say I've seen some pretty dang good bong costumes in my day--and seen 'em win the contest, too!

One dude in a bong suit had to have his girlfriend "feed" him his beers all night because he was encased in a tube.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was feeling bad for bad fish, too, jax!

But a lot of our (US) holidays are pagan-based, aren't they?

I have some relatives who don't celebrate some stuff because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. will stop posting now......

    ReplyDelete
  48. yea, my friends are the creative ones, I just go along for the debauchery! The bong was pretty good - it lit up and smoked. I think the girlfriend was feeding him beers too :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. ..Just came back from the grocery store. Little Heroin Annie was in line ahead of me.

Dressed up like Little Orphan Annie. Except is a drug addict. Excellent make-up job and the syringe taped to her forearm was a nice touch.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Smarties and twizzlers-delicious. Also love the tootsie rolls and jujyfruits. Seriously when I saw that bright yellow box I knew I struck gold. Nobody else liked jujyfruits so when we traded candy, it was pretty easy.

Most memorable costume-Southern Belle in 4th grade. 2 of my other friends copied my idea and there was tension for a while there, and Halloween was the big day to see who came out on top.

Of course mine was the only one that was store-bought. :(

    ReplyDelete
  51. My favorite costume was in college. I put a cardboard picture frame around my shoulders and wore a nice scoop-neck silk blouse with a garter belt, fishnet stockings, high heels, and a whip. I was "Why Mona Lisa is REALLY smiling."

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous3:32 PM

Heh heh Jax yeah that's so true.

They actually did not let me even go to school on Halloween, for fear I'd participate in the festivities.

Did I mention I hate my parents? lol

    ReplyDelete
  53. SweeTarts.
    I love pumpkin seeds, too.

Last year I made a swan dress a la Bjork. My past favorites are a dead bug (with eight legs that all moved together) and Wednesday Addams (with my boyfriend as Pugsley).

    ReplyDelete
  54. Love this thread...

Snickers and one year I was a gypsy, I was in 6th or 7th grade and I loved it!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Favorite: Affy Tapples.

Mickey Mouse costume (my favorite Disney character) that came from the store as a little kid everyone had store bought costumes. The face was adorable but made of hard plastic that was very irritating and kept slipping out of place all evening. The pants were always too long and eventually tore somewhere before the end of the night.

As an adult I would be too embarrassed to dress up in a costume but I admire people who can pull it off.

Least favorite: popcorn balls. I hope they've discontinued those awful things.

    ReplyDelete
  56. my favorite halloween candy:
Big Hunk or Baby Ruth. It is the only time of year I ever ate a Baby Ruth!

    Best costume:
    When I was 4 or 5 - Witchie-poo (sp?) from HR Puff-n-Stuff. I freakin loved that costume

    ReplyDelete
  57. homemade caramel apples!!

best costume---i was in the third grade and my mom made me a pink flapper dress with fringe and made me a headband with a huge feather on it. it was beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  58. CHARLESTON CHEWS! Man, I miss those.

I think my best costume is this year's which was just created as of Tuesday. Poison Ivy from Batman, spandex green ice skater dress, thigh high fishnets with green garters and ivy in them, ivy wound around my arms and stuck to the dress, some crazy makeup, and my natural red hair!

    ReplyDelete
  59. worst memory about halloween was how my father would go through all our bags after we went to bed and eat the maryjanes and my mother would eat all the chuckles.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Heath Bars! People who give out Heath Bars LOVE trick-or-treaters. They're the best! That's the GOOD shit.

I was Jessica Rabbit in the second grade. My grandma even sewed tiny little fake boobies in my red satin dress, and she made me a pair of purple gloves.

Halloween is the BEST holiday, by far! It stays fun from childhood until you choose to stop celebrating it, really, AND it can be inexpensive, unlike freaking Christmas, for instance. It's all about fun and fake scariness.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I actually love popcorn balls! I am old enough and grew in a safe enough and small enough town that we got homemade treats...

I loved my store bought Cinderella costume with the hard plastic mask. I even had the little plastic slippers...

I still love Halloween and give out good candy, and this year also little playdohs!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I always give out the good stuff: snickers, milky way, kit kats, hershey's, paydays, peanut butter cups. That being said, my favorite are 100 Grand bars. YUM! I didn't dress up this year, but last year I went as a wood nymph, complete with giant wings.

    ReplyDelete
  63. C'mon, all candy's good. Even the crap at the bottom of the bowl is awesome 3 days later. Yes, that's how fast I go thru a sack of candy.

Phyllis Diller, complete with 1 high heel, 1 flat. Killer on the back (Duh), but the most fun I've ever had on Hallowe'en.

    ReplyDelete
  64. One year at work I was the little kid from ET that rode on the bike into the sky. Rocked the bike and everything.

I like all candy. Love Smarties (I'm eating some as I type), Snickers, Peppermint Patties, Reese's etc. Ironically, I live in Hershey-the land of chocolate and they don't allow trick or treating on Halloween. It is always the Thursday prior to Halloween. Apparently, it's to keep the "riff raff" out. (You figure out what that means. Your first guess is prolly right.) Weird town. Anyway, I've been able to raid my kid's stash all day. mMMMMMmmmmchocolatemmmMMMMmmmmm. He was the grim reaper last night and cleaned up. Rich people always give out the good stuff! yays!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Happy Holloween everybody!

