Taylor Hicks Dropped By Record Label

That didn't take long did it? Let's face it. Just because you win American Idol doesn't mean you are going to be the best selling contestant. I think everyone who watched the show two years ago knew that Taylor Hicks' music did not translate well to mainstream success. Recognizing that, America voted for him anyway and so Taylor won the record contract. His first album sold about 700,000 copies and so he suffered the fate of being the first Idol winner not to cross the 1M mark. He also had no hit singles off the album.

"Taylor is going to record on his own for the next album," said J Records publicist Liz Morentin, who did not give further details regarding Hicks.

What that means is that Taylor was probably adamant about recording songs he wanted to record and shunned any attempts at writing him songs that would sell. His new album will probably be sold on the internet only and sell about 100,000 copies if that. Taylor would be perfect for Vegas and if I was his manager, I would convince Taylor to sign some type of contract with a hotel in Vegas while he has some name recognition, otherwise it is going to be the celebrity Karaoke judging route for Taylor.

  4. I'm telling you, these fucking reality shows are no good for enriching the music industry. They are all fluff and no substance. Real music comes from hard graft and talent that goes beyond trying to make it on Tweenie Idol.

They're lightweights and they get left behind all too often. You can't make stars out of anything that moves. This is an accurate measure of what's happening to the reality industry. Quite rightly, it should be imploding because it's contributing nothing but making rich, fat men in suits even richer for having to do even less than handling blood and guts real performers with real talent.

  5. I've been saying for years that you don't want to WIN AI. You're screwed if you do. Even Kelly Clarkson didn't do shit until she sued to get out of her AI contract and only then did she have a top selling CD. The writing has been on the wall with Hicks for a while. Singing at malls? Geeze, local kids do that, don't they?

TS - Rascal Flatts played our local mall... admittedly it was the Mall of America, but still, it's a free mall show. And it was only a couple of months after they played our State Fair (where they got like 10,000 people to show).

  7. REALLY??? I'm shocked, DN! The only thing I can say in defense of my statement, though, is that Taylor didn't play the Mall of American, he played small local malls. Two different level of malls....lol.

  8. I'm sorry but Taylor reminds of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Hey that's it! He needs to sing a song titled "uh-oh fart!" and he'll totally snag another label...I can feeel it!

  9. I loved Taylor Hicks when he was on AI. That was the only season I watched, but even then I said the same thing. He needs to be a Vegas lounge singer.

I get tons of enjoyment out of watching AI now that I've discovered how much fun there is to be had at the Vote for the Worst site. Their 'photochop' thread is a riot (some are juvenile, but many are sheer genius).

I would never buy a Taylor CD, but I did get a huge kick out of his awful styling choices and spastic 'dancing'. The upcoming season of AI is packed with producer plants, so it's possible that the singing will be more endurable this year.

Ugh, did anyone actually expect that bloated, geriatic has-been-that-never-was to sell records....? Without even hearing a word he's ever spoken or sang, I get the feeling that the minute he opens his mouth, its nothing but irritating drivel.

  12. Hey I LOVE Taylor!! And if late 20's is geriatric, hand me my walker!! Thank God he is finally free of the albatross that is American Idol and can record his own music, which is really, really good! Bluesy-soul type with the whiskey tenor voice.
