Sex, A Broken Toe, And The Tony's.

I don't know if you noticed it last night at the Tony Awards, but Mary Louise Parker had a broken toe. I know, I know, you didn't watch them either. Honestly, I bet most everyone didn't even know they were on. You may have flipped through all the channels and said to yourself, "hey, the Tony's," but you didn't know they were there before you flipped.

I actually used to enjoy watching the Tony Awards, but then I realized all the awards went to the most popular shows. If something like that happened in the movies, you would see Star Wars and Spiderman and Adam Sandler cleaning up. Last night I think South Pacific won something like 7 awards. Ummm. How many times can one play win awards. What? It goes away for five years, and then can come back and win some more and do that for eternity? Hardly seems like a ticket to finding new and original shows for audiences.

Anyway, I digress. Ahhh who cares. I had this big long thing planned about Mary Louise Parker and her broken toe because there just is not much going on today. Oh, you want to know how she broke it? Well she was filming a sex scene for Weeds and was into it so much that she slammed her foot up against the bed frame thereby breaking her big toe.

If she is this into it in her show, can you imagine what she's like in real life? The director used the footage and if he's smart he should time it and wait for that scream which you know must have come out of her mouth when she broke the toe. Now that's acting.

  1. I think Broadway plays that are "remakes" of Broadway plays shouldn't qualify for current Tony's. I mean really, South Pacific??? Shit, we did that play in high school - and I'm old!

And is there no new material out there for plays that they have to rehash something from 50+ years ago?? What is "art" about that?

  2. Enty - that's exactly what I did - after watching two of my fave shows - "The Girls Next Dorr" and "Lisa Williams - Life Among the Dead", I was looking through my guide and said"Hey! The Tonys!" lol. And in the 8 minutes I watched it South Pacific won, like 3 awards. Bor-ing.

  3. In the first part of "The Two Towers" when Aragorn, et.al. are tracking the Uruk-hai, they come across burned remains. Thinking the Hobbits are dead, Viggo Mortenson kicks a helmet and (yep) breaks his toe. Peter Jackson used the footage and the accompanying scream in the film.

  4. If the revivals weren't eligible, then what's the point of new talent taking on classic roles and singing some of the greatest songs of all time? They have their own category so it doesn't hurt. "In The Heights" won and it's a new show (the number performed last night was really good). Obviously I watched as I usually do every year, but I had to channel flip between the Lakers' game.

  5. Okay, so Mary Louise Parker had an excuse for walking carefully. What was Marissa Tomei's excuse? Big dress with a long train? Or too many pre-show tequila shots? She looked bombed.

  6. This post makes me excited, not because of any Tony related news or anything, but because I was pretty sure I had seen the last episode of "Weeds". I rented season 3 last week and honestly thought that was the end of it. But apparently not. Happy times in the Hellfire household. And, possibly, time to get some extra channels.

  7. Who can even afford to go to a show anymore? My kids have seen more shows than me lately on school & camp trips!

  9. So glad GYPSY won for Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti, and Boyd Gaines. I saw it about a month ago and it was incredible.

  11. My daughter visited NYC two weeks ago for the first time and saw a Broadway show "Spring Awakening". She said it was absolutely horrible and embarrassing. I'm sure she'd rather have seen South Pacific!