I'm like Marymartha, I looooooooved popcorn balls and for that matter pretty much anything that was homemade with the exception of caramel apples because the apples were always really sour to me.

Similar to Molly, but worse, my entire family would help themselves to my candy before (before!) I was allowed to have any under the pretense of searching for razor blades. The whole family.

I don't remember any of my Halloween costumes though, although I think that when I was a kid I probably liked anything having to do with either gypsies or I Dream of Jeannie costumes.

    ReplyDelete
  66. What are these popcorn balls everyone's talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous6:49 PM

mooshki - damn right my boyfriend is a lucky man. (Though I'm pretty lucky too.)

Popcorn balls are not discontinued, I saw a box of 30 for $5 at the store today as I bought the 2nd-to-last full sized pumpkin.

    Harriet - http://www.recipezaar.com/129714

recipe and picture for popcorn balls. They're rock hard and old ladies always gave them out.

  68. I don't dress up for halloween, but my friend Jonny has won a few costume contests in our little town near Yosemite.

One year he dressed as a company executive by wearing a suit and wrapping himself in red tape.

My favorite of his was Jonny Cat! He wore cat ears and a black tee shirt and tights with a pink dot under the tail. He carried around a small pizza box with the Jonny Cat logo on the top and kitty litter with tootsie rolls and fake bloody birds in the bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I forgot one...

When companies first started drug testing Jonny dressed as a crazy doctor. He wore a sign that said Urine Trouble and drank beer out of a lab sample cup!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Anonymous8:31 PM

Best candy was always those root beer barrel things. Love those.

Best costume? When I was 7 months pregnant I put on one of those slinky pink leopard print cat costumes. It was pretty dang funny. Because what you really want in life is a very pregnant cat on your porch. Happy Halloween =)

    ReplyDelete
  71. For all you Smarties fans, I gotta tell you: I work for a trucking company, and Smarties is on e of the things we ship.

In fact, right now on the dock there are (no lie) 15 THOUSAND pounds of Smarties. Now THAT'S a sugar coma!

    ReplyDelete
  72. candy corn.

And I remember once actually getting a store bought costume. You know when it was a plastic mask and plastic decorated kid-sized poncho? I can't remember what I dressed up as but I was so excited to get a "real" costume and finally go trick or treating. I was probably 5 or 6.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Candy is so cheap at holiday time anyone who doesn't give out name brand is an ass. You want to make carmel apples and popcorn balls (and I do too) keep them at home. Nobody's mama is gonna let them keep homemade anyway.

I have a couple favorites for costumes:
Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
    Glinda the Good Witch
    Marilyn Monroe

Hint: Every girl who likes to play dress up needs a gay man friend who works in wardrobe. They have EVERYTHING, and can sew it to fit you.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Snickers, hands down, my favorite.

The best Halloween costume? It was 6 pieces of psterboard stapled together with leg-and-arm holes. Each side had the corresponding numbers of black spots drawn onto it, and I was...dice. Well, "a die" at any rate. Impossible to go to the bathroom, though. But very cool.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Favorite candy? Anything chocolate.
My mother was allergic, so the only time it came into the house was Halloween and only if we trick or treated.

My best costume? The year my late best friend double dog dared me to do drag - I ended up spending close to $1000 to do it...got the costume from a costume company, hired a makeup artist to do my face, and to my great shame and horror (and everyone else's great amusement) it turned out that when I'm slung up I look like Sally Jesse Raphael -

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hey Jax - did you suck them very slowly, or crunch them very fast?

The only costume I can remember from childhood is the white sheet my mother cut eyeholes out of so I went as a ghost.

Favourite candy - tootsie rolls despite the fact when I was 7, we found a pillowcase full of Hallowe'en candy my mother hid. It was June. The tootsie roll I ate pulled all my fillings out. Other than that - tootsie pops.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Candy Pumpkins (like candy corn).

One year me and two of my friends went trick-or-treating together: one as Aunt Jemima herself, one as a giant bottle of Aunt Jemima syrup and one as a giant box of Aunt Jemima pancake mix. And yes, we sang the Aunt Jemima commercial song at each house.

    Silly kids.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Belgian Chocolate. I had nice neighbors when I was a kid. I once was a carrot, and went to a half dozen parties and won best costume at each party, I rocked the carrot!

    ReplyDelete
  79. aprilinparis, that sucks. hope you had a very small family...lol.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Best candy: Kisses!

    Best Costume: Slutty Muslim
I have a beautiful burka. No makeup, no hair, didn't matter. It was wonderful! Then over the knee boots with spike heels and long, long red fingernails. Nobody every knew who I was. It was really the best. But, sadly, not PC now. Haven't worn it in years and years. The burka really is beautiful too.

    ReplyDelete
  81. My husband went as a pervert, we had a huge fake penis a nylon ankle stocking stuffed and with black fur and stitched around the top for an awesome head. It LOOKED SO REAL. He then wore a trench coat over this. Well 2 years later JC Penny's was having a coat sell where you bring in your old coat for a discount. My mother asked if she could take some of our coats. We said she could have any coat in the down stairs closet.

My mother did not check the pockets. The clerk at JC Pennys decides to check the pockets for my 83 year old mother. What does she pull out but, that damn penis. The clerks is standing there holding this damn penis when my mother screams that's my son-inlaws and grabs it out of the clerks hand. Put it this way I never wanted to go shopping with my mother to JC Pennys. I could just imagine the look on that clerks face....
