Today's Blind Items
I figure if I actually write it down, then it will force me to finish writing it. Therefore, on Wednesday there will be a long blind item from classic Hollywood which should blow your mind. Not literally blow it, because that would be messy for your fellow co-workers and think of the cleaning crew. Although they would probably get some overtime and that really isn't a bad thing right now is it? Of course, since your office probably hired a cleaning company who sub-contracted it out to another firm, they are probably using undocumented workers who don't get overtime and if they file any actions, they will be deported, so maybe blowing your mind is not a good thing. Anyway, here is the item for today.
First time ever in the blind items for this intellectual B list actor. I say intellectual because he seems like he has a brain, and he has made a career of films in which a person actually has to think. Kind of like the Parker Posey for actors, but younger. Well, our actor had to take about a six month mandatory break from filming because he could not get insured. Though he has managed to stay out of the headlines, his problems are very Lindsay Lohanish minus the family drama. During his last film, he did so much coke that he had to get his nose repaired. Because of this, before any insurance company would back him, they wanted him to go to rehab which he did for three months. He also has to submit to weekly drug screening as a condition to being insured.
stumped?!
ReplyDeleteI'll throw out Joseph Gordon-Levitt. His movies are VERY edgy and indie.
ReplyDeleteOr Gael Garcia Bernal--but I don't think he had a break.
James Franco? In college now.
ReplyDeleteWas there a break for him, though?
Nope, never mind. ;)
ReplyDeleteRyan Phillipe comes to mind for me
ReplyDeleteNot very many clues here.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say it's not JGL a) he seems more grounded than this, b) 3rd Rock from the Sun was hardly brainy.
my first thought was Ed Norton until I read younger than Parker Posey... hmm
ReplyDeleteamh - me too until that part
ReplyDeleteother than that I'm stumped for now
joaquin phoenix? where's he been?
ReplyDeleteEmile Hirsch?
ReplyDeleteI was going to say Joseph Gordon Levitt too. Wasn't he the favored choice of a previous BI where he was stealing drugs from purses at parties, or something like that?
ReplyDeleteooh i'm voting for Joaquin Phoenix
ReplyDeleteRyan Gosling? There were pictures awhile back that he had a nose job.
ReplyDeleteryan gosling?
ReplyDelete.....but i love him
-def B list, I consider intellectual
-nom for oscar for half nelson where he played a lovable teacher, who was a coke head at night
....life imitating art or vice versa
-that could be the reason he and Rachel Mcadams broke up....now that he's clean they r back together. They r rumored to be engaged

Adam Brody?
ReplyDeleteomg, jinks!!!
ReplyDeleteKnock on wood Christine
My guesses: Joseph Gordon Levitt or Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Both have that indie feel about their work.
ReplyDeleteStill have my thinking cap on, but I'm a B List intellectual, and the cap's a little tight, so the blood don't always get to my head so good.
Jinks! Thanks for posting all that about Ryan. So, what film would he have been doing coke on (if it was him)? Lars and the Real Girl? All Good Things? But, didn't they just finish filming that? Joaquin fits too.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of Ryan's, and he hasn't been out of the spotlight enough to have gone to rehab. Not him (even though it kind of fits and there have been rumors). I like the Joaquin or Joseph Gordon-Levitt guess.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't Joaquin be considered A List?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking Ryan Gosling as well. It would explain the semi-large gap in production as well as the breakup with Rachel. He was also fired from the movie "The Lovely Bones", and the reason publicized never sat right with me.
ReplyDeleteIf he were fired from the movie because of drugs, it would take awhile until he could prove he could be insured again.
I'm on IMDB comparing older and newer photos of "intellectual B list" actors to see if their noses look any different. I really should go outside.
ReplyDeleteIt's a difficult one, because it could be any of those B-List, indie actors - Gosling, Hirsch, Gordon-Levitt. I guess I don't pay attention to any of them to know if they have disappeared while at rehab. My guess is Gosling, just because the breakup with McAdams came out of nowhere, he was fired from The Lovely Bones, he hasn't worked much lately, there was talk he had a nose job and it just sounds like him.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link that talks about Ryan Gosling's nose job:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.makemeheal.com/news/ryan-gosling-nose-job/288
there are many rumors about Joaquin Phoenix's illness in Cannes 2008!Now i can believe in Adrien Brody guess!
ReplyDeleteIt's not Joaquin Phoenix. He's openly been to rehab twice - once for drugs, once for alcohol. And he hasn't had any problems getting movie roles or insured for them.
ReplyDeleteWould it be wrong of me to say Ben Affleck?
I don't think it's Adrien Brody either. He's got an Oscar, so doesn't that make him automatically A-list by Enty's definition?
ReplyDeleteI also don't think it's Ryan Gosling. He's worked steadily - except for last year when he dropped out of Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" because he showed up looking like Porky Pig and Peter Jackson didn't want the character to be so overweight. The two disagreed vehemently over Gosling's interpretation of character (the being fat part of the character) and Gosling dropped out of the movie. He then spent several months dropping the weight and then signed on for 3 movies - one of which was a role Brad Pitt dropped out of (The Dallas Buyer's Club).

