Which reality-show clogged network had to change its casting procedures after a racist internal policy was leaked? Producers had an informal ban on considering cast members who were "too black." They claimed it was because darker skin tones were hard to pick up on camera.
ONTD posted this one earlier today. The hunch was Bravo since they're more image conscious.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's reality clogged w/ Project Runway, Top Chef, Top Design, Real Housewives of OC, Make me a Supermodel, etc.
Other guesses were Fox and MTV.
Could be MTV..up until Real World Australia they had black castmembers..not this time.
ReplyDeleteLast season in Denver they had 'issues' with race.
not to mention i've never seen a video on MTV...since the 80s.
Bravo doesn't show that much skin, though, except on that insipid model show (did I need another excuse to hate people under 24?)
ReplyDeleteIt has to be a network with shows that flash lots of near nakedness. MTV? They still do reality, don't they?
I think its MTV, VH1, or Bravo.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's VH1 because I Love New York and Flavor of Love are "hits."
I could see it being Bravo. I'm still pissed about how no one ever called out "Real Housewives" for being blatantly racist.
I was kinda thinking Fox.
ReplyDeleteGammagirl, do tell about "Real Housewives". I don't watch the show, so I'm out of the loop on that one.
ReplyDeleteLast season a mini controversy broke out when Vicki referred to one f her clients as "The Chinamen." Ooops
ReplyDeleteThis season, one of her kids made a really inappropriate joke about interracial couples.
I think blatantly racist might have been an exaggeration on my part, but that kind of ignorance in this day and age frustrates me to no end.
they are all so reality clogged. but i like the bravo guess...
ReplyDeleteand the upcoming real housewives of nyc are also all white. i guess there are no black housewives in new york...
bummer.
i think it is bravo because all the other shows have several blacks on their show and they have no regular shows of any kind that is not a reality show....
ReplyDeleteBravo! Even the commercials.
ReplyDeleteThe best guess on ONTD was "BET." LOL! And apparently not so far-fetched. I guess they have a habit of hiring lighter skinned people.
ReplyDeleteI think it's BET, because for 106&Park they literally segregate the audience. I know, I've had friends go there and tell me all about it. The darker skinned audience members are set in the back, and the fairer skinned people are put in the front.
ReplyDeleteMorgen dorffer, that's majorly fucked up. You mean Don Cheadle would be seated in the back and Halley Berry in the front? You'd think BET would be above that bullshit.
ReplyDeleteNo, Gammagirl, I think you were fair in your assessment. The Housewives from Coto de Caucasian show on Bravo is racist as all get-out. The only show at all on Bravo with anyone of ethnicity at all is the show about Ellen LaVar's hair salon. And a couple of the wedding-reality shows.
ReplyDeletei'm gonna go with bravo. remember when queer eye first started? they replaced the african-american guy with puerto rican Jai. i didn't give it a second thought (i LOVED queer eye), but now...
ReplyDelete@bionic bunny--
ReplyDeleteI watched those original shows of Queer Eye with the original 5th member. He rarely did anything for a culture point of view for the show. That, or he was edited that way.
the black people they have had on bravo's shows have been quite dark, and not light skinned at all tho...
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's Bravo. That was the home of Being Bobby Brown! Top Chef, the insipid supermodel show, the new one with the Yenta, all have african american cast members.
ReplyDeleteI am admittedly a huge fan of the train wreck that is RHOC.
Nope, It's Judge Judy. One of the casters is suing because he complained about said memo and got fired. Someone is also suing over age discrimination. Judge Judy herself is not a party to either suit.
