I have to admit I was stunned when I read this and am sure most of you are as well.
"Gimme More" will open at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs with 179,000 downloads and soars 68-3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Both charts will be posted tomorrow (Oct. 4) on Billboard.com."More" is her fifth Hot 100 top 10 and her best showing on the list since her smash debut "...Baby One More Time" hit No. 1 for two weeks in January 1999.
Her last top 10 was "Toxic," which peaked at No. 9 in March 2004.
Spears' as-yet-untitled new album is still on target for a Nov. 13 release via Jive.
I am sure many of you have listened to the song, and my feeling is that it is okay. It's not great, but not Paris Hilton bad. I would put her high sales down to hype and people wanting to hear the song and see how bad it is, but those are some really big numbers and so there must be a huge number of people that actually love the song and are going to buy the CD.
Now, it could be Britney just doesn't have anything to do after tanning at night and so is downloading her song over and over to make it look good.
People still buy CDs? Morbid curiousity accounts for the downloads. Either that or she is handing out a crack rock for every confirmed download to her posse.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Lisa. Charts don't mean nearly as much as they use to and I think a lot of people are curious after seeing all the footage of that disaster on MTV. That's all.
ReplyDeleteThe record labels & Billboard themselves are forced to put out these press releases to make them look like they are still relevant.
179,000 downloads can buy a whole lot of meth.
ReplyDeletemaybe i'm in the minority (or not if the numbers are accurate) but i really like "gimme more." i think it's a fun, upbeat dance song which is what britney has always put out.
ReplyDeleteNo one ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American public
ReplyDeleteI like Gimme More, too .... although the visual of the train wreck that I associate with it is unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteThat is one heck of a great work out song.
I also like gimme more. It's been in my head since the VMAs. Great dance pop IMO.
ReplyDeleteI was gonna say I wish she could enjoy this achievement with celebration like everyone else but who are we kidding she more that likely cracked an eight-ball for transferring her drivers license.
ReplyDelete"Drivings hard y'all"!!!!
I like the song too. Kill me more, but I gotta say ya know there was no meth talk until the bg caught her in a room with an ex-rehab buddy. Thanks Mom, now you really fd me up. Oh now ya want the kids.
ReplyDeleteHey, where's Richie Sambora. He's in rehab maybe after potentially losing his kid after his chapsick deal. But .. he didn't lose them did he?
Her job (after all this s$Q$ is to sell downloads. She has done the impossible, on a day WHERE SHE HAD LOST HER KIDS. She is number one.
Typical working mom on her own, putting the bread on the table. You never hear me bitch about Kevin. He's doing his part. Makin' fruit loops
Now that the kids are gone, give her a break.
No, Im not. Just ask tomato. Im way too Jacqueline Susann to go there.
Okay, forgetting that it's "Britney Spears" it's actually a pretty good dance song. Like, if you're at a club and they start playing it, it would get people on the dancefloor.
ReplyDeleteEven if it wasn't Britney but someone else I would still say the same thing. Sometimes music just speaks for itself. However, whether it dates or stands the test of time is another thing entirely.
Have to agree with brendalove. That drug makes folks do crazy things. Kids don't even matter to those addicts. Good for her if she can still make money. It won't be for long if she doesn't clean up.
ReplyDeleteShe wanted to lose those kids..don't 'kid' yourself.
ReplyDeleteNo mother who is in a sane and sober mind would be out partying yet again on the night her kids were taken away. NONE.
That's 179 000 Britaloonies draining their bank accounts for their heroine. Enablers!!! get a clue morons.
As for Gimme More..i like it..the first time Kylie did it to a diff beat. I'd love to have been there when they sampled 4 lines of Britney's 'voice' and turned it into a song. No talent, no self respect, no shame.

ReplyDeleteThe thing about Britney's music is - she doesn't write the lyrics (all the time), she doesn't compose the music or lay down tracks. She's just a face and a voice. The talented folk are those people behind her (ahem) creating the music.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, once she gets too haggard, and what little voice she has fades, they'll be another girl ready to take her place. Right now, Britney's got the publicity, and that helps sell records.
I wonder how her album will do...
