Let me preface this post, by saying that if this story ever comes out, it would blow the music world up and shake it to its core..This would put the Milli Vanilli scandal and Ashlee Simpson SNL situation so far down the ladder it would be crazy..

Towards the end of last year I had a woman come into my office and she began to explain what she had done and had been doing for several years and it was one of the very few times that I just could not believe what I was hearing..I know the music industry inside and out, and I had never heard of something so extensive and pervasive as this..

This woman (S) came into my office because the payments she had been receiving had stopped and she wanted to either get the money that was owed to her, or expose what she had been doing to the light of day..

S is a sessions/studio/backup singer and is very good..Prior to her involvement in what I am going to describe, she made a very good living singing on commercials and being a backup singer for groups and other solo acts, etc..Like I said she is very good, but she does not really have that "look" which would make her a star, so record companies did not put her out front, but just used her talents..

In late 2000, a man came to her one day and said he needed someone to record some demos because he had written a lot of songs, but wanted a demo to shop the songs to singers and record labels..This is not unusual at all and she had done this type of work before and it paid pretty well so she agreed. What was unusual about her recording of the demos was how much work was put into the actual recordings..It was extensive..Generally there is not much time put into the recordings because you never really know if the song will even sell, and the money spent on recording could be put to better uses..These demos she was recording were actually being treated as if they were going to be released on a CD or to radio..They even did some mixing which was REALLY unusual..

After a few weeks she had recorded about over a dozen songs and she went on her way and was really oblivious to anything else pertaining to it, UNTIL several months later she was in her car and heard her voice coming from the radio, only it was another singer being given credit..(We will call this other singer MV for Milli Vanilli) She could not believe what she was hearing and did not know whether to be excited to hear herself on the radio, confused about the credit given to another singer or just pissed off for the same reasons..

What she did do, was to call the man who had originally come to her and had her record the songs..The man agreed to meet her and gave her a substantial sum of money and promised to keep giving her money every month as long as she kept her mouth shut. MV was taking off..(MV has/had several Top 40 songs and CD's. They could have gone to #1 or languished in the 30's..I really cannot go into much more detail or else it would be too easy to discover) MV was everywhere..on television, radio, awards shows, commercials..EVERYWHERE..meanwhile, S continued to get money every month and kept her little secret to herself..The guy who picked S was VERY lucky..Most singers would have caused a fuss, but S has always been in the background and was resigned to the fact she always would be, and was very happy just taking the $$, and did not want that to stop..

About 9 months go by and S is called by the guy because MV is going on tour and they want S to record some extra mixes and such for the tour..She agrees and does not really do much, but money is money..

Fast forward another year or so and S stops receiving money and after a few months of missed payments, calls the guy who explains that they need S to do another CD and then the payments can continue, but there is no more money unless she does more recordings..

S agrees and records another CD worth of songs which is released several months later and does even better than the first CD. This same process is repeated (I am not going to tell you the number of CD's because again you may be able to deduce and so I will just say the process repeated itself several times)

Well everything goes well for the most part for all these years and then no more payments, and no more calls and she cannot even locate our mystery man..S has not received a payment in six months when she came into my office and related this story..She did not even know the guy's name, but when she described him, I knew who he was and was even more floored than I had been previously..This was just something I had really not heard before..

I had heard of really altering voices in the recording studios and bringing in hired hands for one song or a large portion of a song, but never CD after CD and even doing extra work so a live performance would not sound staged..I told her I needed some time to check into her story and then we could proceed..It took two calls before I got the guy on the phone and he was pissed, scared, angry, threatening, remorseful..everything..It turns out the reason he had stopped making payments was he had been playing some shell games with the money between the record company, MV's earnings and MV's investments and just did not have any additional money..In addition, MV was not sure she wanted to continue on with what had been happening and so our mystery guy might be completely out of the picture..

I actually think the record company to this day has no idea what went on as the Guy was very good at what he does/did and knew how to make sure the record company was always happy..He stayed under budget, toured, made MV available, and made the record company money..

So a meeting was arranged in my office and S and MV finally met face to face..they had never done so, even though it was S who made MV a star..MV was rude to say the least when she saw what S looked like and it really upset me although S being her normal classy self could have cared less..

What we agreed to do that day was to provide S with one lump sum rather than a monthly income which was easier for Guy to pull off and S also agreed to never disclose her role in this drama and MV was on her own for future recordings and tours..

