NKOTB About Ten Years Too Late
I'm fairly sure that most of you saw that New Kids On The Block is reforming or reuniting or going to try and get some money out of people or something. Their website which had previously been dormant like their careers is now back up and running. If this premise sounds familiar, it is the same thing The Spice Girls did before announcing their reunion tour. Unlike The Spice Girls though, NKOTB have waited a little long to make their comeback.
In 1999, MTV tried to reunite the group for the Video Music Awards but Jonathon said no. If you can't remember who Jonathon is, he is the pretentious one of the group. That really helps doesn't it? 1999 would have been a good time to do it. 1994 was their last album which bombed so bad that it is unfortunate it was even released. The problem was all their fans had grown up and were listening to real music.
There is nothing wrong with having liked NKOTB. Nothing at all. I think bubble gum pop is a very important part of the growing up process, and don't disparage their success for even one second. What I think is the wrong thing to do is to try and think they can come back now and make a ton of money and try to reclaim their lost glory like a a 40 year old guy in a slow pitch softball league.
The Spice Girls were always campy and kitschy and it hasn't been that long since they had been together. Second, most of their members have stayed in the public eye and so people were familiar with what they were doing and there was some star power. Even with all of that, the Spice Girls still overdid it and ended up looking greedy as they played half filled arenas for much of their latter dates.
Who is going to want to see NKOTB? If you were 16 when their final album was released, you are now approaching 30. While it was fun to dance and scream and have their posters on your wall when before you could rive, are you really going to spend $100 a person to see a bunch of 40 year old guys attempt to dance and lip synch for 90 minutes? If you want that go to Karaoke that has drink specials.
These guys just need to leave everyone with a warm nostalgic smile on their faces when they think of NKOTB memories and not replace them with the sight of a bunch of balding, beer bellied guys mouthing the words to Hangin Tough.
If you want to relive your youth or just see really bad acting, Step By Step is the video below.
I was always too old for them. I think I was 21 when hanging tough came out. All the neighborhood girls were screaming and giggling when their videos came on. I used to think Joey was adorable(I think that was his name). But I have to agree with ENT. I think they will make a joke out of themselves more than anything else. They need to just do A benefit concert for a one night affair and leave it at that. JMO. :0)
ReplyDeleteJeez Ent - does someone need to get laid?? So bitter today. Cheer up!
ReplyDeletePretty pic, Jolara.
ReplyDeleteWow. I was 12 in '89 and absolutely IN LOVE with Joey McIntyre. I had his poster on my wall and everything. I remember going to the concert and being around thousands and thousands of screaming, crying tweens and teenage girls. Joey was my first real celebrity crush. By '92 I had grown past teeny-bop music and was into grunge Nirvana, baggy jeans and plaid shirts. LOL.
ReplyDeleteSorry there is no way Donnie Wahlberg is gonna even say yes to this. Those days are long behind him.
ReplyDeleteThese guys should write a book of their glory days..full disclosure.
Now THAT i'd read.
So would I, Jax.
ReplyDeleteEspecially stories of rampant drug use during the days when Donnie would wear the "Say No to Drugs" T-shirts on stage.
LOL, Kara & jax. I have to agree with both of you!
ReplyDeleteThank you janele. :0)
I was wondering if that was Donnie Wahlberg. Thanks jax.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the outfits these guys were wearing LOL.
There may be hope for them yet.I read somewhere else today that One of the band members, Donny (the dark headed one) is denying a comeback tour at this time and chalks the talk up to rumors. Then goes on to pimp his solo album out soon.
ReplyDeleteWell, Ent and I must share a life. The album cover he put up there was the first CD I ever bought. One of my friends says he still has a photo of my bedroom with an NKOTB poster on the wall. (I guess I was gay at 10, huh?)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the guy I always thought was the best looking, Danny Wood sent out a myspace bulletin saying it's all bunk (and aside from all the tats, he's still looking good). Lots of places have it already posted (dlisted linked here since we're all Michael K fans).
EL you dont do your research do you? Not only has the revival been denied, but the downlow is that they're not talking about reuniting for a tour, but for a reality show for a new NKOTB
ReplyDeletetrix..they all deny it before they say yes. It's called creating a buzz to see if anyone cares before they sadly slink off to a corner of oblivion.
ReplyDeleteThe Spice Girls were only copying Take That who are nobodies in the US but who reformed very successfully in the UK recently
ReplyDeleteIs there a TCBY Oldies Tour forming?
ReplyDeleteI saw them in concert with my best friend one summer(we were probably 11 or 12). We ran up toward the stage to take a picture and when we did, everyone had started standing on their chairs. We made it to the front row and this girl said, "Come on, You can stand up here with us(on the chairs)!"
ReplyDeleteAs I was standing there, I swear Danny Wood pointed at me when he sang! NO REALLY!! LOL
I love the new kids on the block lol
ReplyDeleteI dont even remember when they were actually popular seeing as i was born in 1990 but my older cousin loved them. maybe im just weird but i love early 90s pop music and old school shows from the nineties but i definately wouldnt pay $100 dollars to see them now
BRING EM ON! I would so pay $100 to see them. I have their greatest hits CD in my car.
ReplyDeleteI love New Kids on the Block..
ReplyDeleteI was 9 when their final cd..tape? came out
but I was five when I met them all for the first time
I loved them then and I love them now..
I still watch the cartoons they made
and I have them on my i-pod
and myspace
yes I'm a dork..
but at 22 I still love them...maybe even more than BSB and Nsync
i am so with you starr. in fact i am buying our tickets for their Toronto tonight(even my husband wants to come and he likes summertime). That is the closest they are coming to upstate ny and that is going to be a 4 hour drive for me...but its so worth it. whats wrong with wanting to relive your past? i was a huge fan when i was younger and i still am now. i kept up with what most of them where doing all these years. its a part of my teenage years that i dont want to forget ever.
ReplyDeleteHELLO??? Most groups do have a reunion, kiss, The Eagles, The Police, The doors and even van halen. They are way older than 40 omg most of them are late 50's. People spend a lot more than 50 bucks a ticket to see them(and most tickets for the nkotb are 55-75 not a 100). lol i would love to see those even one of the groups try to dance. it takes a lot to sing well, let alone being able to pull some dancing in as well.
i think its really fun that you talk about fat bawling guys. which one is fat?? maybe you need some glasses- have you seen danny- he has more muscles in his arms that most men ever have.
I love when people talk about wanting money is a bad thing. Do i think that might be a reason they came back- to a point yes. What group isnt out to make money?? Other wise concerts would be free.. but do i think that is the only reason they came back- hell no.
why dont you try to read a little about them before stating untrue facts dude. get a fricken life- you dont like them then dont listen to them.
