There Are No Droughts In Oprah's World

Ahhh Oprah. Yes, it has been awhile since you entered this space. Guess you have been keeping yourself out of trouble. Nothing too shameful since the whole fake interview with Tom and Katie. You know the two parter about Risky Business and its effect on the cinema of the world. Godfather? You gave it five seconds once. Anyway, that isn't why I brought you back to the blog. Actually I didn't even bring you back her to talk about your mom either, because you know, parents are parents, and just because she owes $150K to a clothing store is none of my business. Instead of letting it get to the point of a lawsuit though, it would have been nice maybe to write the poor woman a check. I mean you probably have that much in the cushions in your couch.

No, the reason I brought you here today Oprah is to talk to you about your water usage. Apparently you like to water your lawn a bunch. Now, I understand you don't have a lawn in your Chicago condo, so this is directed more towards your home in Montecito which is Santa Barbara for those of you not familiar with the area. Oprah has about 40 acres at her house there which she uses infrequently. Despite rarely being there, she still managed to use over 10 million gallons of water in 2006 and again in 2007. That's right. 10 million gallons. Now, you might say hey, what does it matter?

Well, the rest of the county has been instructed to reuse shower water, and take other drastic measures, Oprah sits on her throne and won't even meet with county officials about her water use.

“They won’t see us,” explained water district manager Tom Mosby. “They’re very private, and trying to get in has proved very difficult.”

Uh huh. Now, lets say that you or I decided to start using 10 million gallons of water a year and the government wanted a word with us, do you think we would be able to avoid them? Hell no. So what makes Oprah so damn special? Fine, if Oprah isn't in town, meet with someone else. How low on the Harpo totem pole do you have to go before someone can actually meet with "everyday people?" Is there not anyone who sits at the right hand of Oprah who can talk to mortals?

This is the kind of crap that just makes celebrities look even more spoiled and pretentious than they already are. When you start ignoring the government, and stop caring about what every other person is having to do to survive in the county, then you know something has to give.

Now, lest you think that things were like this on Oprah's property were like this before she moved in, let me tell you what it used to be like. Since Oprah moved into what she calls, "Promised Land" the water usage has doubled. Doubled. Apparently Oprah must like practicing walking on water or something.

  1. Water usage is something that I have taken up as one of my token causes. Maybe it's because I live in the heart of the drought, Georgia. Poor Lake Lanier is still 16 feet below full pool, and it has to pump out to a good bit of the state, plus Florida and Alabama.

I actually round up my water bill to help a project that drills natural wells. I figure it's a little thing I can do since I keep aquatics. Guilty conscience, I suppose.

  2. $@(#&$#(@!!! Isn't she supposed to "care" about Africa? And half the reason we don't have peace in the Middle East is because of water rights. I hate that "clean your plate 'cause somewhere someone is starving" bullshit, but 10 million gallons is HUGE. Also, some *ssholes are actually talking about redirecting the Mississippi out to California to help with their water problems. I hate people.

  3. nope, she should NOT bail her mom out. she has more than likely told mom to stop with the outrageous spending!! mom's debt, let her work to pay for it.

she is not close to her mom anyway. dad really raised her, mom did not.

  4. Oprah is already despised by those of us who live in Santa Barbara, and this is not going to improve public opinion. We live in a constant state of drought here; a lot of people spray paint their lawns green and conserve water, but not Oprah. I don't know what it is like to take a shower without buckets to catch any drops that don't make it to my skin, and Oprah uses 10.7 million gallons (up from 10.6 million last year) to water her property. I guess her many dogs have to have soft grass to romp on. No matter how little time she spends here, it is too much.

Maybe they should shut down her water to see if that catches her Highness attention.

  8. Remember when Celine Dion used 6.5 million gallons and then blamed it on a burst pipe.

What's Oprah going to blame it on?? Two years in a row??

Even if she can easily pay her water bill, the point is that California is not just in a water shortage crunch but a full-blown crisis.

  9. Oprah needs to take the water situation seriously. Are they fining her? My county (also in drought) would assess massive penalties for going over our household allotment.

As far as her mom, her mom should take care of herself. $150K on clothing is nuts. Oprah shouldn't be used as a bank for her irresponsible relatives.

  10. Just curious: how do you reuse shower water? It would be dirty, or at least soapy, no?

We don't recycle grey water (yet; we may have to soon), what we do is put buckets in the shower to catch the excess and use that water for pets, plants, moping the floor, etc. If Oprah doesn't find the shut-off valve very soon we might take citizen action and go over to her place and do it for her. This abuse of a precious substance during the worst drought of the last 100 years is nothing short of criminal. The hatred for Oprah in Santa Barbara is massive.

  12. hasn't santa barbara been in serious water problems for years?
here in palmdale, we're right next to the aqueduct, and it was only last year they started to threaten us with fines. we totally looked into fake lawn for the back yard, now i really wish we had done it, expense be damned.
why doesn't the city/county just shut off her main??

i've hated her holier than thou attitude for many, many years. somebody really needs to bring her ass down a couple of notches.

  13. I distinctly recall one of the few times I caught her show in recent years, she was talking about how difficult it was for some people in Africa to get water and how she now doesn't leave the faucet running when she brushes her teeth. I guess the faucet in the bathroom isn't running but elsewhere...

  14. Dreadpirate --

We do reuse our grey water. My county (again, in Georgia, so nowhere near Oprah) has mandated that all dishwashing liquid must be, at minimum, "green-friendly." We're told we should wash dishes in tubs and then either gently pour it onto our lawns and plants, or funnel it into outdoor sprayers.

I also do the bucket-in-the-shower bit that Reese was mentioning. I use that for my turtles' tank after letting it settle.

We fine heavily around here, even the super rich.

  15. ah, finally some can see who she really is....it's about time! Two-faced, ungrateful, and elitist...that about sums her up! now Everyone, stop supporting her!

  16. She's a pig, with way too much money and influence for everyone's own good. Think for yourselves and don't just listen to this woman.

She had to know that Santa Barbara is in a almost constant drought state, why would you insist on English gardens when nature low water type xeroscaping is what is needed. What an elitist PIG.

  17. Is that the house she saw while driving around and rang the bell and asked the owners how much he would sell her the house for fully furnished? I never liked that story. Made her seem so spoiled.

  18. The county or the city should be allowed to shut off or severely restrict this type of water usage. This is just an obscene waste of public resources.

  19. You should see the numbers that Tommy Lee Jones puts up for water usage in San Antonio. Believe he is in the water waster Hall of SHAME...

"It turns out that Tommy Lee Jones is one of Texas's biggest water wasters, the eighth-largest water consumer in San Antonio. Ecorazzi can't find any explanation for why he's using 128,139 gallons per month, and we should take note of the fact that the city is under year-round water restrictions. The water cops are on the way.

This is sort of a big deal in drought-ravaged Texas.

  21. That house is just so impractical. It must be a pain to carry groceries in from the car after shopping.

  22. Desert landscaping can be breathtakingly beautiful. The only reason to have a garden like that is to show off how rich you are that you can ignore mother nature. (Mrs. Nature always wins in the end though!)