This involved literally millions of CD's and hundreds of concerts all over the world..The one thing I did get out of this beside my fee of course is a Gold Record autographed by S and by MV..I know it is the only one in the world..

wow, so many possibilities. i actually heard that this was done sometime in the '90s, like in the marky mark "good vibrations" video and stuff.

i know it cannot possibly be mariah, whitney, or even beyonce because i've heard them sing acapella right in from of me. how about some of the lesser-known r&b singers, like ashanti? ciara?

People, don't be so gullible. A REAL lawyer would never even hint about his clients (especially on the internet, where his ISP address could be tracked down). He'd get caught and disbarred. I guess PT Barnum was right, a sucker is born every minute.

    MV = Madonna Veronica Ciccone

Madonna's first album was ok, with Holiday and Everybody, but the second, was huge (Like A Virgin), so it fits perfectly.

Also with the MV thinh, wich is not know that Madonna has Veronica on her name.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous6:44 AM

To the last commenter, he said he called the MV for "Milli Vanilli." It's no one's initials, and Madonna sounds the same as she always has.

Anyway, I actually think it's Alicia Keyes for sure now, assuming this isn't a bunch of BS. I have to agree with the other commenter who said that this guy writes fairly poorly for a lawyer.

  40. Anonymous7:02 AM

Well, I don't remember Alicia Keys in any commercials - the only one that fits this is JLo but I think one of her songs has actually gone up there - and plus, she sucks and so does alicia keys - so, they wouldn't be it and Norah JOnes does mainly live performances so that's not it either - it could very well be ghetto Beyonce!! ooh - those that have heard her in real life said that she can't hold a key! ouch

  64. I've heard this story before but am wary about the authenticity of this blog for a number of reasons. Attorney-Client privilege for starters. So what you omitted names and changed the dates?!? You've laid out the premise of exactly what went down and that my friend crosses the line of confidentiality. Secondly, you are allegedly based in LA. From what I know about this supposed "scandal" is that the players involved-- meaning the record company and vocalists-- are based in NYC so I'm not sure if you are really who you say you are. And thirdly, the fact that you just started this blog this month and you are already checking how many hits you have and noting your web traffic just as you post this huge 'earth shattering' info let's me know that maybe MV isn't the only one having trouble paying her bills and that this just may be your new racket in hopes of getting a major book deal to tell all of your "stories". Damn with all this blogging when the hell do you find time to practice law anyway?!? Yeah just as I thought-- no billable hours equals more time for new blogger hustle.

And for everyone else, it is definitely NOT Alicia Keys. This I know because I was in the studio for a few sessions on her first album which was done for one label, subsequently rejected, and then picked up by another. She sang all her joints herself.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I never said she was not from NYC, and never said she was. I simply said she came to my office. Where had she been for the years prior. I do not remember saying.

Also, you are right about the billable hours. I generally try and bill about 7 a day, six days a week and this month has been a LOT lower.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anonymous12:50 PM

According to imdb, Alicia Keys graduated valedictorian from "Fame" HS where she majored in choir.

It has to be someone who has a speaking voice totally different than their singing voice.

J Lo's singing sounds just like her speaking voice (she even kind of speak/sings in some of her songs).

Britney's terrible songs sound just like her speaking voice too.

I have to think Madonna's singing sounds like her speaking voice too...plus she did Evita and the producers would have known if it wasn't her & wouldn't have given her the role-she fought HARD for that role.

So I can't guess who it is...but I think it's someone pretty big.

You say that when S came into your office after not receiving a payment for 6 months that she didn't know the name of the guy that she had done the work for, or how to get a hold of him. What a bunch of hooey. The music industry isn't THAT big - you mean to tell us that she did a bunch of work and didn't even get the guy's name?? As if...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anonymous1:41 PM

For those saying this guy's not really a lawyer, think about this:

Only way this scandal would really come out is if S blew it up, but then she's violate the agreement & get sued. MV isn't going to sue the lawyer b/c then she'd be blowing up her own spot.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous2:04 PM

She wanted to be a star but was too (fat? ugly?) to get there, so she sang back-up and commercial work. Fair enough. When she realised that a big star had earned their fame from her voice, why wouldnt she go to the press then? She'd not only be front page news and be on all the talk shows but could tour to large audiences off of the reveal, at least for a short period of times. See, it doesn't ring true, does it? Another issue would be the payments- if the star was selling millions of records, the singer would likely expect hundreds of thousands of dollars. How would the manager get that cash: "Hi, I need $300000." "What for?" "er, I can't tell you". I may not know much about the law, but I do know that accountancy doesn't work like that! The singer would probably keep asking for more and more money, using the threat of making the whole secret public if refused.
My conclusion- entertaining, certain to go on/ have gone on more than the ones that have been made public- Milli Vanilli, Boney M, Blackbox, but this story is probably a scam or too many details have been bodged to consider it legitimate.