ReplyDeleteHey Efcan,
ReplyDeleteOr is that what his publicist wants you to believe?
Kiki dunst went to the same rehab as Lilo...except she only went because she was sad...uh huh
It may not be Ryan but he has the most circumstancial evidence.
Hey Kristine, I bet he was coked out of his mind on Lars and the real girl...
Ryan was fired from The Lovely Bones - they made it sound like it was a mutual decision, but he was fired.
ReplyDeleteshoe addict - I agree with you. It may not be him, but the evidence fits.
Jason Schwartzman!
ReplyDeleteSpicey--Jason Schwartzman is a VERY interesting thought.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking Green Wave's Adam Brody guess....that was my 1st inclination too....
ReplyDeletehas anyone checked the reveals to see if ryan has not shown up since Enty states this person is BI newbie (or any other guess for that matter)?
ReplyDeleteThe only problem with Schwartzman is the "minus the family drama" part.
ReplyDeleteSchwartzman is Talia Shire's son and Francis Ford Coppola's nephew. He's a first cousin to Sofia Coppola, Nicolas Cage and Kathleen Brennan (Tom Waits' wife)

also i think Joaquin Phoenix was filming that 3 lovers movie (don't remember the name of it) less than 6 months ago.
ReplyDeleteShia Lebouef or however you spell his name.
ReplyDeleteHe was caught earlier this year and he's young enough to fit the blind.
Of all these guesses Emile Hirsch fits the best when we say "intellectual" and "career of films in which a person actually has to think." JGL was in TV and some teen movies and Gosling is not new to blind items and the majority of his films are superficial.
ReplyDeletepaul dano?
ReplyDeletemzharley -
ReplyDeleteShia Lebouef? Indie?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been upfront about his drug experimenting, but has talked about respecting them and what they can do for you. I actually believe he thinks this way (because why else would an actor mention drugs in an interview if its not recreational), and therefore i really dont see him as someone that would develop a habit.
ReplyDeleteThe first person I thought of was Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Comes across as very brainy.
ReplyDeleteHe allegedly had drug problems that interfered with the filming of Showtime's "The Tudors".
But Ryan Gosling -- fired from a first-rate film? Now that's evidence.
Definitely Ryan Gosling. It all fits. Plus, I don't ever remember him being a subject of a blind item on this board.
ReplyDeleteExactly.
ReplyDeleteJGL is apparently the answer to many-a-gay blind (which makes me squee more for him, if thats possible - though i think he's at least bi and really into french girls). He's only done a few 'makes you think' films, and they were not really well known even by indie standards. His others (the most well known ones) were teen or action.
Rumours and photographic 'evidence' of a nose job is a pretty big hint IMO -> RG.
I think you're right with the Gosling thing. Too bad, because he is a fave of mine.
ReplyDeleteEven with 2 Oscar nominated films, I don't think that Paul Dano is b-list yet.
Micheal Pitt. Although he seems like a stoner.
ReplyDeleteI'm worried it is Joaquin Phoenix. I can't find him anywhere. He has just totally disappeared off the face of the earth. He is definitely A list though, I would think.
ReplyDeleteLeo DiCaprio- on imdb nothing listed for films between 2006 and 2008. Plus he's done Blood Diamond, the Departed, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of NY, PLUS hes in the candids.
ReplyDeleteHow about Michael Cera? He must have a secret or two. No one can be that perfect.
ReplyDeleteMy very first thought was Elijah Wood, and now having read what the rest of you have to say, I think I'm closer to the answer than you are!
ReplyDelete(BTW, check out http://www.mostbeautifulman.com/actors/ryangosling/index.shtml -- it would appear he had that rhinoplasty years ago.)
I'm on board with Shia LeBeouf.
ReplyDeleteShia Laboeuf "seems like he has a brain, and he has made a career of films in which a person actually has to think"? The actor who's done "Transformers," "Eagle Eye," "Disturbia," and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"? That Shia Laboeuf? Or do you mean some other Shia Laboeuf?
ReplyDeleteHahaha Binkym, thats what I thought when someone mentioned Emile Hirsh. The Emile Hirsh of Speed Racer?
ReplyDeleteShia hasn't exactly "managed to stay out of the headlines" so I don't think it can be him. Gosling seems like the good bet.
ReplyDeleteI Immediately thought it was James McAvoy.
ReplyDeleteKind of billed as the thinking man-actor. Was everywhere for a while, and has been out of sight recently...
@Starburst: And "The Girl Next Door"!
ReplyDelete@Kate: Oooh; good one! I've often commented on his seeming allergies, as his nose seems runny and irritated, but now you've got me looking at it differently. He fits the blind; he's not done any dopey stuff. You might be onto something! I like your guess better than my Elijah Wood one!
Is Edward Norton B list? He was my immediate thought.
