That Sucks

As someone who has been deeply scarred for life because I didn't get to go to prom, I feel for Marche Taylor. Marche wore a dress to prom which the school said violated the dress code. Fine, got it. No problem. Marche didn't like that, but offered to put some more clothes on to hide the dress, but the school still said no.

Marche then went off and ended up in handcuffs being led out of the prom by cops. No charges were filed, but Marche didn't get to attend her prom. Look, I am all for enforcing a dress code. I don't know where it talks about prom dresses in school dress code policies, but whatever. I don't understand why the school was not willing to offer an alternative short of sending her out in handcuffs. This isn't a Friday night dance, or suspending you a day from school, it is prom, and I know that this is such a big event in the lives of most high school students. There are whole shows devoted to it on television. Dresses and parties are planned for months. This is a really big night.

Generally the event costs a great deal and involves students actually feeling like adults for a few hours. Was Marche wrong? Hell yes. Were here parents wrong? Hell yes. She shouldn't have pushed the envelope so far, but that is what teenagers have been doing since the beginning of time. I think her parents should have said something, but I also think the school should have let her change or wear a jacket, or something.

Although she will have a great prom story, I doubt fifteen years from now she will be thrilled to show off her photo in handcuffs.

  1. That "dress" is brutal and she should be thankful that they refused to let her in and make a huge fool of herself.

  2. She'll get over it. It was my senior prom this year and where was I? Having my 7th surgery because a doctor made a mistake and crippled me three years ago at fifteen.

    Worse things have happened.
And that dress is definitely one of them.

  3. I agree that the dress isn't appropriate for prom, but they could've just sent her home and told her to change.

  4. that's gross. i cannot believe that anyone would dress so tacky and ghetto to a prom. if she wants to act like trash then she should be treated like it.

  6. She was definately stupid. What in the world would make her think that hideous scrap of fabric is okay to wear to a school function??

There must be more to this story. I can't imagine the school/cops would go to the liability of putting a kid in cuffs w/o cause. Maybe she only offered to change clothes after she threw a fit...

  7. Wow, KS, you sound a little harsh. Who taught you how to use the word 'ghetto'? Do you use it to describe everything or just anything dealing with minorities, more specifically black people? Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  8. wouldn't that make it your prejudice, nate? The fact that you assume that's what KS means when they use the word ghetto.

  9. Please if Prom was so important to her, she would have followed the written dress code regarding prom that was passed out and she would have worn underwear. Brittany wanna be.

  10. I'm with Nate. I've never heard the word, "ghetto" applied to a white person.

Always hear/read "Trailer Trash" to describe low class whites.

Black, white, brown, red, yellow, green... that dress is a low class sleezy disaster.

  11. I was on her side until I read that she wasn't wearing underpants. There are hygiene issues, people!

There was a girl at my prom whose dress showed 2" of butt cheek. It was amusing, but a bit distracting. At least she had on undies.

  12. plenty of white people are ghetto...and not for nothing but the term is used in music and i believe "ghetto fabulous" is a style...if a non-white person uses it will it be non-prejudice? i didnt know some of u guys can tell a person's race by their comment...i wish i had your talent!

  13. p.s. I actually thought the dress was really cute! Especially with the train that you can kinda see behind her in the picture.

There IS more to this story. She was causing a scene and getting belligerent, and while she did offer to cover up, she wasn't wearing panties!! Black or white, ghetto or white trash, bottom line: it was trashy, period. Lack of class doesn't recognize color.

  15. Oh my goodness. You have got to be kidding me. She missed her prom. I doubt they threw cuffs on her for purely the fashion violation, she threw a fit she wasn't allowed in, and the "dress" (I use that term loosely) was specially made for the event. She wasn't wearing panties- bad enough. I think it's worse that they KNEW she wasn't wearing panties. Ha! She was barely clothed. I can't believe this is even a new story. I think it is hilarious.

  16. it's not ghetto or low class its SLUTTY.

who shows up for prom in a 6 inch skirt and no panties?
    professionals!

ps EL I never went to prom either, got into a bad car accident the week b4. it does suck.

  17. ooops... I can't believe this is a NEWS story.

  18. I really don't give a rats ass about this, to be honest.

Yeah, the school could have said that she could go home, put on something more acceptable, and return to the prom.

But then, she could have decided to not show up looking like the meth whore of the month too. Jesus. we've seen Pamela Anderson Lee dressed more acceptably than this. Come on.

So, I can't get riled into a state of frenzy about this. Sorry Ent. I just don't care about this one.