    I totally think it's Jennifer Lopez. There has been something that has ALWAYS bothered me about J. Lo and it's that around the time she did the movie Selena, I was watching an interview with her, and they asked if she did the singing and she was like;

    "No, I can't sing."

Then a year or two later, On The 6 comes out and I was like, WTF? I thought she said she can't sing.

    Selena was in 1997.

Assuming there's a little leeway in dates because people often mix things up, let's look at Jenny from the Block's timeline:

1999 - On The 6 hits, makes it to the top ten
2001 - J. Lo comes out, debuts at number one (the second record did even better than the first)

    J. Lo's last album didn't do as well, and fell off the charts pretty quickly, so she could be considering scrapping this whole thing in favor of her perfumes, clothing line, movies, and crap. Even though she's supposedly working on another studio album, when was the last time she was actually in a studio, and not being trailed by the hand by her husband?

    This story is SOOOOO bullshit...

I have worked in the music industry before, but moved on towards academia. Occasionally, I still get calls to work on something here or there.

The thing is, this is a common practice in the industry...not overtly doing someone elses vocals, but in quite a few other ways. For instance, my partner and I have 'co-written' several songs for artists. Co-written in quotes because they have an idea, we ask them about the back stories associated with it, does it come from their lives, is it a story they are intimately familiar with, what...

We may take elements of what they already had in place, but most of the time, its rewritten in its entirety. Analyze the artists back catalogue, if they have one, for stylistic earnotes and go from there.

I've only been credited on one song in 10 years, and it wasn't even mine. My partner was well known in the 70s and 80s, but he too gets paid more to stay in the background.

A lot of times, these are recorded by session players, with guys that do the same thing (lot of players that have no style of their own can imitate someone elses). Occasionally, even the artists will be deceived, I've seen artists record and then everything retracked without their knowledge. I won't take part in something like this.

There are ironclad contracts in place for these sorts of things. Most of the time as hired guns we don't even take in royalties. I don't care -- I get paid for my time. It isn't a crap shoot like my first time in the industry where my face was associated with a band (well, in the background, even though I wrote everything).

As part of these ironclad contracts, its pretty much known that if you try to get any more money out of anyone, it will be considered blackmail as well as breach of contract. *NO ONE* that has ever done this has ever worked in the industry again. I'm sure they may get a solo independent career and this may force the industry into taking the chance, but you will not get hired on talent and potential alone. More than likely, you'd be sued out of existence and the recording industry lawyer will petition to close the case to the public -- of which, the only time I've heard of this, the backup artist tried going to the public and was jailed in contempt of court.

    ---

So having said all of this, why is this story bullshit? Because I work with enough IP lawyers as well as industry representation. Not one would risk what this person is risking. The lawyer would know he was participating in blackmail, and could risk disbarment. The artist wouldn't have some shell game to pay someone else. Its pretty upfront; the pop industry has different standards than non-commodity music. The backup artist was paid and there was no other reason to keep paying for hush money.

All in all, the story stinks.

PS -- no I'm not breaking any rules by mentioning this stuff because I haven't mentioned artists or corporations. The practice is known, and the music is the same no matter who created it. The only people that get upset about these practices are the same people that wouldn't buy the 'ugly artists' albums for purely aesthetic purposes (and the same exact people that buy Paris or Lindsay albums no matter how shitty they are). Music should stand on its own...

Oh yeah, music technology is at a point where you can imprint one vocal quality on top of someone elses performance. A shitty take can be 'tweened' and blended so that it really is a combined performance. The backup artist can provide the timing and articulation, while the 'performer' can impart their own poor takes and have their own words overlay almost the exact path without any of the backups audio imprint remaining. If you know what you are looking for, you can here timbre changes in the bends and gracenotes as the poor artist probably won't be able to align themselves to these (these are where timing can't self correct and as such, it becomes all about pitch sync). I've tried this on my own voice and its a perfect example that the complete talentless couldn't compete. Most bad singers are still better that 99% of the public.

Shades of Martha Wash and Blackbox/C+C Music Factory. She let them dog her twice, which was unbelievable to me.

Anyway..It's not Vanessa Williams, i can assure you of that. I saw her on Broadway several years ago in "Kiss of the Spider Woman", and believe me, she can blow. It's not Brandy, because she has sounded the same from the beginning, and she doesn't tour too tough due to stage fright. It's not Blu Cantrell because she wasn't that popular.

I have no idea why folks would say Alicia Keys, especially after she did "Unplugged". The performance she gave then with her speaking and launching right into song makes me believe that's her voice.

