Joaquin Phoenix Throws Himself Under A Bus

Do you remember Ladder 49? It's okay if you don't. It had John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix and judging by the name, I'm guessing it was about firefighters. Well during the press tour for the movie, Joaquin started spinning a yarn that became longer and longer each time he told it.

Basically the yarn involved him spending time with the NY Fire Academy and spending time with NYFD personnel in preparation for the movie. He went on and on about how inspiring they were and how he learned so much.

Well, Time Out New York wanted to do a followup story on the claims and after some hemming and hawing, Joaquin finally broke down and said he made it all up.

The actor said he made the claim to impress reporters while promoting his 2004 movie Ladder 49. Phoenix told Time Out New York: "I just said that because I thought it would sound good to the press."I don't know why it seems to be of note that actors do any kind of preparation. It's just what you're supposed to do in your f**king job. Do you think that because you did some research that you deserve some special credit?"

He added: "I never prepare. I think that's completely overrated. It's a very simple job. All you have to do is... stand in the right spot and say the line. So I don't really believe in preparation."

So, I'm guessing Joaquin isn't a method actor huh? It's too bad he's not because maybe then he would have won the Oscar and not just been nominated for one. Frankly, I like the guy as an actor, but the scar on the face drives me crazy. Not as crazy as looking at Hugh Grant's teeth, but still crazy.

  1. so, i agree that JP is a crazy MF, but this isnt the first (nor the last) stupid interview he has given. he HATES doing press and most movies attemps not to, when he is forced to he makes up all sorts of bullshit to either throw the reporter or get them to shut up.
i wouldnt ever belive anything JP says in any interview one way or another.

  3. this fits his self-destructive pattern: he's killing himself with crystal and heroin right now. eva mendes has hinted about how much she hated working with him, he went nuts on duvall, showed up at a brunch he was supposed to host absolutely maniacally high.

i guess holding your older brother in your arms while he od's and dies will do that yo a person >8(

  4. I was in Walk the Line with him and he seemed to be "in character" the whole time, so this kind of surprised me.

Either way, he's a talented actor. I'm not trying to defend him but it really did surprise me that he made all of that up.

  5. I think the scar comment went over the line.

  6. I think it has more to do with the person interviewing him. If you read the entire interview, she starts off baiting him and he knew it and so I think he wasn't going to give her anything and he purposely lied to her.

  7. where is this article in which he said this? I'd be really interested to read this yarn ball.

  10. You do realize that the scar if from cleft palate surgery, right? Kind of tacky there, Ent. Talk about his drug use all you want, but not a deformity he was born with.

  11. Actually it's not a cleft palate, just a scar.

I'm pretty sure he had a cleft palate. I can't remember where I heard that for sure though.

  13. Overrated spoiled actor who we never would have even heard of had his (actually talented) brother not OD'ed in front of Johnny Depp's nightclub.

    meh

  14. What did Eva say about him?

He did do some method acting for Walk the Line, he admitted he drank so much to get in touch with the character that he ended up in rehab when the flick ended.

As far as making up stories to satisfy reporters, it happens ALL the time! I used to work in PR and do junkets and satellite tours and would have to sit through interview after interview and they'd change stories every few interviews. I'd ask them sometimes why they did it and they were always "do you want to tell the same stories for 6 hours straight?" so often they'd just make up shit just to not get so bored doing press.

  16. It's not just you captivagrl. He is a crazy MF and that's what makes him so hot. He's just different. He probably did make the whole thing up but that just makes me love him more!

  17. He makes stuff up all the time. I think you cannot believe anything he says when forced to do an interview because he hates it.

And his scar is NOT from a cleft. He was born with it. No one knows what exactly happened but his mother was bleeding and was therefor forced to give birth and the family thinks that this has something to do with his scar.
