Have a kid? They want to get a tattoo? Tell them they can have one when they turn 60. Susan Sarandon just got two tattoos recently done on her 60th birthday. To me, that is the perfect time to get them done. When you are 20 you are not going to have the same body as when you are 60 and so that belly button tattoo you got at 20 has now spread and become that odd discoloration around your bloated beer belly.
20 is also too young because you are not going to be the same person or probably be with that significant other who convinced you to get a tattoo in the first place because they get horny when they see it. My advice is to find someone who gets horny knowing you have a job. And that they have one too.
I like the way that Susan is honoring her life and what has happened as opposed to something that can change every six months either resulting in someone getting a new tattoo or wondering why on earth they got one in the first place.
I'm glad tats are becoming kind of been there and done that because if I hear one more person say why they regret getting their tattoo I think I will go insane. I regret having to see a bunch of people with suns and moons and fishes and stars and every generic Asian character inked on their bodies.
If you are going to do it, have it mean something to you and that it will still remain important to you 50 years from now. Susan Sarandon got it right.
agreed
ReplyDeleteShe usually does get it right. Please notice the lack of Botox - and she's still stunning, much more so than those with the frozen faces.
ReplyDeleteSusan Sarandon has really come a long way from Rocky Horror.
ReplyDeleteI got my tat at 29 - thought about it for a good year before that - had many temporary tats over that time to decide where I wanted it. I ended up with a lizard for Jim Morrison the Lizard King. I also made sure my kids knew how long I thought and planned for it - hoping that if they chose to get one they chose that route as well.
ReplyDeletenow you can be tattooed with temporary ink that lasts about a year.
ReplyDeletethen if you like it, legitimate places will re-ink it with permanent ink for free.
there is no reason for unwanted ink anymore.
exactly why i am tattoo free at 34.
ReplyDeletenever found anything i liked enough to have on my body eternally. the only 2 things that will never change is my astro sign and heritage so i've thought of the pisces sign of the two fishes and a 4 leaf clover..seperately.
either way it ain't happening.
There's gonna be a lot of fun in the nursing homes down the road amongst the staff playing "Can you guess what this tattoo USED to be?"
ReplyDeleteAll the old ladies and their tramp stamps - what a laugh that will be while getting their diaper changed.
The more, the merrier, I say. I love tattoos, and I want many many many more and much much bigger!
ReplyDeleteI can't live my life NOT doing things because I'm worried I might regret it later...but that's just my personal opinion.
In my generation, only biker whores got tats. Even now there's a stigma attached to women and tattoos.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely hate, hate, hate tatoos. I can't stand the thought of anything being forever (like a husband). I had a milestone b'day last year and went to Vegas. I thought for a hot minute that I'd get a teeny tiny heart tatoo'd on my upper buttcheek or hip, I guess. Meaning being I love my ass for having made it this far in life. My bff since we were both 4 years old told me she'd kick my ass, so that was the end of my ass loving tatoo.
ReplyDeleteIf I make it to 60 like Susan, maybe I'll think about it again.
Well said Harriet!
ReplyDeleteI loathe tattoos. I can't think of a single time I've ever seen one and thought it looked attractive. Easy to understand why the tatt removal business is booming.
ReplyDeleteTattoos today are what multiple ear piercings were in the 80's -- so "in" at the time but now so dated. Sooo glad I did not get those funky ear piercings. Now they look so lesbo and 80s.
ReplyDeleteYes, I know that tattoos became mainstream in the 90s with GenX -- but still and all, ENT is right -- everyone regrets at least the first tat they ever got. And most people got them at 18.
I got one at 18 and I don't regret it. In fact, I'm thinking about adding to it. When well done I think they can be artistic and beautiful.
ReplyDeletea friend of mine got one after his 2 day old son died. the boys name, dob/dod. thats the only kind of tat i wuld ever get if i got a tat. but by god i hope i never do.
ReplyDeletewe're returning to maui this october to leave my FIL's ashes, as we did last year with my MIL's ashes. my kids are coming this time, and i'm considering sneaking away (depending how well the knee has healed) with my DIL to get a teeny tatoo with either my husband's initials or a small heart. i enjoy tats as a form of artwork, and have done mehndi (henna) for years, trying to make a business of it. but i am SO afraid of that needle!!
ReplyDeletei have been told it hurts less on a fatty part?
any suggestions?
Bunny - stick with the henna, it makes you far more interesting and unique!
ReplyDeleteBunny - I'm no expert, but I think it hurts less if you avoid hitting bone. But, it's really not that bad!
ReplyDeleteI thought you were going to say she got it right with that outfit, because I would have respectfully had to disagree.
ReplyDeletei used to want a heart on my butt so i could be a real care bear. then i thought about something from My Little Ponies, too. i think Glory's was the one i wanted: a purple shooting star complete with a comet tail.
ReplyDeletebut i never got them. and boy howdy, am i glad i didn't. child bearing sort of wrecked that area, ha ha!
the only tattoo i'd ever get is my dead sister's name, and i'd get it in pink ink so it wouldn't be noticeable. can't really think of anything else that would mean the same to me 20 years down the line.
SS is a hot piece of fuck, although Tim Robbins has moved on to her daughter
ReplyDeleteAnyone getting a tattoo should really think about it long and hard. I have two and I don't regret either of them. But I took a long time figuring out what I wanted and where I wanted them. And they should really mean something to you as a person. Not just something that you think is cute. Because your definitions of cute can change over time.
