Oprah Wants You To Know She Is Richer Than You

Its been awhile since I've had the opportunity to get on Oprah for something. I think it must be all of about six weeks or so since she had Tom "Napoleon Complex" Cruise on her show. Anyway, I have let Oprah be alone during her 21 day Vegan cleanse, because well, I don't think anyone wants to get near her when she's cleansing.

As is often the case, I find myself perusing Oprah's blog late at night, because frankly, I have no life and so I like to find others that do and pick on them. I believe Sunday was Day 21 of her cleanse and she wrote a little blog about day 20. It was probably the most pretentious 8 paragraphs I have read in a long time. What makes it more galling is that Oprah is always trying to show that she is in touch with the "everyday people" of the world. She isn't. She used to be. I admire her more than anything for the way she has succeeded in life, but she needs to be honest with herself that the only relating to "everyday people" she does now is the one hour she does her show each day.

Here is what really ticked me off in her blog.

Day 21…yes, I want some wine. Bordeaux 82. Just one glass at sunset, almost broke down and had a glass.

Does anyone have any idea what a 1982 Bordeaux goes for? It varies, but the average price per bottle is about $600. Now, instead of rubbing her wealth in the noses of people who don't even make $600 per week, why couldn't she have just skipped those two words. Why? Does she have to prove to the world that she has more money than them? That she is some kind of wine expert and that if you ever get a spare $600 sitting around that you rush right out and buy Oprah's favorite? What was her point?

Her average viewer and blog reader will never taste a 1982 Bordeaux. Oprah doesn't care. She wants you to know she can and that you are a lesser person for not being like her. Honestly I don't care if she sucks down 82 Bordeaux all night long. She makes enough and if I made what she makes I would probably stop buying the cheap stuff also. But, I also wouldn't rub it into the faces of everyone who couldn't.

At this point in her career, it just feels like Oprah is saying to the world that what she does is best, and you need to do what she does or else you are crap. The only time she ever admits a mistake is when the entire world calls her on it and then she doesn't blame herself, but the person that misled her.

You read it for yourself. Maybe it is just me, but I can just see her dictating the words to an assistant who is writing the words with a quill and lamb's blood ink on 200 year old parchment saying this is the word of Oprah. Then some poor schlep who makes $7 an hour types it in to the computer and Oprah's missive gets sent to the world. The original is then sealed in an airless chamber awaiting the creation of the Oprah Bible.

  2. I will never purchase anything she recommends, watch her show, or read her magazine. There, I had my say.

  3. Adrian, it pisses me off when she recommends a book that I already like. :)

  4. mooshkie--that is why I try never to read or listen to anything that has to do with her. I don't want her to spoil my few pleasures. Next, she'll start commenting here, & then I will really be up the creek without a paddle!

  5. She's always saying shit like that - "I was running down the hallway in my Uggs the other day..." - who cares if you're wearing Uggs? Was it REALLY that important to mention that?

  6. OK, so did u guys see the rumor that our ben "favorite for every US blind" affleck may be getting a divorce- i think that is sad if it is true...

and oh oprah... sad little oprah she so jumped the shark when she started campaigning for obama

  7. I think if she mentions a brand, they must send her a shitload of stuff for free. I'm going to try walking around & shouting out what I'm wearing...then I will check my mail & see if anyone sends me anything.

  8. unless ur famous (even if that means famous for nothing) then they (designers/ brands, etc) may send you a cease and desist order!

  9. I too admire Oprah for what she's done with her life but I think she's lost the reality of "the little people" years ago. She now comes across as superior and judgemental. It frightens me that just by having someone on her show the world then takes that person seriously (Dr.Phil). The fact that one person can have such an impact on so many scares the hell out of me.....

  10. What if I yell "I may be famous, PLEASE send me free things?

By the way, Brooke's auction is going up in a few hours--it has been on tons of forums! Good Luck-- I will go on ebay later-- have to go entertain my kids-- I hope I don't miss anything funny or any Ben updates.

  12. Adrian-

I just got thru entertaining now it's nap time.

i think oprah sits on top of her money laughing at middle america.

  13. No, she sits on top of her money and TRASHES the working poor.

When asked why she didn't open a school such as the one she opened in Africa, here in the States, she said that American kids only want material things and only care about the latest sneakers and cell phones....that, basically, the children of her CORE AUDIENCE were ungrateful and materialistic.

Yeah. The woman who has an entire episode dedicated to "her favorite things" which are invariably overpriced had the unmitigated gall to say that about innocent children whose worst crime is that their parents have no money.

Now, I'll have a glass of Chateau Rothschild, as long as I'm allowed to break the bottle over her head when I'm done.