  19. tbh, Paris Hilton wore a dress much like it to an award show...probably more than once.
and if thats the bar, theres really not much lower to go. but yeah, its sad that people like, look up to that.

but from what i've heard this girl was getting rowdy and causing a disturbance, thus possibly ruining OTHER peoples good times who also paid the money and dressed tastefully.

Laws are made to protect the innocent lol (not saying that bad taste is against the law, but I don't think I'd have been happy seein some Vag at the prom. That is indecent exposure :x eugh.
There were some girls with FUG dresses at my prom. oh, and this kid wore a kilt with no underwear, but his date brought some backup with her in case it was an issue.)

  20. Most schools are now zero tolerance, not "one more chance." I've never heard of anyone being given a chance to go home and change and come back for a second inspection.

A few years ago a local high school made the news because they were doing a panty check on all girls before they could go to the school dance in the gym.

Trashy, ghetto, slutty -- choose your adjective, but they all boil down to one image, and one image only...

High school is not what it used to be, that's for sure!

  21. I'm sorry, but you can't even consider that a "dress".

  22. A panty liner would have covered her breasts better. This dress is pathetic. Quit being a frickin' enabler - she was in the wrong.

Let me tell you something. I'm white and my car is G-H-E-T-T-O. I'm not complaining because she does run, but yeah its ghetto. I don't know where my next car is coming from, either. I wish that Pimp My Ride dude would show up at my door.

White people can totally be ghetto.

  24. i agree B love. its slang now meaning it could be anywhere anybody. i live in the ghetto in my town and we're all white.

with real estate the way it is you better all get used to it cuz no one can afford the fancy neighborhoods. one love! lol.

  25. oh jeez nate and ms, please make this a race issue. Ghetto is ghetto is ghetto. black people live in the ghetto, white people live in the ghetto, so do hispanics!! maybe even asians!!! and yes, when i see white kids dressed in wifebeaters and baggy pants and drinking iced tea out of a milk jug, i call them ghetto too. happy??

please quit pulling the racecard over the word ghetto. If i had used the N-word, THEN u could get upset.

  27. i also said she acted like trash, is that ok??? i mean i know people usually use that in the context of white trash, but somehow you two let that slide

  28. That girl knew exactly what the hell she was doing. She deserves everything she got.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well, it wasn't even a dress. It was one of my Grandmama's hankies.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I saw the whole news story - she WAS wearing underwear. The school accused her of not having any on. Needless to say, if I were a parent, I wouldn't even let my daughter THINK about wearing something that revealing.

Is her mother wearing the other half of her dress lol.

When I saw this on the news I thought she was a hooker the way she was dress. When they said she was going to her prom in that think I was thinking she was slutty.

there is a video news story you should all check out on you tube...
she didn't offer to put on more clothes, she was just going to cover more by wrapping the train around her middle - thereby lifting her skirt even higher. They asked her to go home and she wouldn't.

and pllllease! i doubt she cares that she missed prom - she gets WAY more attention this way.

    ReplyDelete
  34. She was causing a scene and wouldn't leave. They had to cuff her. Hideous dress, by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. True, a parent should never let their kid wear that to prom, but there are lots of crappy parents out there who don't care about their kids and let them do whatever. Its a wonder there aren't more kidnapping with the way some people watch their little kids in public.

I grew up in a crappy white trash town where an alarming # kids in my classes in school would talk about doing drugs with their parents. at 14! Its really sad and just one example of why so many people end up screwed up adults I think.

Anyway, I guess I have mixed feelings for the prom girl.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Awww, that poor mixed up kid. I'm sure she, and most of her peers, if not also her family, thought that was a perfectly acceptable dress and that she looked "hot" in it. How utterly ridiculous that she was led away in handcuffs. Had they let her in the worst that would have happened would have been what exactly? That she'd have wound up with photos of a regrettable outfit? That teenage males would get "riled" up? Heaven forbid... This is just one more reason for me to loath public schools and police officers...

    ReplyDelete
  37. She should have been denied. Handcuffs? More to the story.
Ent I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but it wasn't just her prom. It was all of the other girls (who dressed appropriately)prom as well.
Wanna dress like it's girls gone wild? Cool, save it for college spring break.

Again, handcuffs? More to the story

    wtf?
Where does it say she was a docile lamb when she was told it was unacceptable. If handcuffs were used, odds are there was a throwdown.

    Just a guess

All I know is that if I were attending that prom and spent a bunch of money I worked for all year to get an awesome dress and go to the salon for hair and stuff, then some chick shows up like it's a bad ripoff of Brett Michaels reality show, I would be pissed too.

Again, fairly certain the cops don't toss handcuffs on high school students lightly.
It wasn't just her big night. All of the other students are allowed the same big night.

    Zero sympathy over here.
