Steven Adler, formerly of Guns N' Roses who just got done filming Celebrity Rehab and was supposed to be in the spin off show Sober Living was arrested last night for allegedly being in the possession of narcotics and being under the influence of drugs. In addition to the above charges he also had a warrant out for his arrest on other charges.
I know rehab is a hit and miss thing and that most people do relapse, but I'm wondering if this Celebrity Rehab thing is a good idea. It just doesn't seem like the show has really helped anyone and all it is doing is giving people who really need help the idea that rehab doesn't work. Sure, rehab doesn't always work but to put that squarely in the face of people who need it hardly seems like the best advertisement for getting people into rehab.
I think another problem is that the celebrities who volunteer to be on the show are not exactly A list celebrities and therefore have really bottomed out because of drugs. These are people who already had multiple chances and were not able to kick drugs or else they would have probably regained something of their career and not been at a point where they would need to go on the show to try and salvage their career.
The only people this shows seems to be helping are the producers and Dr. Drew.
No success stories? Surely you jest!
ReplyDeleteWhat about Jeff Conaway?
I was actually quite sad to hear about this. I was a huge fan back in the day.
ReplyDeleteStill working on that Slash book by the way...*L*
I hate the idea of this show, and I refuse to watch it. Rehab is far too serious to be made into a reality show.
ReplyDeleteYou want a rehab show? Try Intervention. Emmy nominated. Very good. Deals with real people, who get to go to top-notch facilities on A&E's dime.
ReplyDeleteI still think it's a good thing to have on tv, despite the premise of D list "stars" and reality washouts performing as if in a circus. It still drives home how much WORK rehab is and how things like interpersonal relations and family ties have everything to do with an addict's success or failure with recovery.
ReplyDeleteThe thing with Steve Adler is that GNR kicked HIM OUT after the first album (in the day) because he was too fucked up! Seriously, that's some nth degree of fuckupidness if Axl Rose circa 1989 kicked you to the curb because you couldn't keep your drinking under control! Because the rest of the band were such stellar members of society, you know. Sober as schoolboys. Uh-huh.
P.S.- Wow, so he wasn't really blond afterall? Huh. Whaddayaknow?
rehab only works for a very small amount of people and quite frankly is these celebs want to get their drug on after go right ahead.
ReplyDeleteconsidering how fucking celeb obsessed we are its refreshing to see that these people have probs just like us and maybe it will be a wake up call for someone watching going through the same thing. teens think being famous is a joy ride..maybe this is what they need to see that fame and money also bring drugs and drama.
addicts will do drugs weather we turn the camera on them or not.
I only recently saw a couple reruns of Celebrity Rehab and was totally repulsed by what became of Jeff Conaway. I don't have any firsthand experience with addiction so it's tough for me to wrap my head around what they go through, but I'm not convinced Celebrity Rehab is set up with the participants best interests at heart. It seems more like the public is getting a first row seat to watch the wreck as it unfolds.
ReplyDeleteKristen, I'm with you about Intervention. That show leaves you feeling exhausted after watching it. I saw the one with the lead singer from Days of the New and I was floored by what's become of him! So sad...
Sigh... Apart from his fame-whorism, Dr. Drew is so awesome. I am sad he is no longer on his pedestal of perfection. :(
ReplyDeletedr drew has a nice bod. real talk.
ReplyDeleteActually, I can think of one sucsess story from the first Celebrity Rehab. Brigget Neilson(sorry, can't spell for shit). She cut out the drinking there, then after rehab, quit smoking ciggaretts. That's why she's having all that plastic surgery now, to correct years of abuse. I wish I could quit smoking.........
ReplyDeleteAlso, on Intervention....... love it!!!!
how long are those 'celebrities' really there? rehab used to be a standard 30 day thing. a lot of programs know now that's not long enough and go for up to 90 days with a stay at a sober living facility for those who need it. i doubt any of those assholes from the show did it for the right reasons to start with.
ReplyDeletei mean they never went to rehab until there was a way they could do it on TV?
Actually, I spoke to Dr. Pinsky about the show and believe that he is 100% wholeheartedly doing this show to help people- both those on the show and people who are watching. Many of the people who went on the show were penniless and/or homeless. Think about the message this show sends to kids who get an opposing & awful message from seeing Lindsay Lohn and Britney Spears and Courtney Love fail and fail again, but face no consequences....Dr. Drew's the man.
ReplyDeleteAdler is a mess. Dude already had a friggin stroke and he still can't get off the dope.
ReplyDeleteWhich goes to prove yet again, an addict is an addict is an addict. When you had the world by the tail, all the money you could want and a future - you threw it all away for drugs.
ReplyDeleteYou clean up, and clean up, all your money, your reputation and finally your talent, all gone. And yet you can't stop. It's not even that you don't want to - simply in the light of day when you see what you threw away, you can't stay sober. And you never will.
Steve Adler is now a cautionary tale, and a footnote in music history. A fool on a television show that provides some much needed income.
I can't watch celeb reality shows like Dancing with the Stars or the magic ones, so terrible. But I really got into Celebrity Rehab. I listened to Love Lines in the 90's as a tortured teens and Dr. Drew's voice was so soothing, and still is. I am tots. buying what he is selling. I also had quite the crush on Mr. Adler in the 80's
ReplyDeleteYes Jeff Conway and Daniel Baldwin are total asshats.
ReplyDeleteBut it is conducted at a respected facility the Dr. Pinsky is actually affiliated with. They had some great no bs counselors/nurses. Shelley was an ex-prostitute and serious addict. Bob Forrest was infamous in Hollywood for his addiction. They don't coddle these folks.
Yes relapse happens so much in addiction. I did coursework for certification and have too much personal experience. Some people are in 40 times.
Things I did think were positive about the show -- it did show the reality of physical withdrawal, the effect on families. And Pinsky does try to get to the root causes in addiction. Many folks are dual diagnosis; they abuse as a way to cover up depression, or other problems. It's a form of self-medicating.
Now I'd rather have a hole in my head than do therapy in TV or in public. It's a very private thing. Even if they all didn't have right reasons, if it helped one person, it's all right by me.
Sorry for the long post, but as a final note when Jessica Sierra relapsed and was arrested Pinsky went to court in Florida, testified for her, and got her transferred back to the facility. She's in a much more intensive treatment section and will not be in CR2. I give him props for that.
i did watch several episodes of the show. i kinda thought that dr. drew was a quack, (i'd never heard of him before), but realized this WAS tv and was edited for entertainment purposes.
ReplyDeletei really felt for jeff conway. besides the recreational drugs, he's in real physical pain, and i guess after he left he broke his back (?) or something which just adds to it. plus his girlfriend was also an addict and always trying to sneak stuff in. it was really, really sad.
