John Daly was taken to jail over the weekend and I don't think anyone noticed. I don't know how many of you know who John Daly is, but he is a world class drunk and a world class golfer who basically let the drinking win out. Oh, and the gambling. Yeah, he is such a gambler that he won $700,000 in a tournament once and within 8 hours had flown to Vegas and blown it all plus another few hundred thousand. He has been married four times, with one of those wives spending time in federal prison with her dad for some kind of fraud thing. Anyway, I thought it was kind of sad that he was picked up by the cops in North Carolina and I didn't even see anything on ESPN.
John wasn't actually arrested. He was just escorted to the drunk tank to sleep it off. Apparently John was on his tour bus and he, and everyone else on board decided that stopping at Hooters would be a great idea. Well after eating 100 chicken wings and drinking six pitchers of beer all by himself, people did not want John back on the bus. Not sure why since it was his bus. Possibly a gas problem? Who knows. So, he did what anyone would do after eating and drinking that much. He fell asleep in the parking lot. For some reason this is against the law in North Carolina. I guess he was blocking parking spaces or something. Maybe snoring too loud? Anyway, the cops took him to jail. One of John's friends who sounds like a real winner decided to call the police a few choice words and so he actually was arrested. Real winner in all of this? Hooters. All the free publicity plus they are a sponsor of John Daly. They must be proud.
At least he gives his sponsors his business.
ReplyDeleteI understand the people on the bus, but couldn't they call a cab. Sounds like it was some party.
he suffers from depression, so i'm not going to be so quick to judge or put him down. anyone fighting as many demons as he is has to be pitied instead of mocked, imo.
ReplyDeleteAll I want to know how many calories 6 pitchers of beer and 100 wings is. I love me some Hooters wings.
ReplyDeletegive me a brief background, molly. if you don't mind.
ReplyDeleteenty, my boo is in court fighting a vicious paparazzi and you dare not post a story.
ill save my pity for those who deserve it not some rich sad bastard with a drinking problem surrounding himself with yes men....on his private bus outside a Hooters no less.
ReplyDeleteIMO.
q.s., not a problem. he's been diagnosed as having clinical depression which makes it hard for him to function sometimes. i guess it takes a while to find the right medication and then sometimes the medication stops working and you're back to square one, etc. because of this he also drinks and he's got a gambling problem. he's been in rehab more than once, been okay more than once, but always seems to slide back into the hell hole again.
ReplyDeletepeople like him don't want to live like this, but his challenges are bigger than ours so he seems to lose control over and over again. i feel for him and his family.
I'm wondering why no one is saying anything about Hooters continuing to serve a customer (even a famous customer) who is so obviously wasted. I know he is responsible for his own drinking, but I would think Hooters would be afraid of the liability in this lawsuit crazy society.
ReplyDeleteThree North Carolina stories in a row! Too bad they're gossipy, but it's about time my home state got some love on this site.
ReplyDeletethanks, molly!! :D
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the drunk guy that Andy of Mayberry used to lock up until he slept it off.
ReplyDeleteq.s. - anytime. ;-)
ReplyDeletecalifblondy, you mean otis the town drunk? lmao!!
lyz, i think servers are so taken by celebrity that all common sense flies out the window sometimes.
You dont think anyone noticed? Google Trends begs to differ.
ReplyDeleteI think this situation is just really, really sad -- clinical depression exacerbated by alcohol abuse isn't anything to snigger at, and it's reprehensible of his tourmates to just leave him in that drunkass state. You would think that they'd have a certain amount of loyalty. I mean, do they think he's a megadick or something? This is like a fratboy prank or some shit. Why spend your time locked up in a moving box with a drunken golfer if he's not at least a ~sweetheart~ of a drunken golfer? Unless he's constantly spewing vitriol and smearing his feces over his staff, he's not enough of an asshole to just ditch in a Hooters parking lot, for chrissakes!
ReplyDeleteI saw a profile of this dude on 60 Minutes a while back, and it saddened me. He's a broken man, but he's seems like a good one. I hope he's officially gone *splat* on the bottom of his very last barrel, and that he finally gets whatever the hell help he needs.
Assistants -- where in NC are you from? I live in Southwest VA. We're neighbors! Kinda.
This dude is crazy. I heard him on Stern one time. He and Artie Lange sure had some gambling stories to swap.
ReplyDeleteIf he's clinically depressed, then he knows damn well he shouldn't be drinking. Nice support system there, pal.
ReplyDeletejeezass christ, sounds like he needs a new entourage.
ReplyDeleteTo everyone blaming his entourage and people surrounding him: it's not THEIR FAULT he's drinking. They're responsible for enabling.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried to stop a drunk from drinking or a junkie from drugging or a dambler from gambling or a cheater from cheating? Impossible. I can tell you from experience, it's heartbreaking, too.
He's not going to surround himself with healthy people who are going to tell him "no", either.
On a possibly lighter note, he looks like a thin John Candy in that photo.
i think if you're not driving, they just keep serving you, as long as you can pay.
ReplyDeleteeven in north carolina. :)
