Dane Cook - Still Not Funny
Dane Cook wants people to think he is funny. I actually think he is very funny as an actor. His standup though has never been funny. It is ok for three minutes while you are waiting for a commercial to be over on another channel, but taken in doses of more than five minutes, you feel brain cells just slipping away. I think this is why Jessica Simpson liked him so much. With no brain cells to begin with, she felt like Dane Cook was her God.
Anyway, ever since Dane Cook broke Richard Pryor's Laugh Factory stand-up record last April, he and Dave Chappelle have been going back and forth trying to outlast the other. There is one huge difference between the two. Dave is funny and Dane is not.
In the latest round, Dane Cook went on stage Tuesday night and finished seven hours later which broke the record of 6 hours and 12 minutes Dave had set last month. Pryor's record which had stood for 27 years was 2 hours and 41 minutes. I think part of the back and forth with Chappelle stems from the fact that people thought Dane Cook disrespected the memory of Richard Pryor by breaking the record, and doing so for all the wrong reasons. Dane did it for personal glory and no other reason. Dave took offense and so has made it is goal to make sure that Dane will not hold the record for long.
Dane Cook IS funny. Jay Leno, however, is not.
ReplyDelete"Employee of the Month" should've ended both his and Jessica Simpson's careers. I don't know why it didn't.
ReplyDeleteDave "fuckin" Chapelle. The man.
ReplyDeleteDane Cook is NOT funny. He just makes simple statements and puts charisma behind it to "sell" the "joke". Reminds me of a thousand cocky frat boys I've met, and they're all a dime a dozen.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, he's a KNOWN joke stealer. He's ripped a lot of stuff off of Louis C.K., one of my favorite comedians. In one case, he didnt even bother to change the titles and order and content of three sketches he'd stolen from Louis C.K.
When I heard he broke Dave's record, I groaned, and thought, "How many comics did he rip off of THIS time, to make that record?"
Dave Chappelle, now theres a man that actually IS funny and has GOOD material. I hope he goes right back and reclaims the record, because Dane Cook is NOT a comedian. He's a joke thief wannabe that sells his material on his good looks and charm.

ReplyDeleteOMG he's ripped off another one of my favorite comics, too, Demetri Martin:
ReplyDeleteAfter the release of his CD/DVD Retaliation, similarities were noticed between Cook's work and material recorded on Louis C.K.'s 2001 album Live in Houston.[8] The bits in question are Louis C.K.'s "Itchy Asshole," "Guy On A Bike," and "Naming Kids." In 2005, Dane Cook performed and released three similar routines on Retaliation.[9] These are "Itchy Asshole," "Struck By A Vehicle," and "My Son Optimus Prime," respectively.
In 2005, on the message boards of comedy website A Special Thing, C.K. posted a response to his fans who accused Cook of plagiarizing from him writing "Okay, this kid is stealing from me. And making lots of money. Three bits on one CD." Later, C.K. wrote "Just so you know, guys, I'm not going to do anything about this.... I'm not going to court over a bit called 'Itchy Asshole.'"[10] In an interview on the Free Beer & Hot Wings Morning Show in February 2007, C.K. stated that while the jokes are similar, the issue was "overblown" and may stem from a backlash against Cook's popularity. However, C.K. accused Cook of being "bullyish" and litigious towards comedians for having similar material to his despite Cook claiming elsewhere that comedians often have similar material and it is not a big issue to him. C.K. also stated "Too bad the guy [Cook] can't write enough." C.K. ended the interview by saying, "Fuck Dane Cook, he's a cunt."[11]
Comedian Joe Rogan has spoken on many occasions (including the December 1, 2006 broadcast of the Opie and Anthony Show) about Cook performing a bit on an episode of Premium Blend that Rogan had developed on I'm Gonna Be Dead Someday (sketch titled 'Tigers Fucking'), and claims to have performed the routine earlier in clubs with Cook present.[12] Rob Sheffield criticized Dane Cook's material in a Rolling Stone article from October 2006, claiming a joke he performed was originally done by Emo Philips.[13] Comedian Ron White has criticized Dane Cook for his lack of real material and for his inflated ego.[14] At a 2007 Irving Plaza show, comedian Zach Galifianakis commented, “I saw Employee of the Month the other day...it wasn't as good as I thought it was gonna be.” During his closing number he revealed a sign that read “Kill Dane Cook" before leaving the stage.[15] Less publicized accusations of comedic plagiarism by Cook emerged in September 2006 on Saturday Night Live by Demetri Martin of Daily Show fame. Clips on Youtube show a stand up bit Cook suppossedly lifted from Martin's 9/26/06 release of his live material These Are Jokes on some trouble buying shoes, where Cook goes as far as using the same incorrect shoe size (size 9) that Martin mentioned in his joke that was released 4 days before Cook's performance of a nearly identical shoe joke while hosting SNL on 9/30/06. [16]
In addition to such specific claims of plagiarism, numerous commentators have characterized Dane Cook's humor as unfunny,[17] banal,[18] and lacking jokes.[19]