  14. Adrian - In Oprah's case, I think the plug is pre-paid. No upfront moola, no mention.

  15. She wants to maintain the bogus image that "I'm in touch with 'everyday people'" but, at the same time, wants to let "them" know she's not one of "them" ("Bordeaux 82") so don't get too chummy. Name-dropping a wine and vintage is a cheap way no-class people to show they have "class." I'll bet you could pour her wine out of a box, tell her it's "Bordeaux 82," and she would never know.

I've never liked Opa for some reason never felt she was a good journalist. I've always felt she has to have done something to get where she is at their is no way she did it on her own.

She is always talking where she is coming from and blah blah blah. But I think that is all talk don't think she feels it in her heart anymore. She is more into the money market and what power she gets out of it.

I don't watch her show, don't like her book recommendations.

  17. featherbell: You nailed it.

My SIL is like that. Except that she mispronounces half the expensive things she flaunts. Kinda defeats the purpose.

  18. She's been on a downward slope with me for a few years now. It's so upsetting I might have to have a glass of MD 20/20. I'm fancy like that.

  19. how about a round of Drank on me?
You included Opie, you need to slow your roll.

  20. Going vegan is easy when someone is doing the cooking for you.

And I love how Oprah mentions in her blog all the vegetables
    "she's" growing!

If I forget to defrost the meat, no one's doing it for me. I guess in this case, if I forget to buy the tofu, no one's going to do it for me.

    But hey -- I guess I would if I had Oprah's money.

  23. Yay!!! Something we can all agree on! Oprah sucks.

  24. The only people I know who watch Oprah are over 70--both of them.
I am happy not to be that moronic.

  25. I can't stand her. Every time I have watched her show in the past she said variations of "Are they as rich as me?" for different situations. Yea, we know you are rich. Horray. Now go away.

  26. JW12--was it nap time for you or your kids? lol! Mine are way too old for napping, but I sometimes feel like I'm going to pass out!

  27. I have poured bogus or mixed wine while waiting tables. Most people can't tell the difference. You get busy, the bottle is empty, a bottle of something else has just enough in it...... As long as the wine is presented right and the expert has a chance to smell it and swirl it and the wine hasn't soured, everything is cool. Same thing with vodka. Smirnoff can be substituted for most any kind.

  28. Ummmmm.....which '82 Bordeaux might she be referring to? There's more than one, ya know....

That said, I can't stand her. And for some reason I see her running for office in the next 15 years.

  30. Stop The Presses! Lock Your Freezers! Oprah Ends Her 'Vegan' Experiment!
IF YOU ARE AMONG THE SHEEP WHO HAVE CLICKED ON STORIES REGARDING OPRAH SAMPLING A VEGAN DIET FOR THREE WEEKS, CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING PART OF THE PROBLEM.

This is what passes for news? Let me correct you: this is example of the incestuous nepotism that America's corporate media passes for reporting. You are being fooled.

At last count, Oprah has business ties with CBS, ABC, Oxygen, Discovery, the Food channel, Hearst Publishing, the entire publishing industry save Random House (that tie was shattered into a 'Million Little Pieces'). And these are the ones that are are obvious. Not to mention the bumps she produces for the tabloids, the celebrity mags and the producers of her "favorite" products.

Now she's expanding her power to the White House and will soon lord over the Lincoln Bedroom. Oprah does little without personal gain. So I congratulate her on risking the wrath of her audience for backing Barack Obama. Let's remind the media to keep an eye out for the deals Mr. Obama will make for her when he grabs the throne.

Whether you think Oprah is "good or diabolically evil," she has every right to pursue any business or personal relationship she likes. It's the media that has the obligation to connect the dots between her relationships. How can they fulfill their duty when they count on her to sell for them? Even the mighty New York Times has fallen victim to her wiles when The Oprah Winfrey Show cunningly renovated a cultural reporter's home. The reporter, Jesse McKinley, was ordered to reimburse the show but was allegedly quoted a price by the show far below the market value of the work. This is the insidious way TOWS works. Curiously, you can't find any mention of this moral lapse in the Times free archives. Curiouser still is that Mr. McKinley continues to cover Oprah-related matters.

Here's a viewing suggestion for you: go rent Lions for Lambs for a crash course in media manipulation. Pay close attention to the movie's last scene when Iraqi war propaganda ticks by in type while some celebrity's hijinks commands the full screen. Then see if you can continue to read the news with your eyes wide shut after watching the movie. Here's hoping not.

  31. Yeah, it's just you. Get over it. You think I give a shit that I'll never be able to drink a glass of $600 wine. Nope. I don't and you shouldn't either.

  32. Does anyone believe she has a boyfriend anymore? Does anyone even think she sleeps with Steadman? I stopped with this Oprah thing years ago. I find her scary, and really creepy. Like the Christmas show or that "A few of my favorite things" show, where 1% of the people watching could afford any product, and people will kill each other to be in the audience. Everything she does, including that molesting school she opened, creepy.

Tick Tick waiting for the Micheal Jackson like backlast - it's coming.