I would almost say Janet due to the concerts/millions of CD's sold, but her voice is so weak, i can't believe anyone would be paid to sound like that. (But i love you, Janet !).

The fact that i got hip to this blog from MediaTakeOut.com leads me to believe this is a R & B Artist. Based on that, i believe it's J-Ho. However...Britney Spears immediately came to my mind after reading the this.

I hope it's not Ashanti, because she would really have to be pitiful if she couldn't sing 'ooh baby' or 'aw baby' herself. Y'all know that's all she says on her records.

BTW, this person could very well be an attorney. They aren't giving enough information to easily identify MV. Whoever it is isn't going to try to sue this person because it would blow her game. The fixer isn't going to expose it because it would blow his game, and put other artists he's dealt with into question.

There's another site i visit where folks in the industry (yes, an attorney too) frequently discuss things about celebrities. You can tell who's real and who's fake. The real ones will kick dirt on that site that you hear about in the media weeks or months later. Anyway, i like your blog, and i'll be back.

The Industry was built on this, it's no big surprise. Backmasking and Dubbing and Sound switches (the literal process of getting a substitute singer to fill in areas of a song that an artist is unable to sing properly) are all common practice in big record studios like Sony, Universal, and yes - even Jive Records.

I think this is a fake! I highly doubt that this is real, and I have no idea why 400+ blog sites make the digg frontpage today.

There are too many "singers" or bands out there that I've heard on album and live, and sound completley different... so I don't doubt this is happening in the music industry; however, I'm skeptical to believe that this is true the way you've posted it because of a few things.

First of all, if you are a lawyer (or any other type of professional for that matter) confidentiality has to be a huge part of your life. You just don't talk about the things you are told in confidence to one person let alone on the internet.

Secondly, the way you tell the story... sounds more like a glorified fairy tale rather than a true story.

Finally... I just don't know. I agree with someone else's comment about your blog in general. I, personally, think you are telling these stories to get hits. But we are all entitled to our own opinions. I only heard about this post through a friend on LJ.

(Although Beyonce does appear, she doesn't count everbody knows that girl can sang)
In 2001, only Britney launched a world tour (nobody lauches a world tour for songs that only get as high as #30)
From the timeline, she first album hit in early 2001 and the tour was launched about months later. If you'll follow this link, it also seems to answer some of the other questions, for instance, the launch of her next album. Plus, if you read her appearance details, she's EVERYWHERE by this time.

This is pretty much the same story that broke in the 90's, when the "Everybody dance now!" chick from C&C Music Factory was deemed too fat for the video and replaced in videos and concerts by a lip-syncing hottie. But if it's true now, I'm gonna have to guess Britney. I can see her being arrogant with a 'nobody' and she's kind of stopped singing lately. But then, so has Jessica Simpson, I hear.

I sincerely doubt this piece was written by someone who is supposedly so well educated. Further, if this blogger had any merit whatsoever, why the standard blogger template? Surely a rich entertainment attorney could afford their own ISP and domain so they couldn't be traced so easily.

There are very few celebs, who, if found they lip synched would shake the music industry to its core. Christina Milian? Ashanti? Ciara? Hardly any of these are earth shattering. Hilary Duff? Yes, 10 year olds everywhere would need to be medicated. Britney? We already knew. Jessica Simpson? No kidding, really? Although, I can't see her ghost singer making tons of money on THAT voice. Mandy Moore? Who cares!

Unless you told me it was Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Cher or Barbara Streisand, I would hardly consider any of the other ingenues worthy of rocking the musical world.

Nope. I am still resting firmly on bullshit.

There is no way that an attorney wrote this. There are subtle grammar mistakes throughout the story, and most of the story is not written in active voice. Lawyers write in active voice. This is something that is pounded into your brain when you are in your first year of law school. This "attorney" is not a horrible writer, but he doesn't write like a lawyer. I am in law school, and have read many pieces written by all different kinds of attorneys. I could believe that he would write like this if he were an attorney in Podunk, USA. But I stand my ground here. A successful L.A. E Law attorney would NEVER write so poorly. He's a fake.

Let me just say that, if this is true, there is no freaking way it is Britney Spears. Her tracks sound so sythetic that it's hard for me to believe someone else was hired to sing for her. "S" is said to have worked on commmercials, which would mean that she has a great voice, which Britney does not have.

Also, it's perfectly logical that Britney would lip sync to her own tracks when she's live. It would be nearly impossible for her to dance the way she does and pull of singing as well. She would be too out of breath do both at the same time.