ReplyDeleteLOL! I love how that makes it look like cold hard scientific fact that he's not funny.
LOL well on Wikipedia, you're not allowed to make statements that are from your own point of view, unless sources actually back it up, like critics!! I should check those sources.
ReplyDeleteThere is one huge difference between the two. Dave is funny and Dane is not.
ReplyDeleteWord. :)
Lucky Louis is the shit..that show is the best thing to hit TV since Seinfeld.
ReplyDeleteJax, have you seen his standup? If you like Lucky Louis, you might like his standup even more, or at least, that was the case with me. Wonderful stuff. Check out his HBO standup special, Shameless. Best act I've ever seen! I was lucky to see him live in Seattle in November, he's just as good live, and he never repeats a joke :) I do declare, he is a bigger potty mouth than Carlin, and more cynical and rat bastard than Leary!! :)
ReplyDeleteyes..and was so excited when the show came out.
ReplyDeletei love me some potty mouth comedians.

ReplyDeleteAwww, me too, but you just gotta love the ones that do the potty mouth thing but manage to be one of the funniest mofos out there, too, eh? :) Louis CK FTW!!! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd did you know he puts up exclusive original content on YouTube? :) :) :)
Dane Cook is so unfunny.
ReplyDelete(How unfunny is he?)
Dane Cook is so unfunny that he can't even inspire a decent joke, much less write one.
Dane Cook think it's funny to ask stupid questions like "why do trees have bark, but dogs bark and piss on trees?"
ReplyDeleteIn fact that's TOO funny for Dane Cook, and I just made it up while writing this.
Dane cook is simply too popular for the stupid jokes he tells, and there's only one explanation: like Bill Hicks said, he's just another cheap poseur who SUCKS SATAN'S BALLS!
I dont care if he stole his jokes or not. If you do it well, you can put your own flavour on the jokes and reinvent them to be funny, like Denis Leary did with a lot of Bill Hicks'material.
ReplyDeleteDane Cook, he's just not funny. When I see Dane Cook, I see some prick running around a stage, making normal statements with his limbs flailig to sell his unfunny statements, not being funny.
"Why do they call it bananas, shouldnt they be called Funnanas?"
- Huh? Am I supposed to be laughing at this crap? This sounds like something that came out of the mouth of a retarded 5-year old.
If you want funny, go to Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce, Dave Chappelle, Doug Stanhope, all people who were and still are cutting edge comics with something on their hearts as well as being funny.
Fuck you Dane Cook, you're a poser.

ReplyDeleteWow, kind of harsh for a person you don't even know. And "makes it look like cold hard scientific fact that he's not funny"? Wow... Didn't know opinions could be fact. Doesn't that just sound intelligent? I'm sure hating people you've never met is entirely rational. And I'm sure that it is also immencely bright to believe everything you read. Yup. I can't find anyone more brainy. Dane Cook is not my favorite guy. He's not my favorite comedian. Yet I don't go around calling him names and accusing him of shit, because my own life sucks. You may or may not be right, but who's to say you're not just an ass for saying anything? And I'm directing this to the reviewers, mostly. Bloggers can say what they want. They can have their own opinions, but honestly. You reviewers can get a little out of hand.
ReplyDeleteIt never fails; whenever you say something sucks, some idiots will call you a "hater."
ReplyDeleteEven if someone shoots you and kills your wife and family, they'll call you a "hater" for saying it sucks.
I'd say that they're crying wolf, but then they'll just call me a "hater" for that too.
You can't reason with an idiot!