ReplyDeleteThen followed by Michael Pitt, whom someone else cited...but his nose is pretty bulbous
My last guess is Jake Gylenhaal
Ryan Gosling totally fits. Fired. Nose job (check out awfulplasticsurgery.com). Break up with McAdams. Plays intense roles that he perhaps gets a bit too much into (e.g. Half Nelson).
ReplyDeleteJGL and Emile Hirsch have hardly been in enough movies to have a Parker Posey-esque rep an indie king. Besides, Hirsch was in Girl Next Door and Speed Racer. Not so indie, really.
I don't think Michael Pitt is B list.
Elijah Wood has too many blockbusters under his belt at this point to be considered for this. (Also, when he was in Prague filming Everything is Illuminated, he didn't have a rep as a coke fiend -- and that sorta goss made its way around fairly quickly.)
Joaquin has been open about going to rehab.

ReplyDelete@swede, Leo is almost the definition of A list so it can't be him.
ReplyDeleteWe're going years back (like 1997), but I know that RG first tried the coke back when he was making Breaker High. Filmed in Canada, I dated one of the other actors.
Just saying.
PLEASE can't people read the blind items carefully before guessing randomly? Jake G is NOT B-list (1 Oscar nom and high profile) nor is Joaquin Phoenix (2 Oscar Noms, a Grammy and scads of other awards), nor is Elijah Wood (star of one of the biggest blockbuster franchises in movie history), and Brody *won* a fucking Oscar for crying out loud. Also as the previous commenter pointed out Leo is almost the definition of A-list with 3 Oscar noms in highly regarded movies and also extremely high profile. I love this blog, but the guesses in the comments are often maddeningly lazy. I'm shocked no-one guessed George Clooney or Brad Pitt...probably just a matter of time.
ReplyDeleteRyan Gosling is the answer - didn't know it was a problem, but I know he dabbles in the ol' marching powder. Big pothead too. So is Rachel MacAdams.
ReplyDeleteI think it's George Clooney or Brad Pitt. Just kidding. (No offense, dvz.) I actually think the Ryan Gosling guess is pretty good.
ReplyDeletePeter Saarsgard?
ReplyDeleteIndie king, seems to be the thinking, thespian's actor.
I don't think that it's Shia. The BI says the actor has never been on before. Has Gosling?
I'm going with LIBBY's guess, Gael Garcia Bernal.
ReplyDeleteHe was a reveal on Lainey as the idiot who had his assistant getting him scads of coke while he was at TIFF a couple of years back.
He fits the indie, solid B list. He does have a few movies on the go for 2009, but he only had two movies in 2008 (released, so who knows when he worked on them?)
Wow, thanks elsiefire. I just thought of him because he's a real up-and-comer, extremely talented, but scary-skinny sometimes and looks like crap often too.
ReplyDeleteBut the RG guess is the best, I think. Especially with the gap in his work.
ReplyDeleteBut when he fired from that film, he was GROSSLY overweight--gained for the role. Can you even gain ANY weight if you are coked-up enough to get fired from a major motion picture at the last minute?
Does anyone know if you can gain like 50 pounds while strung out on coke?
No, sounds more like the munchies from pot
ReplyDeletelibby - you can if you're drinking booze with it.
ReplyDeletedvz - Ent has said that an Oscar only guarantees B-list status. The lists are based on how much money or box-office draw you make. On top of that, Ent isn't always consistent in defining list (Eva Mendes as a-list)
Rumor of Ryan G's firing from The Lovely Bones is greatly exaggerated.
ReplyDeleteRyan and Peter clashed about the look of the character. Neither would budge.
Peter essentially does not like working with actors. He wants to work with puppets who do exactly what he says. He is also manipulative in that he will pretend to be collaborative with the actor and sometimes pretend he doesn't know what he wants and ask the actor to do a scene many different ways just to get a particular shot.
He will not negotiate or compromise with an actor. Peter hates conflict. Disagreeing with his vision is considered to be conflict.
With Peter, it's his way or the highway. He thinks of himself as a great visionary and every one is there only to support his vision. No other opinion is required, thank you very much.
private - they did clash, but he was fired. They spun it to make it sound like it was a mutual decision, but it was not. Ryan was fired.
ReplyDeleteI like the Ryan Gosling guess...but I did think Michael Pitt when I first read it.
ReplyDeleteHaving your septum repaired from excessive coke use doesn't necessarily show after as a nose job. It's just that some people decided to have some cosmetic work done at the same time.
Ryan knew if he didn't back down he was off the film. He was 100% okay with it. He was given the opportunity to do it Peter's way and declined.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I know Peter and lots of his peeps. The 'mutual decision' thing just wasn't a PR spin.
I don't think it's Joaquin,
ReplyDeletehe has NOT "made a career of films in which a person actually has to think"
Gladiator, Walk the line, Signs, The Village, We own the night, that movie about firefighters, 8mm...Spacecamp!! lol
Also, apparently Joaquin was spotted 2 months ago, looking fine.