    2. I don't believe for a second that it's Ashanti. First, she doesnt sing all that well. Second, she is famous for coming up with choruses and would be musically creative. There's really no reason for it to be her.

Of course it's not Alicia Keys.

Probably not Britney. She sounds synthetic and weak and also recorded the most part of her first album in Europe (Sweden).

JLo has a weak voice. So it ought not be her.

If it is an r&b star, how can all of these big name producers not notice that the singer is not featured on the final product? JLo has worked with Rich Harrison, Big Boi, a number of big time producers. If these guys did notice anything, why have they not spoken about this with their friends and entourage? Word should have gotten out if this was someone working with big name producers.

However, apart from Pharell and possibly Timbaland, I think these superstar producers might accept working without the singer present. But especially Pharell very much relies on the interaction with the singer. Which should be another argument for ruling out Britney (since he has worked with her several times and was set to do it again now before she blew him off).

my friend did some sleuthing and concluded that this may be a hoax. His response is below:

This smells like a hoax to me but I don't like mysteries so I went ahead and tried to solve this one:

The album in question was prolly released in 2001. I guessed that year because the story says that the singer was approached in "late 2000" and heard herself on the radio "several months later". There were 373 albums released in 2001 in America. For the moment, let's only consider albums released by a female solo artist. Believe it or not, that cuts the list down to 29 with a list of women that includes Alicia Keys (sorry, Cat), Madonna, Jessica Simpson, Pink, Mariah, Missy, Bjork, and three Spice Girls.

Now if we limit the list again to women whose FIRST solo album came out that year, we are left with 5. (By the way, Jessica Simpson's first CD came out in 1999, with the hits "I wanna love you forever" and "I think I'm in Love with you" being two of the singles. I know some of you thought it was her.) So who's on that list?

    Album
    Artist
    Release Date

    A Girl Like Me
    Emma Bunton
    16-Apr

    Songs in A Minor
    Alicia Keys
    5-Jun

    The Spirit Room
    Michelle Branch
    14-Aug

    Victoria Beckham
    Victoria Beckham
    1-Oct

    Laundry Service
    Shakira
    13-Nov

The story went on to say that the artist in question was "taking off" and "had several Top 40 songs and CD's." Also, the "star" was "everywhere..on television, radio, awards, shows, commercials..EVERYWHERE.". Well, the Spice Girls are out since Emma only sold 125,000 of her first CD. And while Victoria did slightly better, Wikipedia has this to say : "Despite being one of the most famous celebrities in Britain, and having all her music reach the UK top ten (the only solo Spice to do so), Victoria Beckham's career as a solo artist is largely considered to have been a commercial failure." Also, it seems that Posh shelves more music than she releases and has not been all that prolific in the past 5 years.

This leaves our curious threesome of Shakira, Michelle Branch, and Alicia Keys.

Michelle Branch - Apparently, this girl has been rocking out since she was 8 years old and, technically, her first album was released in 2000. It was a self release CD called Broken Bracelet. Also, she toured with Hanson in December of 2000 when Madonna noticed her and signed her up to Maverick records (What the hell was Madonna doing at a Hanson concert?!!?). She went on to win Grammies and have 3 top 40 singles of that first Maverick-backed CD. In 2002, she did that Carlos Santana song "A Game of Love" which earned her another Grammy. Her second album went platinum but only spawned one top forty single.

Alicia Keys - Allmusic.com reports that "Around the time that Songs in A Minor was released, Keys was popping up everywhere, including an Associated Press story. Where had she been before then?" Good question. Ms. Alicia Augello-Cook has has been playing the piano since age 7, wrote her first song at age 14, and graduated from the "Fame" high school at age 16. Her first commercial offering sold 235,000 the first week and sold more than ten million worldwide. This was followed by several Top 40 hits and five Grammies. Her next CD, released 2003 sold 618,000 copies the first week and has, to date, sold over 7 million units worldwide as well as earned her four more Grammies. However, Alicia's first recordings were in 1997 when she had a song on the Men In Black soundtrack. In addition, she was featured on the soundtracks of both Shaft (2000) and Dr. Doolittle 2 (2001).

Shakira - Possibly the most famous of these three, Shakira steamrolled us all in 2001 with "Whenever, Wherever", all hips and moaning. Her CD, Laundry Service, sold more than 13 million copies and spawned several top 40 hits. She has performed at numerous award shows (including singing "Dude looks like a lady" at MTV Icon in 2002. A curious choice, isn't it. Maybe she's trying to tell us something...) and has herself snagged a carload of awards both her and overseas. She is the highest selling Columbian artist of all time (unless cocaine export is considered an art) and is quite possibly one of the most influential Latin American artists ever. Of course, what hasn't been mentioned is that Shakira was already a smashing success before she reached our shores, releasing her first (failed) CD in 1991 followed by 3 more, the last which made her a household name in Latin America and Spain.

