Today's Blind Items- Drama On The Set

It was supposed to be the movie that cemented them as a couple and move them forward from the roles they had been playing. Instead, it was the end for all practical purposes of their careers. When the movie wrapped they both went their separate ways. When it first started, everything was great. The A list couple were excited to be filming together in the kind of movie they thought would bring them awards and acclaim and vault them into a level of acting they hadn't been able to reach with previous roles.

Both members of our couple were A list at the time. Our actress was forever talking about her craft and how she thought she was better than the roles in which she was being cast. This was before the internet and the tabloids didn't really focus on the couple. If they had, they would have seen both of them using drugs on a daily basis. Our actress met a co-star on the set and there were sparks. Here was a man. Someone who was worldly. He was not the star he or force he is today in movies but his intensity was there and she ended up in his bed within days after they first had a scene together on set. Our actor in the couple didn't handle this well and the drug use increased to the point where his performance started to suffer. It took hours to film scenes that should have taken thirty minutes. To get back at our actress he started sleeping with an actress on the set. She was older than our actor but it didn't matter to him. He was trying to make his partner jealous. It didn't work. Meanwhile, the co-star he was having a fling with was falling in love with him and thought they had a future together. She was a mess for a year after filming ended and she found herself dumped.

It is amazing to see how one film and what happened on the set derailed the careers of actors who thought they were moving forward and instead never achieved anything close to what they had before filming started.

  1. I'm saying Ed Burns for the actor and maybe Brittany Murphy for the actress?

  5. The blind states before the internet, so probably at least back in the 80's.

I know easier said than done but ignore it, you know that you are dealing with unfunny twunts when the Kardashian trolls start looking like cutting edge humour

  8. It either states before the internet, or before the internet and tabloids focused on them as a couple. Its hard to tell

  10. "This was before the internet and the tabloids didn't really focus on the couple." no where in that sentence does it just say "before tabloids" it says they didn't focus on the couple.

Hi! I'm with you - clearly hyperbole, since tabloids existed in the 19th century (and possibly prior), and the Internet has existed since the 70s if not 60s in secret. The www is more recent, but that's not what the text said.

Personally I think that the blind is probably about the early 2000s. But the whole thing is fairly non-specific.

  12. Ok who were couples from around 1985-96 that did movies together and didn't work out in the end?

    ReplyDelete

  13. 1) Basically the end of their careers
    2) Both A list at that point
    3) Happened before the internet
    4) Tabloids did not focus on the couple
    5) New man- worldly and more popular today
    6) New woman- older and a mess for a year after the movie

  14. Bassinger and Baldwin

  15. So far everyone mentioned went on to have a better career with the exception of MR. I have a funny feeling if/when this gets resolved it is going to be some ridiculous easy answer.

  16. Russell Crowe, Meg Ryan, Proof of Life

  17. Burt Reynolds, Loni Anderson & Parker Stevenson. Stroker Ace (1983)

  18. Late 80's early 90's acting golden couples, Bruce Willis/Demi Moore; William Hurt/Marlee Matlin. The pre-internet timeline and the post film career description doesn't fit but everything else fits with Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut". That was going to be the game changer for Tom Cruise, but the film landed with a thud. Kidman didn't need it for critical respect, she already had that from other roles where she carried the movie. Cruise on the other hand is still seen as Mr Popcorn Movie.

    In other words I'm stumped.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Meg Ryan was a superstar by the time she filmed with Crowe. So not her.

I'm trying to think of who was an Alist couple pre mid 90s?

    ReplyDelete
  20. The key is the worldly and intense co-star who is a star today, but was not at that time. Probably a drama that had everyone thinking they would get Oscars. "Intense" does sound like Russell Crowe, but not sure which of his movies would fit. What about "American Beauty" with Kevin Spacey as the intense actor?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was thinking Cruise/Kidman in 'Far & Away' but that's probably wrong

    ReplyDelete
  22. Speculation- they did TV or comedies and this was their first drama together

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, Gattica?

    ReplyDelete
  24. It could be Marlee as the actress.

  25. Pitt / Paltrow " S7ven"

  26. @Lotta, I love Minnie Driver, but damn, her love life!! Her fiance left her for Cameron Diaz, and then Matt Damonbroke up with her on Oprah, then she got engaged to Josh Brolin but called it off because Babs Streisand was interfering.

  27. Jersey Girl? But, does J-lo do drugs? I can't see her sleeping with George Carlin (or whoever plays the dad).

I'm stumped...(but, this is nothing new)

  30. I think this has to do with the Blind from last week "This Should be a Movie". He mentioned that he would do a Blind this week about the movie that featured the actress.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like the Rush guess but is Sam Elliott really a 'force' in movies today?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Most of these people are still successful. I sadly have no guess though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. This does relate to the blind about the star hooking up with the infamous man. So is there anything any of those guesses were involved in that fits? I think Lange and Fonda were two popular ones...

    ReplyDelete
  34. @ROFR I dunno, but the time frame fits.

