Bonnaroo It Is

After totally being underwhelmed by what Coachella is offering this year, I kept hoping that Bonnaroo would be able to pick up the slack and give us something in the US to look forward to festival wise. Until yesterday, I thought I would have to just skip the whole damn thing and head off to the UK for some lineups that actually have an impact.

Bonnaroo came through though. Besides having almost every act from Coachella on their lineup, Bonnaroo also added some impact names and some names that will sell tickets. I will be shocked if Coachella sells out this year. Oh, they might call it a sell out, but if it is, it will be because they reduced the number of tickets to where it could sell out. I can't even talk about it because I am so disappointed. They didn't even try at all this year. All of the people they normally ask to help them, never received a call. It was like they thought that because of their reputation, they could just gets acts to beat down their door and play. It doesn't work that way and hopefully next year they will go back to the way it was. Yes, they have some good acts that I want to see, but very, very few. To give you an example. I love Tegan and Sara. Love them, love them, love them. As much as I love them, I realize that most people have not heard of them. At Coachella they are billed 15th. At Bonnaroo which they are also playing they are billed 35th.

To provide a fair comparison I have provided lineups to both festivals. If you had to choose one festival, which would you choose?

  6. I decided to skip Coachella as soon as the promised My Bloody Valentine reunion didn't pan out.... now that was a huge mistake.

Also, it's kind of pathetic that Coachella/GoldenVoice didn't even TRY this year... they just did a lot of repeats. Justice was there LAST YEAR. And Kraftwerk, as much as I love them, like 3 years ago. Sad sad sad.

  7. My husband filled in on bass for a couple of T&S shows a few years back. He said they never even talked to him.

I've only heard a couple of their songs, and they're alright I guess, but their haircuts make me angry. So angry.

uh Led Zeppelin is listed wayyyy down the list for Bonnaroo wtf??
Should that not be the HEADLINE?

I'd choose Bonnaroo easily. If only for the Janeanse Garofalo.

  10. It's LEZ Zep, the lesbian Led Zep cover band....

The LEd Zep isn't doing Bonnaroo.... unless it's a major last second surprise.

  14. Coachella has better weather and Portishead, which would tip the balance in their favor. But I'd rather skip the festival and just see one or two of the bands at an indoor show where I can see and hear them properly.

  15. Love Portishead, but HATE HATE HATE Jack Johnson (Sorry Trix). But, Bonnaroo has a better lineup.

  16. Tegan & Sara are great. I notice the Raconteurs and Death Cab are playing both gigs, so this comes down to which do I want to see more... Roger Waters doing Dark Side of the Moon or Robert Plant with T Bone Burnett?

That's a very tough call, but I've seen Plant a couple times (including with Zep), so I'd go with Coachella just for the chance to see Waters. Plus, I'm NO fan of Kanye, making Bonnaroo a little less appealing.

Jax: I feel ya on that, but trust me, look a little harder every once in awhile, and you'll find something worth it. I went to Rockfest in Longview, WA and they had Buckcherry, Seether, and Alice in Chains. Was definately worth the trip.

  18. Last week, EL reported that a HIV+ white pop singer was asked by her local health department who she had sex with so they could be notified. Last week, allegations persisted, on the backend, there was a media frenzy bidding war for the list because it contained identities of some of the most famous and richest men on planet earth. This week we are hearing, this whole story has been swept under the rug, similar to the Heath Ledger video cover-up. Fast Forward: Sky Villa has unearthed similar data. We have also been informed about a white pop princess with the package, the similarities are astounding. This is what we uncovered: One of her reps asked that the few black men she had been intimate with-be moved to the top of the list to take the focus off the white male celebrities who dominate the list. This way, a black man can be set up to be the "fall guy," if and when this sensitive information ever leaks-and be accused of infecting one of America's Sweethearts with the deadly virus. I guess her rep didn't realize, it doesn't matter what order your name is in. It's just devastating to be included on a list like this, regardless of order. The Truth: If this is the same woman, she could have gotten infected by anyone. One of our sources walked in on her at a industry party, in a bedroom, while she was bent over snorting cocaine, an anonymous sex partner was pounding her from the back without a condom. He was her dealer and she exchanged sex for drugs although she can afford to buy her narcotics but she's addicted to the thrill of anonymous sex. Who Is She?

  19. it isn't a question of better or worse: they are targetting different crowds (with some overlap).

I say Coachella hands down (it is electronic-act heavy) and am sooo pained i can't attend.

    Sasha & Emerson reunited= LEGENDARY
    MIA?
    Junkie XL?

    HELLO!??

  20. Forget them both! I'm going to ACL!! Got my ticket Monday but missed the sales last weekend and had to pay full price. But, that's OK - no problem.

Be sure to check out Groupo Fantasma at Bonnaroo. They play in town all the time. They played the Latin Grammy's behind Prince and he has them play with him if he's in the area.

No lineup yet for ACL but it's usually a combination of these plus the very best locally. Can't wait!!

  21. Coachella if I had to pick; mostly because of Portishead. I saw Love & Rockets years ago, and it wasn't that great (of course we'd seen bauhaus the year before, so maybe that has something to do w/ it). just recently saw Sasha & John Digweed (@ together as one here in LA), and was really let down; I've been a fan for years, but the set sucked.

I'm on the Coachella side of things here:

    The Streets
    Stars
    Hot Chip
    Bird and the Bee
    Cold War Kids

Mostly Stars... I missed their show here in Mpls.

Went to Mika last night, that was a lot of fun. (Unfortunately my phone takes crummy pictures).

  23. Coachella easily. The 2nd line sums it up, Portishead and Kraftwork. And there's some other British acts that I see listed on Coachella that I'd rather see. And Justice!

  24. Bonnaroo, just to see Serena Ryder again - another amazing Canadian talent!

...plus, she said she really liked my shoes :D

  25. Equation (too lazy to type it out) — Right on! See you in the thick of things.

Love Portishead, but I love my Ghostland Observatory and would love to see Kanye, Lupe Fiasco rip it out. Only thing missing is Mos Def. Then I'd be a happy little bitch.

    Bonnaroo all the way!

  26. Jax, I'm in Calgary, no Spitfires here this weekend.

Might go to Van for Turbonegro in April, if funds allow.

  27. sh*t i thought you were in Van.
I got an invite for that show too on Facebook lol. Maybe i'll see ya there.

    Spitfires are my boys!

Well, Bonnaroo is the better festival, but Coachella is going to have the Verve. But Bonnaroo is going to have Mastodon.....

What I want to know is whose penis Jack Johnson is sucking to be getting such a push at these festivals.

ENT, can you find any new photos of My Bloody Valentine?

  29. brenda he just released his new album..its all about the dollahs.

  30. Dn, Please post Mika pics. His music is like naughty children's songs.;) Plus he is a sweetheart !

  31. Gah, I'm torn....there are a lot of bands that don't overlap that I like, so I don't know which I'd have more fun at (not that I can actually go to either...).

I wonder if Bonneroo will add Leslie Feist? She does a lot of work with Broken Social Scene...must say I'm impressed with the list of Canadian talent at Bonneroo.

  32. I've been to Coachella and it's held on a polo feild, so the grounds and grass withstand the festival and retain some moisture so it feels like a mini oasis in the middle of the desert, because TRUST- It's in the middle of the desert, but I bought 2 tickets, (so spent what, a little over 3 bills?) and would go again in a heartbeat. The security was on point too- but not too tight to where you couldn't sneak in a little somethin or tailgate. (See Kraftwerk live before you die)

All said, bonaroo has a better lineup (minus Portishead), Jackie Green is rad.