The Verdict: All three of these women have been in commercials and award shows and have been well covered by the media (Michelle Branch, prolly less so). But none of them really fit the description of the story. I mean, all these women have recordings that pre-date 2001. Finding differences in the vocals between now and then would be so easy a New York Post reporter could uncover it. What's more, all these women make a habit of performing live and while this can be faked, I would be SHOCKED to find it had been. So, in conclusion, I have no idea.

Problems: if this happened in another country, the UK for example, this is all for naught since they have different release schedules and stars altogether. Also, wherever the email came from other details might have been changed such as the year that this happened which would throw everything off. Again, I think it's a hoax.

  163. For the poster who guessed Blu Cantrell...there has been alot of space and energy devoted here to calling out those who are hiding behind anonymity and making spurious, dubious claims. This entire blog seems targeted at being provocative and not much else. It is a damned shame that certain singers who have real talent and have busted thier proverbial asses to get where they are must now be subject to the speculation of sensation-seeking armchair quarterbacks.( sorry 'bout the mixed metaphor..:)
(As for those singers who don't have any real talent, well, we all seem to know who they are, no need to dwell on that.)
I am the Mother of twice Grammy-nominated R&B singer Blu Cantrell. I suppose the nay-sayers could always claim this post is a hoax, too; at the end of the day, I really don't care. Just suffice it to say, some of what the alleged entertainment atty claims ain't so far off base, insofar as the dirt the industry is capable of doing, and certain someones' hard-earned money/fame going to people other than themselves...happens every day in the recording industry and will likely continue.
As far as my daughter being named as the no-talent front-er, you're kidding, right ? My girl has been singing her pipes out since she was a tiny little thing in elementary school, plenty of witnesses for that through the years.I was a professional jazz singer for over 20 yrs; she was at rehearsals & backstage with me for many years, comes by it honest.Maybe the poster has never had the privilege of being in a club or concert hall where my daughter has sung a cappella for an appreciative crowd, which happened many times during the height of her celebrity.
My daughter nearly starved to death knocking around for years in the Big Apple before she was "discovered", singing anywhere they'd let her...often without accompaniment. She routinely made the tears well in listeners' eyes.
Had it not been for odd jobs she had and the boxes I sent from home filled with food for she & her roommates, there'd have been no Blu Cantrell. What she endured to earn her celebrity is truly the stuff of legends...maybe someday the story will really get told. She was discovered, by the way, by Tricky Stewart ( of Red Zone) in Atlanta. She was in Atlanta because her younger sister, one of my other daughters, was lying in a coma in ICU after having been in a near-fatal car crash. I had all my kids come there ( we are from New England) because my comatose daughter was not expected to survive. Tiffany ( known to you as Blu) was accosted by a man in our hotel lobby, who said she looked like she was in show business. That man was Tricky Stewart and the rest is history. She came to me and said "Mom, this man wants me to go to studio and record, he's a producer, but I don't want to leave you and my sister". I told her to go, that if it was a real opportunity, it was perhaps the only good thing that could come out of this terrible tragedy, perhaps a blessing in disguise. She was signed to Red Zone shortly after and began recording her freshman CD.
For some nitwit poster with nothing better to do than drag somebodys' name through the mud of this ludicrous blog to even insinuate my daughter didn't do her own singing is an intolerable insult to me and my family and what we have all been through. One of my girls is permanently brain injured, will never be right again in life, and the only good thing that came from those horrific, life-altering months in Atlanta is my daughter Tiffany finally getting the career-making break she so richly deserved. It is a blessing that came to us under the shroud of a tragedy, and damn you for casting even a hint of an aspersion on my daughters' talent.
I had to find out about this post, this blog, from a young relative in another state who keeps up with show biz stuff. She emailed me the hyperlink so I could see for myself. Myself and my family have tolerated a great deal of nonsense and aggravation, a lot of invasion into our familys' right to privacy, relative to my daughters' celebrity, and I have always tried to be gracious about it. This time, though, enough is enough.
If you don't know for a fact who the alleged attorney is alluding to ( and by the way, what a sterling individual HE is, huh ??!?) then go back to your Rice Krispie treats and Sponge-Bob and mind your own damned business.
    MOST Sincerely,
    Susi Franco

wondering if it's Janet Jackson: she had 2 albums that didn't do very well before control blew up. For Control and Rythm Nation and Janet, her voice was Harder more solid. Since then her voice has become much softer and sweet. Also there was that manager who was with her for 9 yrs or so (secretly married) she did pepsi commercials, and has also had over 30 top 40 hits to her credit.