    ReplyDelete
  35. K so a couple points:

    1. Some new projects were being promoted by an Actress A in the last couple weeks
    2. On Actress A'S promo circuit, one of her old movies came up
    3. This movie had two actors in it that were an A list couple in real life
    4. The movie also features Actress B that Enty thought of as an It Girl

...this has got to be Brat Pack related...

  36. Popular guesses for last week's related blind:

    Jane Fonda
    Jessica Lange
    Patti D'Arbanville

    Patti D'arbanville is in it!

  39. Viggo Mortensen is the "force" actor.

  40. Rob Lowe/Melissa Gilbert...the co-star being John Cusack.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Speaking of power couples, Mr Porn Iguana himself is in this as well!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Alright now who did Patti sleep with? Manson?

    ReplyDelete
  43. But Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy never dated...otherwise it would have been a good guess.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @crila16, I can't find anything proving or disproving them as a couple, but I did find this: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Molly_ringwald_had_a_crush_on_andrew_mccarthy

Perhaps this film was going to cement them as a public and on-screen couple? Everything else fits including last week's blind.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm onboard with Tara I think. And the Blind does say "This was before the internet and the tabloids didn't really focus on the couple"...so maybe they weren't so open about it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Tara and @VeraL make sense to me. I could see the 'coming out as a couple' in the publicity for the film as the masterstroke to cementing the popularity of them both.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ben Stiller for the 'force' actor

    ReplyDelete
  48. I wanted to say Wisdom with Emilio and Demi, but can't make it work.

So far Fresh Horses fits best (ish). Except for the Molly/Andrew/Not a Couple Issue.

    ReplyDelete
  49. i also think Kidman, Cruise, movie, Eyes Wide Shut. Explains alot actually.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @auntliddy--if it's Eyes Wide Shut, I can't see Kidman and Cruise doing the drug route. Nor were their careers ended by that film.

Plus who's the "real man" who swept our leading lady off her feet? I beg of you not to say Thomas Gibson.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Molly Ringwald doesn't fit, she was huge and I can't see one movie ruining her career. Altho she definitely was the it girl of the Brat Pack.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I came here for the answers...But I just cannot see Molly Ringwald being considered a "serious" actor but more comedy.

    Blinds are hard y'all!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Molly did try some serious films, mostly TV films, and her ABC Family show was a teen drama. Her career did derail after that movie - she didn't make it out of the 80's with an intact career. Neither did he. I think he did some work on Growing Pains but mostly directs now.

    ReplyDelete
  54. This bi is hard... I dont think any of the guesses fit...what about rob lowe and some of the coulda been stars from st elmos fire?

    ReplyDelete
  55. How about Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson in the Born Yesterday remake which badly bombed in 1993? It was the last movie they made together. She got a Razzie nomination for it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. @EastCoaster--Melanie and Don would certainly be believable for the drugs part, but I have trouble picturing her banging on about her "craft"...

  57. Stroker ace was born to race,
he had a mean streak 2 feet wide.
A son of a gun with a flair for fun,
and more than his share of pride.
Take a dirt road curve with the devil's nerve,
make a car dance across the mud.
Haulin shine was his regular line till the track got in his blood.

He's a real hot shot and bragged a lot,
but man that fool could drive.
He loved the feel of a steerin wheel,
and the girls w/ the bedroom eyes.
In a racin tight or a barroom fight,
    Stroker stole the show
A back stretch blazer and a real hell raiser and a racetrack Romeo.

Momma lock yer daughters up that wild bunch is back in town.
And them lil girls get frisky when they hear that race car sound.
Their bringin out the yellow flag, somebody's brakes have failed.
There's an oil slick on the inside and a wrinkle on the rail.
You better stand on it Stroker cause cause a bandit's on your tail.

  70. ^Keep listing working actors that are well known and have careers /stop

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm with Eastcoaster - Melanie Griffith, Don Johnson, Antonio Banderas and I have no idea whom else.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The blind doesn't say that the actress went on to marry her co-star, so I think we can take Antonio Banderas out of the mix if this is Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

I heard that Don Johnson had a drinking problem but - drugs?

And, was he A list at that time? I don't think so.

Anyway their last co-starring role was Born Yesterday in 1993.

They separated in 1995 and divorced in 1996.

I also don't see any likely co-stars for them to have affairs with in Born Yesterday.

um uma thurman & gary oldman guess!!! hell to the yeah!

  75. The blinds here may be mostly bogus, but there are some sharp and crafty guessers here on CDAN. This is indeed Fresh Horses, with Viggo and D'Arbanville as the second partners. It states "this was before the internet and the tabloids didn't really focus on the couple" which is why the public wasn't really aware Ringwald & McCarthy were an item.

    Nice work!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Buying Tara's guess of McCarthy, lost careers, Ringwald as it girl, and older actress, D'Arbanville, and Viggo as force actor.

It all fits for me. A++++, T!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I agree with Fresh Horses but I think the other players were Ben Stiller and Molly Hagan. Remember Enty said that he was surprised to find that D'arbanville was in that movie and he would not have been if she was the answer to this blind.
