Designing, Copying, Same Difference

So, did you see that Rachel Bilson's new clothing line for DKNY Jeans was released last week? Yep, and according to the press release, Rachel actually designed all of the pieces herself. No help from anyone. Well, not help as in someone doing the sketches for her, but maybe help as in she went through her closet and copied other dresses.

As first reported, on fashionista.com, Rachel has apparently drawn inspiration for her clothing line from clothes she has already worn. The green dress on the left is a dress she wore from a very small Bangkok designer. The one on the right is one of her "original" pieces for the DKNY Jean collection. I guess it is original in the sense that it is a different color.

I could see Rachel saying something like this, "I just get inspiration from everything in life, and then just take out my pad and I sketch. Sometimes, it's like, I get a vision, of like clothes that I can see on me and how they would look. It's like, somehow I've already worn them."

Now, if another designer did this who was in the employ of DKNY they would not doubt be fired. As it is, the Thai designer, will probably file suit and Rachel will have some explaining to do.

  1. Didn't Kate Moss do the same thing a while ago? She "produced" a line of clothes that looked exactly like the ones she already worn.

  3. Aw, p.m., leave the poor guy alone - he's posting like mad this morning, probably 'cause he's got a ton of work to do. I'd rather have lots of posts with errors than one or two perfect ones!!! :)

BOO! But yeah, wouldn't be the first time this has happened. I hear Kate Moss' scaggy cigarette burnt and semen encrusted "frocks" get remade all the time, like you said Cheryl.

  7. I'm tired of all these actresses who are wannabe "fashion designers." It's so phony. There are so many legitimate designers with REAL talent - like the very small Bangkok designer that she knocked off.

  8. she's just doing exactly what kate moss does. although i bet when bilson drops of the clothes she wants copies of at dkny they are not covered in cigarette burns and suspicious white stains, like kate does.

lol truer words never spoke. Assuming that you can design because you wear fantastic dresses that were picked out for you all the time is like assuming you can paint because you've seen pretty pictures in a gallery before.

Yeah not so much Enty. Unfortunately they ALL copy each other. My best friend works as a designer in NYC and used to go buy items, per her boss' instruction, to copy and tweak for their own collection. Just check out the major lines when they first come out and you will see what I mean.

  14. That dress is a copy and she thought she'd get away with it. Lots of them 'pinch' ideas, but be careful you can't be sued by your daylight robbery- probably the difference in the reproduced look, Princess B.

If the Thai designer took this to court, they'd have a good claim- it's too similar in shape and detail (only the collar studding detail is different, basically!).

    THIEF!!

  15. She's an actress. She's NOT a designer. Not a good move, Rachel.