I think this is a hoax, but for those of you trying to figure out the timeline, the first CD probably came out in 2002. For all the work done on the CD per the blog, it would have taken that long to get it finalized and marketed. If this isn't a hoax then I bet an acquaintance of someone in the lawyer's office, e.g. a paralegal, wrote the piece. And, the reason for the expose is sheer spite.

Sooo it's been a long time since this was posted, but my friend and I were sitting here contemplating all the different singers that this could possibly be, and we've narrowed it down to a few.
Since ENT Lawyer says that this would totally rock the music world, it has to be someone that everyone knows, not everyone has to like MV's music, but pretty much all of us know who she is. This means that people like Ciara, Alicia Keys, etc. are most likely not MV. Instead it needs to be someone very well known, who has crossed many genres and who appears to be extremely talented. The singers we chose were Celine Dion (because her singing voice lacks the strong accent that her speaking voice has, and she hasn't released any new material. Plus, she has been performing old material in Vegas which could easily be from the music that S recorded for MV's touring) , Shania Twain (because she was huge and broke the country barrier, even appearing on MTV, and her second CD did much better than her first. Also, she suddenly dropped off the radar and hasn't been heard from since), and Janet Jackson (because she's always been extremely secretive, like being married for a long time without anyone knowing, and her father seems like the type to be apart of something like this). Since in later posts ENT says that some people have guessed who MV is, we decided that it can't be Celine Dion, since no one has guessed her. We also decided that it probably isn't Janet Jackson, since on her recently released album, her voice sounds pretty much the same has her past ones. That left us thinking that it must be Shania Twain. She was huge, has released at least three albums, and won awards. So why did she suddenly just disappear? Kind of fits the part about deciding that she no longer wanted to be apart of everything that was going on...The only part that bothers me, is that I don't see Shania acting all high and mighty when meeting S, but then again, I've been wrong about a lot of other celebrities...

what about Paula Abdul (if we are saying it's a possibility the years were fudged to protect the identity)?

Granted, I wouldn't cry if Paula Abdul was a "fake".... BUT, she had 6 #1 hits and is a judge on a singing contest so if she was a fake it would have a significant amount of repercussions in the industry.

Also, interesting to note, that she refuses to sing anytime someone puts a mic near her on American Idol....

what if it were paula abdul? well, yvette marine was the name of the woman who claimed she'd sung lead vocals on some of paula abdul's songs. she sued abdul in court. does it fit the BI? maybe, maybe not.

    see http://www.paula-abdul.net/html/article_33.html

kinda makes sense that abdul would need pre-recorded vocals if she toured. her strength is/was as a dancer--no way she could sing and dance at the same time.

article about the lawsuit Yvette Marine vs. Paula Abdul in 1991.

If ent fudged the dates/timing of parts of the story, it fits... if this is the hard blind item Ent is referring to that was recently solved. It would implicate Abdul, V. Jeffrey Smith, Peter Lord, and Virgin Records. Most articles about Abdul refer to her as a mediocre singer whose reputation was damaged by this lawsuit, but enough time has passed and the general public seems to have forgotten. Interesting, though, that Yvette Marie lost the case in court.

Christina Ag's "co-writer" & producer is Guy Roche. And the original blog makes a point of calling the offending man Guy instead of the guy

Would shake the industry to the core if it was her.....

and MV was on her own for future recordings and tours..

this indicates that there might be a difference in her voice. think about it, S's voice is known to millions of MV's fans, it is thought of as MV's voice. then when S gets her big pay off, Mv is left to do her own recordings. surely, if shes that bad to have to hire someone else in the first place, it would be majorly noticable. just a thought.

I can't believe I'm going to say this because I absolutely love her - but I think that MV might be Madonna. Her husband's name is Guy and so is her business partner's (Guy Oseary - who was too young to be "the guy" but still). Also - she sounds TOTALLY different from Borderline and Dress you up to Ray of Light and Secret to now. I have seen her multiple timeson each tour - I have seen her 13 times in concert - and I have always seen her lipsynching. Only as of the last concert dd she seem like she was actually singing. I even remember her singing on her Girlie Show tour - the one that was first on HBO - and she seemed like she was singing live, and then she flubbed one of the lines and I knew she was lipsynching. I think Madonna is one of those rare few who would truly rock the industry if this came out to be her.

