In the first day of testimony in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial, his neighbor, Michelle Burger, testified that she heard blood curdling screams followed by gunshots coming from Pistorius' house.
“Just after 3, I woke up from a woman's terrible screams. Then I also heard a man screaming for help. Three times he yelled for help.”
The woman was cross-examined much of the afternoon by Pistorius' attorney and because of some translation difficulties she sounded much less sure than she probably would have otherwise. The court translator sucked and it made the woman seem like she wasn't sure about her testimony.
Burger said that only fear your life could be in danger would produce screams like the ones she heard that night. Pistorius is accused of killing his girlfriend. He admits killing her but says he thought she was a burglar hiding behind his bathroom door when he shot through the door and killed her.
When Burger was asked by the lawyer for Pistorius whether she could have confused the gun shots with a cricket bat she said, “Most South Africans know the sounds of gun shots. We hear the every day.”
The woman was a rock. She is back on the stand tomorrow morning.