Just a side note - as far as Janet Jackson goes - I remember seeing her a little girl when she was on Different Strokes and thinking wow, she is such a talented girl. She sang on oneor two episodes. I am positive that MV cannot be her. She was very talented even back then.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I really think this could be Madonna, or possibly Mimi. Now, I'm not so convinced of Mimi... but it's a guess.

Also, I think if people are still guessing on this BI that we should think more about timeless icons of music, not just recent stars like Christina, Britney, ect.

  188. I saw Alicia Keys sing live on an AOL session, and she was definitely singing on her own. She was talking, improvising, the whole thing. And her voice isn't so great, that it would be another person using her as a front.

  189. Does anyone know who actually sang for Milli and Vanilli? Why didn't they just make their own record?

The actual singers for Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan (who could actually sing, so that was a wasted talent because Farian decided if Pilatus couldn't sing, Morvan wasn't better) were:

Charles Shaw (among other things, he was paid $6,000 to do the "rap" on "Girl You Know It's True" -- he was the first singer to talk and was paid $1,500,000 to shut up a year before the actual scandal broke out when the producer admitted it)
    Brad Howell
    John Davis
Jodie and Linda Rocco (did all the female vocals)
    Ray Horton (more backup)
    Gina Mohammed (see above)

For a brief time, Farian did promote them as "The Real Milli Vanilli" and they put out two albums (the appropriately-named "The Moment of Truth" under that name, and then "Sexy Eyes" as 'Try 'n' B' in the early Nineties when the Milli name lost credibility).

  192. This could also be the Mariah Carey/Melonie Daniels issue. For years Melonie had been promised her own recording career because she had a stronger voice, but was relagated to singing "background" because industry types considered her to be hideous. It was rumored that she sang many of Mariah's high notes and pre-recorded a lot of Mariah's live vocals. I'm not sure how true it is, but just like this post, it's been around for ages.

In terms of singers sounding different from their recordings, 99% of singers sound different due to accoustics among other interferences.

As much as I'm not a fan of Beyonce, your theory is way off for two reasons:

    1) Beyonce came from a group and this post discusses an artist who's always been a soloist.

    2) "Crazy in Love" was released in 2003, not 2000 or 2001 as discussed the orginal post.

Not to mention, her second and thrid albums did not do as well as her first and the post says that the singer's albums have sold progressively better.

Plus Matthew is way too controlling when it comes to her career and this person "S" would have been found in a cement ditch if they had tried anything.

    ReplyDelete
  194. Anonymous4:22 PM

Nowhere in that article does it state that the person was always a soloist. The fact that some industry hit person comes on to steer people in another direction tells me that it is Beyonce because anyone who has been on a black message board in the past 5 years knows that's how Beyonce's clean up people do. She has an abortion, clean it up; she steals someone's song, clean it up; she steals someone's moves, clean it up; she steals someone's VOICE, clean it up. And BTW, Melonie sounds NOTHING like Mariah.

  198. To begin with, there's a LOT of "tricks" used in recording. I have worked in some of the biggest studios in NYC & seen some things. A good "snare hit" will be "copied & pasted" over & over for the rest of a song nowadays. Listen to the drums on a Beatles recording & hearing the different dynamic with each hit compared to drums today which are perfect and sound the same every time. Now imagine what can be done with vocals.

Lawyers don't "write" their own stuff at work. They have assistants AND during a busy time hire temps to be "processors" who type at insane speeds to type up their work. It's good pay $30/hour but only temp work for about 2 weeks.

Finally, I don't doubt that ALL the people that have been brought up as guesses didn't have some "help" on an album etc, but Im confident that this person is Alicia Keys. While I know she did unplugged & other events, it's not saying the famous singer can't sing at all, it's saying they don't sing on their records. Live, Alicia sounds at best "ok", but on record she's belting the heck out of her songs.

I would like to add that Ashanti as terrible as she is, actually sang the back up track for j-lO 'S HIT "I'm Real" & has admitted so many times in interviews. She was bitter about it because it's pretty obvious that's her voice, but she was a nobody.

I have met Ashanti and her terrible family several times and they are the worse people imaginable. A family from Long Island that got lucky and think their shit doesn't stink. The fat younger sister has the worst attitude as if she's actually done anything in her life!!!

Anyway, I believe it's Alicia Keys as her voice was super deep when she first came out, but her vocals were way different. Plus , Alicia was in a relationship with a female during her time in NYC, my friend lived down the block from Alicia in the Lower East Side & I remember Alicia well. Does everyone forget how BUTCH Alicia looked when she first came out on the scene?

    Anyway, it's Alicia Keys. peace
